NL's time
last year, the AL had nathan, a good papelbon and rivera to shut the NL down in innings 7-9. i think this year the NL has a much better pitching staff (i would take jimenez, johnson, and halladay over AL starter price)
that’s really been the difference the past few years as the game boils down to a battle of the closers. Nathan, Papelbon and Rivera have been the most dominant during that time but not this year – no Nathan and Papelbon not as good as years past. Rivera… well he is really a robot.
forgot wainwright
him too. the NL is just stacked with starters
Although it feels like even the robot has slipped some this year… Is this just perception (one of those “When I do good no one remembers, when I do bad noon forgets” things) or reflective of how his early season has went?

Somehow, it’s just not the same without Utley. And puke, too much Matthew Mcgonahey (or however you spell his stupid name)
I wish he were there… Heck, I wish that he wasn’t there for any reason other than the one that he is gone. Five straight appearances, ad this on would have been a club record… Just sad all around.

Hmmm that’s actually a really interesting question.
Cop out answer, but whichever one stays healthier is going to have the better career. All things being equal, I’ll take Strasburg, but it’s not an easy question.
Some have argued that Strasburg’s mechanics are a major red flag and that arm injuries could hamper him or even end his career prematurely a la Prior.
"F#$% [player]!" --FuquaManuel
I have heard that a couple of places, most notable ESPN’s Baseball Today Podcast back when he was still in the minors— they mentioned something about his delivery being a potential red flag— they said that the flaws in his mechanics were a much bigger red flag than someone like Lincecum who had weird mechanics, but a more normal delivery.
by dannijd on Jul 13, 2010 9:26 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Strasburg’s the better bet, command and “stuff”-wise but either one is a good choice.

So I just got pedroia, uggla, josh johnson and a 3-D Jimenez in my pack of Topps. Had to get take-out. Made a Wawa stop. Couldn’t resist the display at the counter. Had to buy.
I saw them as well…almost got them, but the wawa here in stone harbor had packs of the 2010 Phillies as well so I had to spring for them instead.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

Ha, it’s funny — I’ve had a couple of fairly serious conversations with my soon-to-be in-laws about the rooting interests of any kids I have. Long story short: they’ll be Philly fans, it’ll be okay if they like the Red Sox too, but Eagles and Phillies are non-negotiable.
by PhillyFriar on Jul 13, 2010 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m the old “4 for 4” Philly fan with no exceptions, but baseball and football are highest on the totem pole for me. If I have to offer a sacrificial lamb to save my kids from becoming Patriots fans, it’ll be worth it.
by PhillyFriar on Jul 13, 2010 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Taking the long view historically, the Sixers are the team PF should hold onto the most, because they’re the only one that actually has Boston as a division rival. If that rivalry ever gets back to where it was, watch out! Circa 1981, I’m not even sure if the Cowboys were as hated as the Celtics were.
Especially considering we’re not getting out of this one bedroom apartment anytime soon, these kids won’t be school age for quite some time. Jrue Holiday will be the grizzled vet point guard, just hanging onto the end of his career!

