Let's say Moyer's out for the year.
Our pitching staff looks like this:
Roy Halladay – needs run support
Cole Hamels – same as above, & is pitching lights out now
Blanton – had a good start last game up until they didn’t take him out
Kendrick – Dr. Kendrick or Mr. Kyle
JA Happ – Pitching better mechanically but not effectively.
Unless 1 of the bottom three turns into a solid starter, we need to do something. I’m all for a trade, but am not willing to give up the farm & worried, if we trade Werth, about the Right handed bat in the middle of the order (Put Chooch hitting 5th)

Don’t all pitchers need run support?
by SportingFanaticism on Jul 23, 2010 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, but the difference between winning and losing for Halladay and Hamels is run support— and they do not even need much of it. Further, there is really not much that either could do to improve their game that is going to bring them more wins— it really only comes down to doing what they are capable of and getting run support.
When you get below Hamels (Blanton, Kendrick, and Happ), there are things that all three need in addition to run support. Blanton needs to pitch in much the way that he pitched Thursday night (and for management to be smart enough to pull him prior to the eighth inning regardless of pitch count or at least have someone ready to put in at the first sign of trouble if they are going to tempt fate). Kendrick needs consistency— he can not expect to get the number of runs in support that are necessary when he has a meltdown. Happ needs to return to form, or again he is going to need an unreasonable amount of run support to survive.
couldn’t have said it better myself

how does Chollie really not understand by now that Cookies needs to come out after 7 regardless, or after 6 if he’s been marginal?
He may remembering last year, when Blanton had a 1.96 ERA in innings 7-9. In both 2007 and 2008 he was about the same in late innings as in the rest of the game.
In other words, he hasn’t had a late-inning problem in recent years, and I’m not sure I would change the way I use him based on the 7.1 late innings he had so far this year before this last game (now 8.1). Now, I’m not saying that Manuel based his decision on all this, but if he had, the data would have supported his decision to leave him in.
ignoring the bulk of his performances this year seems like bad management or wishful thinking. There’ve been a few blowouts where Chollie was able to give Cookies a chance to go deeper, and in those instances he’s still had to pull him out.
Unless you see some mechanical degradation or other visible signs of loss of effectiveness as he reaches the 7th and later, I can’t see letting the results of eight innings of work this season be the deciding factor over the other 80-odd innings this year and much more over the last couple of seasons. It’s not like his pitch counts have been high when he’s been allowed to pitch into the late innings in general.
Seems to me the problem is not having a quick enough hook when he gets into trouble, rather than failing to pull him before he has a chance.
Wow, I hope not. I can’t believe that he thinks the Mariners have any interest in Ibanez this year, and that a team obsessed with outfield defense would get Ibanez. Is he hitting like a DH now? C’mon! I was on the trade Ibanez train a couple months ago, and if they get someone to eat even 1/4 of his contract, I’d do it, but it seems like there’s just no way. His slump has just lasted too long.

Our blogger emeritus...
…does a great job of explaining mathematically why feels like the most logical move at this point is the right one.
That is to say, Werth should certainly be dangled, but should only really be dealt if he’s bringing back pieces that will help in 2011 and beyond. At the optimistic “hedging your bets” end of that spectrum is my pipe dream trade of Werth+ for Haren; at the other end is simply dealing Werth for prospects. But if the club does pursue the latter course, it obviously has to be for prospects superior to the two compensatory picks they’d get for Werth leaving.
Also — and we might need to throw the Matt S bat signal up for this one — I’m curious to see what subtracting a 4.5 win player (i.e. Werth) does to the Phillies’ playoff odds. That thinking has to fit into the equation somehow; I mean, however unlikely the Phils’ playoff chances are right now, some consideration at least needs to be given to the fact that the clock is ticking for the current core, and even the small boost that Werth’s presence provides as far as playoff odds could outweigh the difference between the prospect return on him and the compensation picks he’d garner.
Yikes, I think I just talked in a circle. That make sense to anyone?
by PhillyFriar on Jul 23, 2010 9:04 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Right now with yesterday’s games, our odds are about 15%. Subtract a 4.5-win player and they fall to about 7%; subtract a 4.5 win player but replace with a 2-win player and they got to 10%. That’s why I think you wait to see how this week plays out. Hence, the “hold” status, but certainly don’t go trading for an ace unless you get a ridiculous deal. I love me some Dan Haren, ridiculously underrated pitcher, but unless they can sneak off w/ him and in some way keep Dom Brown, I’m skeptical. Happ + Werth in a 3-way trade, maybe that would do it, but I bet someone would beat it. And it wouldn’t be worth it otherwise.
Thanks for that.
Agreed re: Haren, which is why I keep referring to it as my pipe dream. Still, if Werth could be flipped for the right pieces, I’d even kick in Happ and Cosart to get Haren and Chad Qualls. Sincerely doubt that Amaro is that creative, though.
What absolutely cannot happen, under any circumstances, is Amaro making a move just for the sake of making a move, i.e. mortgaging the future for Oswalt, or dumping Werth for 70 cents on the dollar out of an irrational fear of the arbitration process.

You know what – if I’m Jamie and it turns out that I need Tommy John, I go for it. Why not? What else is he going to do with the extra time? Collect bottles of wine? I know rehab is hard, but it’s less of a time commitment than being a player. He can take a major league minimum salary for one or two years, have the team cover his medical expenses, work with the training staff 9 to 5 every day, be a quasi-assistant pitching coach on homestands, stay home on road trips, and see where it all leads. I mean, he’s come this far, and being a full-time rehabber isn’t going to keep him away from his family too much. Why not find out what happens?
I like your idea… Now all that he needs is a team willing to pay the league minimum to bring him back knowing that there is a chance (possibly a good one, all things considered) that he will never pitch competitively again.
by dannijd on Jul 23, 2010 10:42 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
The major league minimum is $400,000. Teams piss that away in their sleep. It’s more likely that Moyer would reject the idea of taking the minimum than it is that neither the Phillies nor any other team would offer it to him. In any event, Moyer could even take a minor league contract if he was so inclined. It’s not like he needs the money.
True. I somehow thought that league minimum was higher (and possibly years of service based, making it potentially hefty for someone with Moyer’s years).

