Rocks Doc-Blocked: Phillies 6, Rockies 0
The Phillies had a Good Pitcher (Roy Halladay) on the mound tonight, so victory was plausible. And on the first night of the Greg Gross Era, Part II, the bats decided to chime in for once.
Raul Ibanez had 3 RBIs, including a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth for the Phillies first two runs, and was followed by a Jayson Werth sacrifice fly and a two run homer by Ross Gload, giving the Fightins and Halladay more than enough run support. The Phils tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an Ibanez single, driving in Jimmy Rollins from second base.
Halladay, again, was masterful, going eight full innings, allowing just five hits and one walk, striking out nine. J.C. Romero pitched a scoreless ninth to shut the door.
Well that was really nice because tomorrow it's Kyle Kendrick vs. Ubaldo Jimenez. Zeets!

This sounds like a angry comment. I thought it was kinda cool and cosmic.

It is pretty awesome. It’s like the water vapor that comes off the wings of jets.

McCann had a hand in the Braves taking the lead and in giving it back.

Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

I read today that Braves are on pace to win 110 games… I just don’t see that as a 110 win team. They’ve got to regress at some point,
Follow Bleeding Green Nation on Twitter & Facebook
That’s got to be wrong. After tonight’s game their winning percentage is .583, which is on pace for 94-95 wins, or just slightly better than the Phillies did the last two years.

Good start
To a huge series. The way I see it, the Giants and Rockies are the two teams we need to be watching right now. The Braves may come back down to Earth, but six games is still alot to make up. The wildcard chase is much more manageable, and even though there is a bunch of teams in the hunt I think most of them are pretenders. The Muts are doing what they always do, and probably should have been doing earlier. The reds don’t scare me at all. They’ve been scoring a shit-ton of runs but I dont see them staying in the race with their inexperience and that pitching. The Dodgers starting staff is an outright atrocity and it’s a miracle they’ve even gotten this far. The Marlins just never seem to put it all together. That leaves the Rocks and Giants. If we can take 3 of 4 here that would be a great start. The Giants pitching is dominant, but hopefully their offense lets them down like it did last year. I’m concentrating on the WC chase, and if/when we get within shouting distance of the Braves i’ll start to really get excited. Its pretty damn sad that I’ve been reduced to crossing my fingers for the WC but thats just how the year has gone. Hopefully the sticks finally snap out of this god awful funk
In a week's time, we could be at or near the top of the wild-card chase with 60 games left.
That’s why all this talk about making trades for next year is premature to put it kindly.

But Matt Swartz said Jimenez is just lucky, which means that Kendrick is just good.

Jimenez has been very vulnerable lately. Let’s hope he continues his funk tomorrow. Kendrick really has no pressure. I expect him to pitch really loose tomorrow, and maybe surprise us.
I’m sure the only that that was going through his head when he got sent down was " I wish I had another start "

I think it was, “Where’s my Jamie Moyer voodoo doll?”
by Wet Luzinski on Jul 24, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions
I actually expect the opposite— this has been a roller coaster week for him— he is sent down following a bad start, and knows that the only reason he is back is because Moyer is injured and a trade did not work out. That could cause him to play with a chip on his shoulder and a lot of internal pressure to prove that the team got it wrong— the results may well look a lot like his first two starts of the season.

Valdez not hitting into a DP is basically an out less than usual.

Finally, the decision not to keep pitcher Cliff Lee at $9 million is harming Philadelphia more than anything, especially when the return looks so poor after hastily trading him to Seattle last winter. Pitcher Phillippe Aumont was demoted to A ball after posting a 7.43 ERA in Double-A, pitcher J.C. Ramirez has a 4.80 ERA in Double-A and outfielder Tyson Gillies is hitting .238 in Double-A while playing in only 26 games.

siiiiiiiiiiigh. Aumont’s a mess who shouldn’t have started at AA. Ramirez has been better lately. Gillies has been hurt.

Luckily for Jesus Sanchez, no one will even remember he’s the last vestige of the Abreu deal if he makes it up here within a couple of years.
Of course, I guess the casual fan loved the Abreu deal at the time because it was getting rid of a clubhouse cancer who didn’t show great effort on the field. Sigh.

Not just the casual fans—they were talking about this on 950 the other day—“addition by subtraction” BS.

Klaw
“I doubt he’s (Ibanez) tradeable, unless it’s for a bad contract they’re taking back. But I would promote Brown and bench Ibanez before dealing Werth and plugging in Brown. I think Brown will contribute more than Ibanez has been — it’s not a guarantee, as you can see from Justin Smoak’s struggles this year, but I like the odds — and he’s an immediate defensive upgrade as well.”