Stanley Cups -2, Appearances – 7
Conference Champions – 8
(1974–75, 1975–76, 1976–77, 1979–80, 1984–85, 1986–87, 1996–97, 2009–10)
They also have the highest winning percentage next to the Habs.
And have only played below .500 hockey like 11 times.
Don’t try to convince people who don’t hold hockey as number one in their hearts to do so; it will never happen. We hockey loving folk are a minority, and considering what’s happening to the NBA (in terms of its commissioner doing everything it can to ruin the game), perhaps that’s a good thing.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luukko
I mean, I like hockey well enough. I can’t say I’m as committed to it, but I still root for the Flyers. My main point is that it will always be possible to root for both the Flyers and the Bruins, but in the long run there will come a time when it isn’t possible to root for the Sixers and the Celtics.
I don’t know; I’ve pretty much abandoned the NBA product. I’m more into following the college players that went to my school and seeing how their careers develop. Well, that and rooting against the Lakers and wherever LeBron is playing.
I hate every team not named the Flyers, but that’s just me and how I wuz raised.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luukko
The Bruins, true they’re not division rivals but after what we did to them this year, things have changed. The games are gonna be nasty!
Tell you one thing: I loved wearing my Flyers jersey around here for a couple of weeks after that.
by PhillyFriar on Jul 13, 2010 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Hey, I love the Flyers — at least as much as I can love a team in a sport I don’t follow with anywhere near the fervor of baseball, football, or even soccer.* And I’m not saying whether I’d sacrifice them before the Sixers, just that I’m probably going to have to be open to compromise on either given my domicile for the foreseeable future.
*This is not at all a knock on hockey; love the sport, covered Hockey East for my college paper for a couple of years. Just saying it’s not top of my pecking order.

I think I mentioned this before, but in a nutshell, the fact that they essentially didn’t exist 10 years ago… and now they act like they’re the most loyal, diehard bunch in the world. It’s completely nauseating.
Throw in the fact that Belichick is possibly the most conceited man in sports today, the unapologetic cheating, and the thuggish defensive tactics that (combined with the Panthers’ mauling of the Eagles’ WRs that same year) led to gigantic rule changes, and… I dunno, I just don’t much like the Patriots. At all.
by PhillyFriar on Jul 14, 2010 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions
Belichick seems like he’s just about the most unpleasant man in the United States. I’d rather have hung out with Steinbrenner.
We’re talking about a guy who stormed off the field before congratulating Tom Coughlin after the Super Bowl a few years back.
Incidentally, the Pats are probably my most hated NFL team behind only the Cowboys. I’m sure part of that is living up here, but they’re awful no matter what. I’ll happily admit: I rooted vehemently for the Giants in that Super Bowl. Can’t picture doing that under any other circumstances, but the Pats going 19-0 that year would have been about the worst thing to happen to me in my sports fandom.
by PhillyFriar on Jul 14, 2010 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions
Me, too! I actually made out a list of pros and cons for rooting for the NYG vs. NE and the list of cons for the Pats just outweighed those of the NYG’s. Plus, Spags was there and it was a defense-oriented team, so it made it a little easier.

by philsandthrills on Jul 13, 2010 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions
I never said Howard deserved to start (while I understood Manuel wanting to take one of his own, I was on the fence about his even deserving to be there, and was really floating to no). I was merely offering a plausible reason for Howard starting.
by dannijd on Jul 14, 2010 12:13 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Well, he can hit and DH’ing would keep him out of the field. It’s going to be his future position anyway; might as well get him used to it.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luukko
How do you figure— Howard is under contract with the Phillies for so long at so much money that he will probably never do an AtBat for an AL team.
by dannijd on Jul 13, 2010 11:05 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Trade or perhaps the NL will finally adopt the DH. I hate it, but it’s here to stay and we may as well benefit from it.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luukko
I said that I hate it, but as long as it’s here to stay, I think both leagues should adopt it. Sue me, but two sets of rules for two separate leagues is just stupid.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luukko
Two sets of rules is fine.
The DH is fucking gay. It was invented by Jeff Francouer’s dad or something.
With his salary, the only way the Phillies could swing a trade once he becomes entirely useless in the field would be to eat a ridiculous amount of salary— I doubt there is a team in the league (Evil Empire included) who is going to pay 25 mil a year for a DH.
As for bringing the DH to the National League— NEVER… I much prefer the DO… Designated Out.
by dannijd on Jul 14, 2010 12:15 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Unless it’s a trade of bad contracts, in which the Philies pick up another big salary (with $ millions of cash also changing hands to even out the deal, one way or the other). Besides, if he stays in shape I don’t think he will become entirely useless before his late 30’s.
Is Charlie seriously not going to use Halladay to give himself an advantage once the games start again? Isn’t that like a conflict of interest or something? Not that I’m complaining.

