Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

The Phils' Favorite Opponents

So I was scrolling through a few of the Phillies' lifetime batter-vs-pitcher stats, and some of them are so nuts that it's almost comical. All batter-vs-pitcher stats have to be taken with a grain of salt, of course, since they're all based on small sample sizes pretty much by definition.  But still, it's fun.

So anyway, here are some of the pitchers that the current Phillies' hitters own (and vice versa).

Star-divide

(I wish there was a way to jazz this up a little instead of just having a wall of text and numbers to stare at, but hey.)

(No time for the pitchers actually. Maybe I'll do that some other time. Or maybe I'll do one on the pitchers the Phillies' hitters are most owned by.)

Holy crap @ Ben Francisco’s numbers against Sonnanstine.

Also, I love the fact that a lot of the guys our hitters crush are currently in the rotations of division rivals (naturally, I guess).

He prolly sees Ben in his nightmares…

Although i believe Sonnanstine still no longer in the rotation. He’s in the pen .

Yikes. Some crazy numbers there. On a related note, it was kinda crazy that pretty much everyone Contreras faced today had some awesome numbers against him.

Haha, Francisco has a .555 HR avg vs Sonnanstine.

I think my favorite part of this exercise is that Utley’s craziest numbers aren’t even particularly crazy, relative to his career numbers.

very utlerian

i wonder how many pitchers chase has an ops over .850 against

by Steve J on May 20, 2010 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

to answer my own question – with at least 10 PAs, chase has a .900+ OPS against 60 pitchers

by Steve J on May 20, 2010 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

If I ever divest of my bobbleheads, I’ll send my Ryan Howard to Mr. Braden Looper. COD of course.

Don’t you mean utterly utlerian?

by Phils Rock on May 21, 2010 8:53 AM EDT reply actions

That explains why Lannan broke Utley’s finger.

by David S. Cohen on May 21, 2010 9:49 AM EDT reply actions

I may be wrong about this, but as I was at the game when that happened, Utley may have better numbers post break. I think it’s a thing with him, and if it were me, I’d feel the same way. Idiot potentially cost him an MVP award.

by Wet Luzinski on May 21, 2010 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I believe that game was actually Lannan’s major league debut.

by taco pal on May 21, 2010 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

It was, because every. single. time the Phillies face Lannan, the Nats broadcasters bring up how Lannan should never have been ejected in that game. He hit Utley, broke his hand, and then nailed Howard with his next pitch.

Here’s the actual clip. While it brings back bad memories, it’s somewhat entertaining to hear the back-and-forth between Wheels and Spaceman Sarge about whether Lannan should have been ejected.

by taco pal on May 21, 2010 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

He probably shouldn’t have been as I don’t believe the pitches were intentional. Even so, if he had no control of himself, he could have hurt someone even more.

My feelings exactly. You eject him to protect the batters. It doesn’t matter if it’s intentional or not.

by phatj on May 21, 2010 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

5 of Ben Francisco’s 33 career home runs were hit off Andy Sonnanstine. That’s ridiculous.
