Some Phillies Links For You, July 28, 2010: Strasburg Railroaded, Shane Pain, New Trade Focus

Victorino injured this time as homers save Phillies against D'Backs

"I don’t think it’s that bad I hope it’s not that bad, but I won’t know until I take an MRI," Victorino said. "It’s something there and obliques are things a lot of people say not to play through. I don’t want to make it worse, make it a month-long thing when I can make it three days. Hopefully I’ll feel better when I roll out of bed."

Shane Victorino, M.D.

Strasburg's inflamed shoulder part of sudden rash of MLB injuries
Someday, we'll tell our kids about this bright, fleeting star named Strasburg...

Cliff Lee is a video game pitcher

Cliff Lee is no longer an American League pitcher, he's a video game. The ridiculous lefty had to settle for a no-decision against Oakland on Tuesday despite another outstanding outing (9 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 13 K). For the year, Lee has 114 strikeouts against seven walks.

The Phillies traded the better pitcher...

John Smallwood: Who are these Phillies? Right now they are winners
Until they're not, I suppose...

Paul Hagen: Will Phillies make a pitch for starter?

The only problem with that picture is that the Royals surely would demand a shopping spree in the Phillies farm system in return. Not to mention that Greinke's earned run average is 4.01 after being banged around by the Twins on Monday night.

And here I thought he was good.

Phillies Notebook: Disabled list not likely for Phillies' Rollins
Well that's good.

Moyer getting second opinion
This sounds pretty bad for Jamie Moyer.

Team turns focus to Carmona
YUCK, NO! DO NOT WANT!

Report: MLB to begin 2011 season on Friday, not Sunday
I always thought that the issue in 2009 was the World Baseball Classic pushing everything back by a week.

R-Phils fall to Richmond after winning suspended game
Flying Squirrels win, 6-2. Who else hates all the cute minor league team names?

Durham Bulls rally to defeat Lehigh Valley IronPigs 5-3 in International League baseball
But Vance Worley goes six shutout innings, striking out seven. TRADE BAIT.

Star-divide

Washington Nationals Beat Atlanta Braves, 3-0. - Federal Baseball
Who needs Stephen Strasburg anyway?

Mets 8, Cardinals 2: Can Jerry Manuel Stay Suspended? - Amazin' Avenue
Jeff Francoeur hit a home run off Adam Wainwright. No, I'm not kidding.

Yeesh, thanks for the Lee stats, WC. That’s going to keep me brooding throughout the day.

by Trev223 on Jul 28, 2010 8:18 AM EDT reply actions

The stats aren’t nearly as upsetting as watching baseball tonight highlights of him pitching yesterday. Now that’s depressing.

And speaking of ex-phillie pitchers, Brett Myers threw a complete game yesterday. zOMG

3.10 era for the year…had 12 K’s last night against 1 BB and gave up 1 ER.

Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

Yowza. I guess with Myers it stings a little less, since his dominance was certainly less predictable (I’d assume) than Lee’s. Still, he’d have been cheap as hell — what could have been.

I think it was time for meathead to go. The change of scenery probably has done him well. No ill will for him, glad to see him doing well.

by Shazbot on Jul 28, 2010 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

For what it’s worth, Halladay’s SIERA is a little higher than Lee’s. They are ranked #4 and #5 among MLB qualifiers.

by taco pal on Jul 28, 2010 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

And by higher, of course, I meant lower.

by taco pal on Jul 28, 2010 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

That actually does lessen the sting a bit, thanks. Lee projects such a charismatic personality, and that, coupled with both his skill and the whole “One that got away…” allure, sometimes makes it easy to forget how good Halladay has been this year.

They are saying in DC that Strasburg has no structural damage and it’s just inflammation. Although inflammation could keep one out for weeks (see Polanco, Placido). He is being re-evaluated today, according to the various local media reports and Twitter here.