In other news, my obsession with trading for Haren...
…is reaching unhealthy levels.
Olney is saying that the D’backs are telling teams they’ll move him by the deadline, so it’s now or never to get a Top 15 pitcher on a team-friendly contract. And of the teams interested, nobody really truly has what Arizona is said to be looking for — young MLB-ready pitching (although the Twins with Gibson and Yankees with Phelps come closest to fitting the bill among interested suitors).
So no time like the present, Rube. Happ can go if Arizona’s interested (he sort of fits the bill), and there has to be a way to turn Werth (and an extra piece, if necessary) into the type of arm Arizona’s looking for.
Spitballing here: Werth and Mathieson to Tampa; Wade Davis, Happ and Rizzotti to Arizona. I think all three teams probably pull the trigger on that, yeah?
by PhillyFriar on Jul 23, 2010 1:33 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Don’t know about the other teams, but I sure would. With the proviso that Domonic Brown still can’t get promoted for at least another month.
Agreed. This is more a move for 2011 and 2012 than a win now move, and I’d approach the rest of the season with that mindset. In the event of any Werth trade, Brown should continue to play everyday in Lehigh Valley until September 1 — and then they can promote him.
by PhillyFriar on Jul 23, 2010 1:50 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
RAJ just made an old teammate fall on Smugcalibur to save face, what makes you think he won’t wait to bring Brown up if Werth goes. He sounds a bit more swayed by the public then perhaps the air of aloof integrity his Cap’n Smarmarvelous image suggests.
I should clarify. All of this is premised on the idea that Arizona undervalues Haren to an extent — which I honestly think is true, with all the noises about his substantial remaining contract and wanting to move him before the deadline. In no way, shape or form would I take this deal if I were the Arizona front office.
As for specifics, I think the Phils will need to give up Werth+ to get the type of young arm Arizona wants, and that’s represented by Mathieson here. I’m not entirely averse to surrendering one of Cosart or Colvin either, but anything past that is where I draw the line.
Also, I think the third team almost needs to be Tampa, because no one else in the hunt for an outfielder really has the quality of young arm that Arizona’s likely to want, or if they do, they won’t deal him for Werth (e.g. Bumgarner from San Fran, Kelly from Boston).
by PhillyFriar on Jul 23, 2010 1:47 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I wonder if there’s a way to pry Upton loose from Tampa as part of the deal? He seems to have worn out his welcome, but I wouldn’t want to give up much to get him, just in case he never progresses.
Sounds like the Rays turned down a Werth-for-Upton swap straight up, so I don’t see any way it’d be possible to get Upton as part of a Haren deal.*
*Unless Amaro did something insane like put an ace lefty on the table. And Lord knows he’d never do that…

Stark on what the phillies want for werth.
It depends. What they want are young players with upside who are controllable beyond this year. They’ve asked for prospects — either to replenish the system or to spin in a pitching deal. But they’ve also taken a shot at Wade Davis and B.J. Upton. So a lot depends on what happens on the field the next few days, and whether they think they have a legit shot to get a pitcher.

Also— interesting to note that Dom Brown has indeed played the last few games in LF, which is encouraging because it means that Mayberry has been playing in RF.

Good because it take it to mean that if Werth goes, his replacement will be Mayberry rather than Brown.

Depends upon who you get back for Vic.Vic straight up for Upton (sorry, he’s stuck in my brain) would replace a starting CF with a starting CF. Upton would be a bit of a drop off if his bat doesn’t come around, but with his ceiling, could be a very valuable player (more than Vic) if he fulfills his potential.

The comparison I always make...
…is with Jason Knapp’s GCL debut back in ’08. Both local (and therefore, obviously cold weather) pitchers that the Phils reached for, at least by industry consensus.
Knapp (2008): 31.0 IP — 11.0 K/9 — 3.5 BB/9 — 0.29 HR/9 — 0.82 GO/AO — 2.33 FIP
Biddle (2010): 17.1 IP — 10.9 K/9 — 3.1 BB/9 — 1.04 HR/9 — 0.82 GO/AO — 3.20 FIP
Obviously insanely small sample sizes, but kind of eerie, no?
Eerie yes— but I am not sure if this means that Biddle will be good or bad— I noticed that Knapp spent the later part of last year injured, but could not find anything about him other than previews for this year.

Where do you see tonight’s lineup already?
I’ve been kind of down on Victorino this year — better power, but worse OBP, for an OPS of .762, and lots of maddening first-pitch swinging. But I see that his BABIP is only .259, compared to .313 before this year. The difference is 17 singles, which would have raised his OPS to .846, assuming I did the math right.
One thing that would make sense here is that he has a .083 batting average with 1 RBI against tonights starting pitcher in 12 previous at bats against him.
What sucks is I thought I was going to tonight’s game so I could see halladay, but instead I have tickets for tomorrow and get to see the sacrifical lamb on the mound.
I'm sure this has already been beaten into the ground but....
Paul Hagen is a fucking idiot for writing that. What prospects would the Phillies have to give up for the Mariners to take Ibanez? I’d say we get their worst bullpen arm in the minors and we trade our top 3 prospects besides Dom Brown and Ibanez. Anyone in?
