Some Phillies Links for You, June 2, 2010: Futility Express, Young Brown, Another Roy?
Astros' Oswalt targets three teams
Fanhouse reports that Oswalt is liking the looks of the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, and St. Louis Cardinals and would only approve a trade to one of these three teams.
So it's the Yankees, then.

Fisher Cats outslug R-Phils, 12-10
Four hits for Domonic Brown, including his 10th home run. More success for the best hitter in the entire organization right now.

Please be well, Placido.
Paul Hagen: Phillies hitting coach Thompson: 'I'm very frustrated'
What's baffling is that the team went from so good to so bad.
Phillies Notes: Phils' Rollins, Polanco still resting
Meanwhile, shortstop Jimmy Rollins' rehabilitation in Clearwater, Fla., for his strained right calf is moving slowly. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Rollins likely would not be ready to come off the disabled list when eligible Sunday.

Agree. Fly in ointment: HR/9 at 0.7 is about half his career average and less than a third of what it was last year (2.3). Tune in on September 1 – after their August schedule.

I wonder if the knuckleball thing is really part of the explanation for the slump. I know there’s no way to prove it though. And I know lots of other teams have faced knuckleballers over the years without any ill effects.
On the other hand, I also don’t think it’s disproven by the fact that Daisuke shut us down the day before we faced Wakefield. When he’s on, Daisuke is a really good pitcher.
I think it was a perfect shitstorm of factors that contributed to this teamwide slump—coinciding funks, pressing, facing consecutive knuckleballers/slop-throwers, errors, BP blow-ups, various injuries. 15 diff lineup changes to shake things up probably don’t allow them to gain too much confidence too quickly, either.
Some are now speculating that Utley looks hurt again—could be reaching, but you never know with him because he never says anything.

I don’t know— but that is something that even I am wondering— he did not look right up there the last few times I have watched him hit… I don’t know whether whatever illness he had is still hanging around, there is some injury, or if it is just frustration/ lack of confidence. I really hope that he isn’t… that is the last thing this team needs at this point.
I just heard that on Baseball Today this afternoon— there are allegations that Utley is reverting to some of the bad habits he had when he was dealing with the hip injury. From what they said, the Phillies say that he is fine, but he is definitely not right. That being said, they felt that Howard looked much worse.
I have had a Dom Brown boner for the past 3 months. Lightheadedness set in 2 months ago, I haven’t been able to feel my extremities for the past month and a half. My fingertips turned black and fell off, finally.
I hope there’s no connection between your fingertips falling off and your “boner” :)

Is this a joke?
Reports that Werth will bat in the lead-off position today !?!
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/Werth_bats_leadoff.html#axzz0piBm80Cc
The purported lineup:
1. Jayson Werth
2. Wilson Valdez
3. Chase Utley
4. Ryan Howard
5. Ben Francisco
6. Raul Ibanez
7. Greg Dobbs
8. Brian Schneider
9. Kyle Kendrick
I’d say a sweep looks imminent, but stranger things have happened.

It’s getting to the point where it just might make more sense to draw the lineup from a hat. If they’re not doing that already.

Now your starting lineup for the Philladelphia Phillies… Please welcome the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.
Two. No how about an over under for IP’s by Kendrick?

Although I will say it’s a welcomed change to have every big name looking for a move to reportedly have Philadelphia on their short list of requests, we clearly don’t have anymore expendable minor league talent to fork over anymore, and pitching is clearly not our main concern right now…

Roy Oswalt just screwed Houston.
He listed 3 teams to go to, which puts Ed Wade behind an 8 ball in terms of leverage. Worse still the Cardinals system is not great, the Phillies traded away a lot of prospects the last 2 years (though the system is still in pretty good shape, I have to think RAJ is wont to engage in any more mega deals right now) and the Yankees system is better than it used to be, but outside of Montero, there is no one Wade could hang his hat on with fans as being a good return for a talent like Oswalt.
I fear this trade may make Ed Wade’s Schilling trade look like a stroke of genius. I honestly wouldn’t rule the Phillies out of it. Given Oswalt’s huge contract, the prospect cost should end up lower, as I doubt McLane wants to eat a significant portion of the remaining money.
well, make that 4 teams now, as he allegedly would also approve a deal to the Nats.

Really?
Shit. That’s the one I’ve thought all along would go after him—SS is set to make his debut this week or next with the big club. I can see this happening.

I don’t see Rizzo doing it. The Nats aren’t likely to win a World Series in the next 2 years and their system is good, but not stocked with talent. That team is on the precipice of putting things together, but trading for Oswalt could hamstring them for years.
He definitely shouldn’t. I don’t know much about Rizzo. Is he smart?
Jim Bowden would make the trade.
I don’t know a ton, but he seems to be pretty good, and slow playing things with Strasburg, when the kid easily could have made the opening day roster leads me to believe he isn’t likely to cave quickly to win now pressure.
think he would do Oswalt for the presumed No. 1 pick in the draft — Harper?

interesting. didn’t know that. wonder what the rationale for that rule is?
by Boundforbeach on Jun 2, 2010 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Amusingly, it’s actually called the “Pete Incaviglia Rule.”
Basically, Incaviglia (who was one of the all-time great power hitters in college baseball history) was picked by Montreal but refused to sign with them because he didn’t want to spend any time in the minors, and the Expos wouldn’t promise to bring him straight to the big leagues. So they reached an agreement where they would sign him and then immediately trade him to the Rangers. MLB then enacted the rule to prevent players from being able to hold their drafting teams hostage after they’re picked.
that is interesting. If the NHL had that rule, the Flyers might have actually hoisted a few cups with Forsberg instead of the ongoing Lindros drama…
by Boundforbeach on Jun 2, 2010 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions
If I am the Nationals, I don’t do that deal— they are a team that is building for the future, and thus should be much more interested in bringing in a talented prospect than a pitcher they would have for a year and a half (particularly a year and a half where Strasburg is going to be on innings control)… and as taco pal says, they can’t… could they trade the rights to the first pick?
The rational thing to do might be to just wait until the offseason to trade him. Usually you can get a higher price in the middle of a pennant race, but circumstances are such that that might not apply here. Oswalt might be open to going to more teams once there’s a clean slate, especially if he knows that if the situation doesn’t work out for him, he’ll only have to stay there for one year instead of 1.5. Also, Wade would be closer to getting draft pick compensation, which would give him a little more leverage not to make a deal.
Of course, McLane could screw that up by ordering Wade to deal Oswalt now regardless of the price he can get for him.
I hope there is absolutely zero chance RAJ would even consider a move for Oswalt. The acquiring team is on the hook for the remainder of this year’s 15 million and next year’s 16 million salary, plus whatever we would have to deal to get him. It would mark a complete reversal from the protect the farm rationale given for trading Cliff Lee and would smack of rank desperation.
by Boundforbeach on Jun 2, 2010 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Absolutely – unless (1) Cormican is right and the market is so depressed that we can get him for much lower-level prospects than we otherwise would, and (2) McLane orders Wade to trade Oswalt now instead of waiting for a more opportune market.
If that happens, we could actually come out ahead, farm-wise, by dealing lower-level prospects now for two draft picks in 2012. The money issue is a legitimate concern, though.
I hope to beat the Philly.com commenters to the punch: Can you imagine if we still had Lee and got Oswalt?
oh that’s funny. you know it’s coming. The Halladay-Lee-Oswalt-Hamels “dream” rotation comments.