Forget Cliff Lee

How could we let go of Feliz? I mean, he hits almost as well as Juan Castro!

by philsandthrills on Jul 28, 2010 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

If we didn’t let go of players, the Astros would never have enough to fill up their rosters.

by WanderingMoses on Jul 28, 2010 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I’m starting to agree with you. I was pissed when he was initially traded, but RAJ’s ‘restock the farm’ rationale and Lee’s purported ‘unsignability’ was understandable back then. But all of this talk of trading more prospects and signing big $$ starters is very disconcerting. But I’ll withhold judgment until Saturday.

by Boundforbeach on Jul 28, 2010 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

If we were seriously willing to include Happ, I can’t see us not being able to top the package the Angels gave up for Haren without giving up our top A ball prospects.

The fact that we didnt top the Haren trade leads me to believe that it is all just “talk”.

by Clyde Simmons on Jul 28, 2010 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Can somebody do an alternate universe post/analysis (take some liberties) where:
1. We kept Lee
and possibly,
2. Didn’t tender Blanton
3. Moyer’s last deal was 1 year
4. Lidge didn’t start sucking

I’m sure just number 1 would be a pretty fun look at the world

I told you the Grienke talk would start appearing in newspaper articles. Hagen is not a great writer (The Houston’s?), but I agreed with his article, if not his reasoning.

by Cormican on Jul 28, 2010 9:54 AM EDT reply actions

I would love Grienke if the Royals would be reasonable, but they would probably want Dom Brown.

by Clyde Simmons on Jul 28, 2010 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

According to Rosenthal, they want two top-tier pitching prospects in return for Greinke.

Looking at why Greinke might be doing more poorly this year, I’m noticing two things on the PitchFX. The first is that he’s throwing a lot of 2-seam fastballs, which is odd. Until this year, he was a 4-seam/slider/cutter/change-up pitcher. Now he’s a 4-seam/2-seam/slider/change-up/cutter pitcher. It’s just as hot as his 4-seamer, but has more motion. The second is that his velocities are off. His fastballs are down from 94 to 93, his slider’s up from 86 to 87, and his change-up’s up from 83 to 84, although his cutter’s down from 75 to 74. For his main pitches, his velocity gap’s gone from 8 mph to 6 mph, which makes the adjustment a bit easier for pitchers. It’s not something that you’d really notice just from watching, but that is probably a factor in his lesser effectiveness this year (although he’s also been unlucky, based on his ERA/FIP/xFIP numbers).

Honor is no substitute for victory.

by The Dark on Jul 28, 2010 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

well of course a two seamer has more motion. The physics say so.

Frankly, Dom Brown for a 26 year old Ace, Cy Young winner would be pretty reasonable on the Royals part.

by Cormican on Jul 28, 2010 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

my thoughts as well.

by Bilzo on Jul 28, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I dunno, a cost controlled Dom Brown or a 13 mil a year pitcher who seems less effective since being Cy Young.

Think I would stick with the #1 prospect in baseball who costs less than a million the next 3 years.

by Clyde Simmons on Jul 28, 2010 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree, not only due to the fact that Dom is comming so cheep it would give the Phillz some Money to move around this year in FA

Hey Dez, it's 2am do you know where your mother is?

by sowhatifitisasportste on Jul 28, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed, but I would hardly call Grienke ineffective. Still, if I was the Royals’ fan I would be ticked if they traded away Grienke for anything less than Brown, Cosart and Colvin. And frankly, I’d want Schwimmer, Mathieson or similar thrown in for good measure.

by Cormican on Jul 28, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

and as a Phillies fan I would be ticked if they gave away Brown and/or both Colvin and Cosart

by Clyde Simmons on Jul 28, 2010 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

We have one thats currently on the 40 man roster, that wouldnt cost us a thing. Theres no reason to say we need a reliever when were not even using the best bullpen we have.

To further solidify the belief that the Arizona Diamondbacks may not be done trading, ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick reports via Twitter that GM Jerry DiPoto is discussing everyone except outfielders Justin Upton and Chris Young, right-hander Ian Kennedy and catcher Miguel Montero.
That would mean the club’s entire infield is in play, including third baseman Mark Reynolds, shortstop Stephen Drew, second baseman Kelly Johnson and first baseman Adam LaRoche.
Crasnick also mentioned that Johnson might be an ideal fit in St. Louis, but that his home-road splits suggest to clubs that perhaps Johnson’s season hasn’t been as good as the numbers say.
Also on the block are right-handers Edwin Jackson, Aaron Heilman and Chad Qualls.
