Bastardo to DL, Mathieson to Majors
The moment we've all been waiting for. Scott Mathieson is back with the major league club, 1415 days after his last major league appearance. Congrats on making it back Scott. Now make us proud!

Quoting Romero from another thread…
I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining about Mathieson (I’m not), but I wonder if Zagurski is the better call-up here.
I tend to agree. I think you’d want a lefty to replace Bastardo, as while he hasn’t quite been a LOOGY, he’s definitely faced a lefty-heavy crop of hitters.
Now, if you want to invent an injury for Herndon and call up Mathieson to replace him, I’d be all for that.
agreed on principle, but in the grips of too much Mathieson enthusiasm right now.

If only we had a terrible bullpen pitcher who could be removed to make way for Zagurski… Oh, there is one but it won’t happen because he’s on a 2 year contract? Oh, I see.
While Baez’s contract was ill-advised and while he has been very bad this year, I think we might be getting a bit vulnerable to overstatement about it these days. 27 innings is a small sample. He’s only ever been this bad in one other year of his career, when, if I recall, he was playing hurt. His career FIP is about 1.3 lower than what he’s done this year, his xFIP about 0.7 lower. He isn’t a good pitcher, but he’s significantly better than what he’s shown.
Fair Enough
I’ll scale back my anti-Baez/Castro rhetoric for now… At least until I see one of them in a game, that is.
Thanks for bringing my thought into this thread, phatj.
And I can’t remember if Mathieson and/or Zagurski are on the 40-man, but I’m feelin’ like they both are. Can I get some back-up on this brain fart?
You’re correct, they’re both on the 40-man.
I think you’re probably right about Zagurski vs. Mathieson if we’re speaking ideally… but the truth of the matter is that we’ve been rolling without a reliable lefty the entire year. Charlie keeps trotting Romero out there to face lefties in the late frames, but with Bastardo trying (and failing) in the 6th/7th/8th LOOGY role, Antonio had been relegated to nothing but a long man anyway. My ultimate point being: considering Charlie’s usage patterns, I think adding Mathieson at this juncture is likely to help a bit more than adding Zagurski.
eeeeewwww – you’ve seen his naiveté?

Haven’t talked to Ruben today…

Maybe he meant us, as in TGP. We did have “Pat the Bat” around here for a few installments, after all.
that’s racist?

I openly admit to being prejudice against those who are too stupid to realize they are ignorant

Not to be a buzzkill, but the downside to this...
…is that Bastardo seems unable to stay healthy. A lengthy DL stint last year for shoulder problems, time on the DL (in the minors) the year before with shoulder problems, and now he’s got issues with the elbow. I don’t notice anything particularly violent in his delivery, but something’s clearly amiss in his left arm.
The shame of it all is that Bastardo has the ability — assuming he learns to throw strikes — to be a really nice back-of-the-bullpen lefty. He’s got real swing-and-miss stuff, and lefties have always had a hard time off him throughout his minor league career. But he’s obviously got to stay healthy if he’s ever going to make it as a major leaguer.
It’s an inflamed nerve that’s a fairly common injury from any sort of repetitive throwing motion – essentially, it’s the elbow equivalent of carpal tunnel syndrome. Immobilizing it at night and taking an anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen or naproxen, for example) should cure it if it’s minor. If it’s major, there’s an out-patient surgery to decompress the nerve and shave the elbow to enlarge the cubital tunnel. For someone who wasn’t an athlete, the first stage (immobilizating & anti-inflammatory) would be done for 4-6 weeks before determining if surgery is needed. It will probably go quicker for Bastardo. If the surgery is needed, recovery is generally around 8-12 weeks. That would put the total time out at 12-18 weeks for a non-athlete.
And honestly, the shoulder problem could have caused this. A fair number of ulnar neuritis cases come when a shoulder injury makes someone change arm motions, trapping the nerve behind the knob of the elbow.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
