Les Miserables: Phillies at Cardinals Game Thread, July 22, 2010
Philadelphia Phillies at St. Louis Cardinals, Jul 22, 2010 2:15 PM EDT
The Phillies close out this absolute atrocity of a four-game road series against the Cardinals with an afternoon game in St. Louis. And while the Phillies finally have one of their decent starters -- Cole Hamels -- getting the ball, he'll be opposed by now perennial Cy Young Award candidate Adam Wainwright, with his 2.02 ERA. Piece o' cake!
Discuss the game below. Try not to cry, or break things.

Listening on the radio
for the first time in a while and thinking the same thing. Werth striking out with two outs and two men on really reminded me why I had been limiting myself to just checking the score.

Wait, Jayson Werth struck out swinging with two men on base?
You’ve got to be kidding me, right? I mean, that like NEVER happens.
Werth for McLouth and a PTBNL.
But seriously, I’d love for the Braves to get him if he can play LF. But I know it’d take a crazy package since it’s inner division trading.

No, I find Chris Wheeler refreshingly different and quite entertaining
I am frequently surprised by all the Wheeler vitriol I see around here.
How about trading Domonic Brown + some other prospects for Haren?
Might not be too bad. Brown can’t possibly help this season, and you need a pitcher worse than you need anything else.
This would be the obvious course of action if we knew that an asteroid were going to destroy all human life this winter.
I knew you’d like that suggestion.

New trade idea:
Domonic Brown + Jayson Werth to the Cubs for Carlos Zambrano.
Light a fire under Charlie Manuel and this bullpen. Need a fiery guy like Zambrano.
Happ’s career ERA is 3.07. His career xFIP is 4.61. Dump him on some dimwitted GM cough Ed Wade cough before his ERA starts to regress.
The problem is that with him coming off an injury right now, his value is going to be lower than his true value. If we were going to sell him, the time was before the injury.
His true value, though is a fifth starter. The only thing worse than trading him coming off an injury is letting him pitch and exposing his true talent level.
No.
First of all, his sample size is not large enough to conclude that his true value is as a fifth starter. It is possible that he can improve on the luck-neutral stats that he has posted so far in his career, in which he has thus far started only 30 games. Some of his minor league stats suggest that this is possible.
Second, your logic is wrong. Even if we were to agree for the sake of argument that his true value is as a fifth starter, it still doesn’t mean we should trade him if we can’t get a fifth starter’s price for him – more than that, the price of a fifth starter with five cost-controlled years remaining before free agency.
I’m not saying trade him for the sake of trading him. I think his perceived value right now is higher than his actual value, so if we can get a good return for him then by all means pull the trigger.
Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. I think you are underestimating his actual value, and I don’t think either of us have any idea what his perceived value is.
I don’t get why people are so against trading him. He has value, I’ll give you that, but I would trade him in a heartbeat if it meant improving the club.
I think I made it clear that I am not against trading him. What I object to is your logic and your estimate of his value. Don’t resort to straw men.
I wasn’t referring to you, but other commenters (e.g. “I don’t want to give up Happ” in the conversation above this one.). I could be wrong, but I suspect there are teams out there that will only look at his ERA and overvalue him. If that’s not the case, then I agree that he shouldn’t be traded.
Ok.
What I want to stop is people saying stuff like “we should dump Happ” or “we should get what we can for Happ,” without any facts about any specific offers. No, we should just trade him if and only if a good offer presents itself. Just because a player has outperformed his peripherals doesn’t mean that just any trade you put him in will necessary be a good one.
Well before this recent spat of tennis elbow, he suffered the same tennis elbow in 2007 which he played with tthe entire season. The length of his recent rehab considering this history doesn’t bode well. He has also suffered an oblique strain in the minors which he reinjured again last season. He is a chronic DLer in the making.
I’m not one to believe in hexes. But hey, if the next batter homers off him, I’ll take the blame. I somehow doubt, though, that through all the perfect games and no hitters in history, not a single person mentioned at the time what was happening.