I wish the organization would – Brunlett and now Castro. I mean Castro was like getting slapped in the face with a dirty diaper.
Can we at least DFA him if/ when Utley returns?

Saw a good argument that it should’ve been Oswalt, balanced by picking McCutchen instead of Meek from Pittsburgh.
by PhillyFriar on Jul 13, 2010 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions
McCutchen’s really good. I think the Pirates brought him up too early though. They should waited until Alvarez was ready and promoted them at the same time. Now watch, they’ll get that Rendon kid in this year’s draft, and by the time he starts putting it together, McCutchen will already be in his arbitration years.
Yeah, but he proved last year he was definitely ready. I know what you mean, though, from a cost-controlled perspective.

Ghost of Christmas future, or ghost of Howard future?
by dannijd on Jul 14, 2010 12:24 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
My question was serious— when Howard’s contract came out, all that I heard over and over again was that one only needed to look at Ortiz to know why that contract was bad. And while I disagreed at least in part (on the basis that Ortiz was known to have used steroids, and I hold on to the (perhaps naïve) belief that Howard is clean), it did make me really question the wisdom of the contract.

He was already set to pitch on Sunday, I believe.
by philsandthrills on Jul 14, 2010 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions
He didn’t throw very many pitches. Plus they already planned for that. He’s scheduled to start on Sunday. He could probably go Saturday if he had too. Maybe even Friday.
I really hope the Halladay pitching Sunday thing was a red herring… I would hate to see so little pitching today = another 5 days before I get to see him pitch (was in the car on the way home from Ocean City and missed the entire game).
by dannijd on Jul 14, 2010 12:33 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
It’s more important that we give him rest when we have the opportunity to, than it is for you to be slightly more entertained in the short term.
I totally understand that… And agree with that statement… I just have this irrational preference for winning… And it seems that happens a little more when he is on the mound… But Moyer, Cupcakes (why are we pitching him instead of Kendrick?) and Hamels it is— anybody know what Jedi mind tricks will be necessary to get home, night game Cole (or alternately whatever version of Cole pitched last Sunday) to show up?
by dannijd on Jul 14, 2010 12:46 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
That isn’t necessarily true nor is it necessarily false. But too much rest can be counter productive. It just depends where the athlete is and what is affected. Pitchers obviously don’t sit on their ass all that time….it’s active rest. But people work with the assumption that fatigue is purely cumulative so they may see Halladay’s work load as too much so far and he, accordingly, should be rested more. It’s not so simple and neat. The two attributes that are the hardest to maintain at competition levels are endurance and speed. Endurance is easy to maintain- 30 minutes on a bike for a baseball player will suffice but speed is a much more problematic because the workout has to be done at competetion intensity – with that comes mircotearing of muscle and adrenal system stress. And the older the athlete the more work outs dedicated to speed are necessary because it is the attribute most affected by age. So it’s balancing act – rest vs. deconditioning. And while I am a big advocate for rest, it’s not because more rest = more production, it’s rest when done properly = more production.
I can never remember when a pitcher’s throw day is, but seeing as Halladay pitched Saturday, I’m pretty sure his scheduled throw day would have been yesterday or today. In other words, can’t see this setting him back at all.
by PhillyFriar on Jul 14, 2010 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions
So apparently Halladay is not pitching until Sunday.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Yup, it’s listed on the website.
Guess Charlie decided that with the 16 pitches Doc threw, he should give him an extra day? Not that it matters all that much when it really comes down to it, as they could always switch Doc and Cole whenever the next off day is if they so desire.

During Commercials of other things I happened to see Brian McCanns hit at which point I predicted he would get the MVP if the NL then won.
It’s silly to give out an MVP award in a game where one hit can win the award.
Admittedly I didn’t see the rest of the game except for the ortiz single in the 9th so maybe McCann made a series of excellent defensive plays as well
