Ryan Madson out at least eight weeks after toe surgery
Todd Zolecki tells us that Phillies erstwhile closer/set-up guy Ryan Madson will miss the next eight weeks after undergoing surgery on Monday to repair a broken right big toe, sustained after Madson kicked a chair after blowing a Save on Thursday in San Francisco.
This is obviously very bad news, as Madson is the Phillies' best (only decent?) relief pitcher.
The Phillies' bullpen, as currently constructed:
Brad Lidge, Jose Contreras, Danys Baez, J.C. Romero, Antonio Bastardo, David Herndon, Chad Durbin, Nelson Figueroa
I don't feel so good.

Ryan Madson disappoints me.

I know I should be more worried than I am, but I’m feeling pretty mellow about this. I guess I’ve just seen so many worse bullpens over the years that this isn’t fazing me so much.
well I feel bad enough for both of us. Our bullpen was a concern; now it’s a liability. It wouldn’t surprise me if Mr. Toe costs the team a return trip to the post season.
not to sound pessimistic or anything …
I’m with taco pal, personally – this doesn’t really bother me. If they don’t make the post season, it will be for a lot of bigger reasons than just Madsen. This is nothing they can’t deal with for two months, provided someone, ANYONE, else steps up in that bullpen.
The Phillies are in first place despite their shortcomings and have a reputation for getting better as the season goes along. The offense goes into funks and then comes out looking awesome. The pitching staff doesn’t settle in until mid-May or so. Everyone’s convinced the bullpen will be a disaster, whether they’re right (2007, 2009) or wrong (2008). This happens seemingly every year, and yet every year there are people surprised that this is going on.
Sorry, I get where you’re coming from, but I can’t be too pessimistic right now.
Past performance, future results, etc., etc. I realize our bullpens have been much, much worse in the past, but I fail to see how this is a good thing for the Phils. I just think this is an additional straw on the camel’s back that wasn’t necessary. We still have no idea when Rollins or Happ will return. Meh.

Yeah, really. Problem is, Baez would be the logical choice to be replaced by Matheison, but they have a financial commitment to Baez and Mr. Smug would never admit that it was idiotic to sign Baez in the first place—especially this early in the season.
Baez could also right the ship. He was pretty good last year. I know reliever stats are volatile and all that, but if his 2009 stats are liable not to repeat themselves, then the same is true for his early-season struggles this year.
Pretty good might be a little too generous. Let’s just say he was competent last year. (4.03 ERA, 4.56 FIP, 4.22 xFIP)
