Bill Conlin: It's Biddle the Batboy with Phillies in the Gulf Coast League. Arr! From hell's heart, Bill stabs at metaphors:

The Phillies' GCL starter yesterday was a wiry righthander from Samana, DR, named Lisaberto Bonilla. He is 20 and out of the Academy, the Phillies' Dominican Summer League team. Last season he was 6-2 with a 1.41 ERA. "He has a chance to be a good one," D'Armas said. Samana is the whale-watching mecca of the Atlantic. Most of the whale population of the North Atlantic migrate there in the winter to Samana Bay, where they mate and do whatever large aquatic mammals do in warm waters.

Yesterday, Lisaberto had a whale of a fastball.

Dan Gross: It's Always Sunny at McElhenney's Tavern. Utley and Howard to appear in the show. Imagine the idea of a man-crush on Utley!

I propose December 22, 2012 for Daulton's induction ceremony

(the Long Count ends its cycle on December 21)

Honor is no substitute for victory.

Darren Daulton to be inducted into Phillies Hall of Fame. If anybody had any sense of humor, they’d schedule the ceremony in 2013.

The induction itself isn’t evidence of a sense of humor already?

Dutch has his faults, but he was a very good catcher for the Phillies for a decade. He’s not good enough for the MLB HOF, but in the pantheon of Phillies backstops you only have to be better than Bob Boone and Bo Diaz to become legendary.

Seminick was not too bad, but point well taken.

I personally would rather see Lieberthal up there before Daulton – crazy aside (and poor interpretation of mayan prophecy by all the doomsayers) – the whole stain / taint of the 93 team and the ‘juice’ – there’s got to be better optioins throughout the history of the team before Daulton?

by jemagee on Jun 23, 2010 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I also prefer Lieby and have mixed feelings (at best) about the ‘93 team. Still, Dutch was a pretty good player, it’s not like they’ve nominated Lance Parish or Gregg Jeffries to the Phillies Wall of Fame.

by Cormican on Jun 23, 2010 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know who is on it and who isn’t but in terms of ‘derservingness’ – would you say daulton would have been your next choice for enshrinement?

by jemagee on Jun 23, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Also not knowing who is and isn’t on it, I can’t say. I should look that up before getting further into the discussion.

by Cormican on Jun 23, 2010 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Looking at the full list, I don’t think Dutch is the most egregious member.

Wait

How did Juan Samuel get there before Manny Trillo?

by jemagee on Jun 23, 2010 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Tony Taylor and Larry Bowa seemed more destined to the wall of pretty good to me. These things are always just popularity contests, and Dutch was exceedingly popular. Go look through the list of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees it reads like a who’s that of 1950’s/60’s one hit wonders. I try not to lose sleep over these things.

by Cormican on Jun 23, 2010 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I just put up a fan post who you’d like to see – and I just think if you were on the 80 starting line up and not named pete rose you should be there :)

I ignore the rock and roll hall of fame cause they put it in the wrong palce, quite undeserving (and seriously – put it in a place people like to come for history anyway as opposed to the arm pit of the universe)

I think it’s a nice thing to talk about – a fun distraction – i’m not really taking it that seriously though

SABR rage

If Daulton gets this honor, you could build a good case for Lieberthal too.

by Wet Luzinski on Jun 22, 2010 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope he gets it someday. I think feelings have softened toward him over the years.

Maybe Doug Glanville will get it based in part on post-career achievements?

I don’t know if feelings will ever soften enough toward Abreu, but that would be nice as well.