Well as of now I suppose. I still wouldn’t discount guys like Lincecum and Carpenter, and Garcia is also way up there. Really the entire Cardinals staff except maybe Hawksworth is very very good.
by Baseball Nerd on Jul 22, 2010 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Don’t leave out Jimenez. He’s had a couple of bad starts lately, but the guy has been a beast.
Win and win some more...
Don’t get me wrong, he’s very, very good as well. But I still think Josh Johnson has been more consistently good throughout the year, and as you mention Ubaldo has had some more human starts recently. While I like Ubaldo a lot, I wouldn’t rate him above either Wainwright or Carpenter, and certainly not with Johnson. His reputation is inflated by his W-L record, which is more indicative of the run support he has gotten. The NL has a lot of great pitchers this year, and it is hard to rank them all because a lot of them are very good.
by Baseball Nerd on Jul 22, 2010 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Not trying to butt in here, but if you’re talking about Cy Young favorites, that’s one thing. If you’re actually talking about “best pitcher on the NL,” then the discussion essentially includes Halladay, Strasburg, Lincecum, Johnson and Wainwright — and ends there.
by PhillyFriar on Jul 22, 2010 3:57 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Whoops, forgot Ubaldo. And I guess Carpenter goes hand-in-hand with Wainwright.
Personally though, it’s still Halladay for me, though I would entertain an argument on Strasburg’s behalf.

Lots of division titles. One ring. My opinion was and is that they were too deep in pitching, and sacrificed offense to have the Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz/Avery/#5-that-would-be-#3-elsewhere rotation.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
This is a complicated story, actually, as I was living in the Atlanta area during this time. In large part it had to do with their overrating their minor league talent, especially the non-pitchers (most notably, Ryan Klesko). This happened again in 2005 (I think it was) when all those rookies were called up. Only McCann remains.

Ouchy...
Thanks for rubbing the salt on the wound Jayson. As if we didn’t already know this.
Cliff walking: If the Phillies do pull off a Roy Oswalt trade, they might find themselves at the news conference answering more questions about this past winter’s Cliff Lee deal than the trade they just made.
But when other teams look back on that deal, they don’t just ask: “Why’d the Phillies trade that guy?” They ask: “Why didn’t they shop him around and get a better package back?”
“If they’d done that [and dangled him to multiple clubs], they’d have gotten a much better return,” one AL executive said. “I still don’t understand why they just dealt with one team [i.e., Seattle]. I know I’ve talked to a number of teams that have said, ‘We would have loved the opportunity to get Cliff Lee, and we would have given them a much better package than Seattle did. But we were never given that opportunity.’”
We’ve surveyed quite a few baseball people since Lee was traded to Texas. And it’s been unanimous that the package the Phillies got back for him didn’t match what either Cleveland or Seattle got.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&page=rumblings100722
I think the package they got from seattle is better than the one they gave cleveland.
by PhilsForever on Jul 22, 2010 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with all of that, no doubt in my mind this team would have gotten a better package for Lee if they had waited but Amaro clearly felt it was better to deal Lee when he did. Either because he wanted to take attention away from the trade by flashing the new guy Roy in front of everyone, or because ownership asked that he trade Lee when he did so that fans didn’t get used to the idea of a trio of Doc, Lee and Hamels. From a PR perspective I totally get it, but from a baseball perspective, what Ruben did, or rather when and how he did it was absolutely wrong. I get trading away Lee, I don’t like it, but I get it. The timing of it is what bothers me.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

They went into to the winter meetings crying poor about their budget like a bunch of amateurs. Halladay trade happens. Everyone no knows Lee has to go. No leverage.
Yes, but leverage would have been easy to re-establish by not trading Lee right away and just sounding off about how obtaining Hallday for the season changes their approach and they hope to keep Lee unless the right package is presented to them.
