Aside from Byrnes getting canned last night (obviously after this went to press), Silva misses the point: NO ONE claimed that the Phillies sent "top talent" to Cleveland last year for Cliff Lee.

Domonic Brown is not acting like he wants to stay at AAA very long. This concerns me. To some extent, I wish he would get a minor injury, or mono, or something just so his ridiculous numbers don’t encourage the Phillies to do something stupid, like call him up.

Small sample size. But my goodness, his OPS growth is ridiculous:
Rk: .632
A-: .756
A: .798
A+: .922
AA: .920
AAA: 1.181
Honor is no substitute for victory.
If he comes up to MLB, then his OPS is sure to exceed that of even Nelson Figueroa!

Minor league to major league equivalencies for what Dom's done at various levels
Using the Minor League Equivalency Calculator, here’s what Dom’s projected MLB stats are from his various levels:
A (Lakewood): .201/.259/.270
A+ (Clearwater): .244/.312/.394
AA (Reading): .252/.310/.434
AAA (Lehigh): .380/.412/.611
Honor is no substitute for victory.

I’ll probably have more to say about this soon. But real briefly, of course the Phils should consider trading Werth, and of course they shouldn’t do it yet. If they’re eight or ten games out on July 20, though, and can get a talented player or two who can help them win in 2011 and 2012, it would make a lot of sense. That Brown is ready now is a nice bonus, but it’s almost beside the larger point: you do what helps you win now if that’s realistic, and later if it’s not.

Well said. I certainly hope the Phillies are taking this approach, and not the OMG DOM BROWN IS READY AND UTLEY’S HURT WE’RE SCREWED TRADE WERTH approach. There are teams out there who would be willing to take him for the half season without the guarantee of signing him long term, but it doesn’t mean you trade him just to trade him, and certainly not if we’re still in contention.

That is what I think. I also think from a morale standpoint, the team has to be very careful about trading Werth if they are still anywhere close to contending, as the team could very well take that as a message that the white flag has been waved, and lose whatever fight they still have left.
1) so what? They’re paid to perform, they’re all under contract for years, and they’re exemplary professionals. I don’t care if it gives them a sad, and neither should Amaro.
2) The fact that they can plug in Brown softens the blow anyway.

yup
You can second guess all day long how personnel moves will affect the players’ feeeeeelings, but in the end the GM’s job is to put the best players in the clubhouse now and in the future.
http://www.thegoodphight.com
The other problem is it’s hard to find a lot of contending teams with a glaring need that Jayson Werth would address. Padres?
http://www.thegoodphight.com
I hear the Braves have some young prospect. Guy named Heyward. I think he’s down in low-A ball. Maybe we could offer them Werth for this guy.
The Padres could be an interesting choice. They do have a lot of outfielders on the active roster, but none of them are exactly prolific hitters, so they might be looking for some help there.
Depending on how Manny’s hamstring goes, the Dodgers might be in the market. He’s not DL bound now, but those sorts of injuries can flare up as the season progresses, and if he manages to hurt it again prior to the deadline, they might be looking.
Otherwise, I can’t think of obvious teams that could be interested. Any teams with aging veterans who may be interested in signing Werth long term? Maybe the Angels?

A strange thought after reading the Utley Article
If you took the Disabled Lists from Boston and Philadelphia (cumulative year to date) you could form a pretty darn good baseball team.
Proof that Yahoo FanHouse is Slightly Insane
In an article written this morning they still have the Phillies picked to win the NL East— complete insanity between the length of time Utley and Polanco are lost for, the injury killer cicada kicking them every time they start to stir, and the way that they have played the last three games (which I think may just be a sign that they are reeling under the surface from the blows of so many injuries— I have long thought of Chase and J-Roll as Yin and Yang for this team— complete opposites that balance not only each other, but this team— giving it both a swaggering brashness and a quiet intensity that make the team great— They have played 16 games together this season… In those games, the team has went 12-3 (including J-Roll’s partial game v. Boston and Utley’s 8 innings against Cincinnati).
Have you checked a calendar recently?
It’s 2 July! There are, counting today, 84 games remaining!
If this was happening in September, then, yeah, you might have a point. But right now, you’re nuts.
Even looking at their lineup last night, there are a few “holes.” Most teams have studs and then role players at the back of their lineup. So for 2 months the Phils won’t have an all-star lineup every game. So what? They were in a terrible slump and started to come out of it before these injuries. They still need to pitch, play d, and get numbers from their big guys with small guys contributing (not the other way around). And Howard needs Werth’s eyeballs.
Btw, where the f is Happ?

I think they are back to Slump-it-tude.I hope they can get the script appropriately flipped (while big days from Cerberus are fun— there is something about seeing a guy hit his first career homer that is kind of magical), I wish that the intact members of our offense would look like it.
As for Happ, his rehab is not going as well as anyone could have hoped. He has one more rehab start over the weekend in AAA, after which the team has to either try to get an extension to his rehab time, leave him on the DL with no more rehab play, bring him up to the majors, or option him to AAA.
Fuck the wins I would like Utley to have speedy recovery for him and the Phils for my B-Day and my 1 going on 2 year old would like that too. So much for the 4th of July weekend sweep.
I wasn't even a year old but I stayed up to be outside the Vet with my Dad and Mom when the Phillies won the World Series 1980.
I said that on my birthday (6-30) as well— that I would trade the win I had initially asked for, for Utley’s return… did not work.
I hope yours goes better— particularly considering that you are getting neither the sweep nor the four day weekend without Victorino grounding to second.
I know I saw that last night.
