Your 2010 Philadelphia Phillies Starting Rotation, Now With 100% More Roy? Oswalt trade in place pending pitcher's approval

Turn that frown upside-down, Roy! (AP Photo/Pat Sullivan)

UPDATE (1:35 pm): Basically official.  J.A. Happ, Vance Worley, and Anthony Gose to Houston for Roy Oswalt and $11 million.  Wow.

UPDATE (1:07 pm): Multiple sources confirming that Oswalt will accept trade to Philadelphia, although trade not yet final.

The Phillies and Astros apparently have a deal in place that would send RHP Roy Oswalt to the Phillies, pending the approval of Oswalt himself, who famously has a full no-trade clause.  The deal would effectively increase the amount of "Roy" in the Phillies starting rotation from 20% to 40%.

According to several sources, the trade will likely include left-hander J.A. Happ and Single-A first baseman Jonathan Singleton.

The sticking point at this time is likely the 2012 team option on Oswalt's contract.

More on this as it develops.

In the meantime, your links after the jump...

Star-divide

Brown's bat, humility work well together

They will tell about a player so tall, so graceful, so powerful that comparisons to great lanky left-handed hitters like Ted Williams, Barry Bonds (the early years), Ken Griffey Jr. and Darryl Strawberry came to mind.

Holy crap, no pressure on the kid, huh?

Domo-nation: Brown makes quick impresssion as Phillies rout Diamondbacks

"I don’t know, a couple of bombs would have been nice," Brown said, smiling afterward. "But no, it went great. Let’s not get head over heels."

He's a real big-leaguer now, already mixing metaphors!

Phillies in the 1980s: From top to bottom
I'm not even that old (32) and it blows my mind that the 1980s are a source of retro/nostalgia. Waiting for the first "90s Night," complete with flannel and disjointed narratives.

Who will bag Bautista?

Philadelphia Phillies superscout Dave Hollins was at the Rogers Centre on Wednesday night, the sixth consecutive game he has seen the Jays play. He was also in Detroit for the weekend series. With second baseman Chase Utley injured, if the Phillies acquired Bautista, they would move Placido Polanco from third to second and play the major leagues’ home run leader at third.

Interesting. I like it.

Phillies looking at Indians' Carmona as trade deadline nears
Plleeaassse tell me this is all moot now that the Oswalt deal looks like it's going to happen.

Strasburg likely to miss Sunday start as well
Certainly not wishing injury on anyone, especially Strasburg, but... everything's coming up Milhouse!

& then there was 1...

If this trade goes through we are down to 1 southpaw starter. Last year we had Hamels, Lee, Moyer, & Happ. Moyer might be done for his career, we traded Lee, & now if we trade Happ we’ll be down to 1 Lefty Starting Pitcher in Cole Hamels. Personally I do not feel like he need to do this trade. We all know Kendrick is a good pitcher, usually hit or miss, but Happ last year was a monster for a rookie & I am not interested in trading him

basically he is a good pitcher when he shows up, when he doesn’t he’s not, but if he can learn to control himself he’ll be a quality 4 or 5 guy. you seem to believe that I am comparing him to Hamels, Halladay etc. all of which are great pitchers, u just have a high level of standards for using the word ‘good’ toward a pitcher or you just hate Kendrick, either way based on

I know you’re not comparing him to Hamels, or Halladay. However, you are calling him a good #4 or #5, and with that I completely disagree. His only good aspect is his relatively good control, but he mainly pitches to contact, and that contact is on the whole very hard.

I honestly have no idea how he manages to shut down teams some days, but those types of performances are not likely from a pitcher of his ability. The only real value he provides to the club is that he is cheap and under control for a while. I don’t hate the guy, and obviously I appreciate that he has pitched really well in a decent amount of games, but you have to be realistic. He’s a AAAA pitcher that is currently on the Phillies for lack of any other option.

Obviously, my comment earlier was a little snarky (and not serious), but having Kendrick and good near each other makes no sense in my mind.

And beyond that, you didn’t answer my question.

That is an interesting standard

Actually, I just checked an article on the average 5th starter, and it seems that Kendrick would be somewhere in the middle of the pack, though in terms of innings he’ll probably be near the top. So not quite as bad as I thought in comparison to the league.

by j reed on Jul 29, 2010 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

No

He’s a okay #5. He has an ERA of 4.60, an xFIP of 4.80. Neither of those are bad, but they are most certainly not “good”. He strangely finds great success some starts, but you can’t continue pitching much on the ML level with a 4.2 K/9.

by philsandthrills on Jul 29, 2010 8:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Hitters have slugged .495 (yes) against Kendrick this year. He’s a 4/5 starter only insofar as he can keep up his BABIP / strand-rate high-wire act. It’d be ill-advised to count on contributions from him going forward, other than as an emergency starter or long man.

by SethC on Jul 29, 2010 8:23 AM EDT up reply actions

The xFIP accounts for his BABIP and strand rate.

Everybody here is off. Kendrick is a mediocre #5. He is not an illegitimate major leaguer, but he isn’t “good” either, or even “okay”.

by taco pal on Jul 29, 2010 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Well I don’t know how I feel about this…obviously I like the idea of Oswalt, the guy certainly still has it, though he did just get a cortisone shot over the weekend for a lingering issue…(back maybe). The idea of Halladay – Hamels – Oswalt is frightening and would certainly be a huge advantage in any series. I guess my biggest concern is that if this team does not make the playoffs this year then they have one heck of a payroll for the remainder of this season and a pretty high one for next year as well. Probably an irrational thing to worry about but oh well I am.

Obviously the package going to Houston is what will be the biggest source of concern or delight for me. I like Happ, I like him a lot, but if you can trade him for a guy like Oswalt then you have to do it. I hope Worley and Mathieson are not involved in this or any trade but that’s not up to me.

I am curious though as to what RAJ has to say if this deal goes through and the inevitable question is asked…what changed between when Lee was dealt and trading for Oswalt? One extra guaranteed year on a contract with an option for a second year?

Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

by Baseball Nerd on Jul 29, 2010 8:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Lee might get between 18-20 mil on the open market…so that is roughly 2-4 mil more than Oswalt makes each of the next 2 years…not a ton of cash, but Lee wasn’t and won’t sign for 2 more years at 16 or 20 mil. I guess that’s RAJ’s rationale.

Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

It’s not the $$/year, it’s the number of years.

by taco pal on Jul 29, 2010 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

The only big issue I have with the Halladay / Lee deals is how Lee was handled. He never made a formal counteroffer, so we don’t know what he wanted. We just heard rumors. I agree, if he wanted 5-6 years, then that’s risky for a starting pitcher.

by Baseball Nerd on Jul 29, 2010 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I think we can assume that Lee would behave rationally. We know roughly what the market will bear for him, so what basis do we have for hoping that he would accept something that would be so much lower than that?

by taco pal on Jul 29, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Respect? Loyalty? He likes it in philly so wants to give a discount? He’s more worried about winning then cash? Because seriously what’s the difference between 60 million and 100 million? Cause he gets paid to play a game and he knows he shouldn’t make that much so he doesn’t think it’s right to take that much money?

That’s all the silly hideas that come to mind right now

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, spelling them out like that does illustrate how silly they are.

Also, before anyone makes the mistake of suggesting that the Halladay deal proves that it was reasonable to expect Lee to accept a hugely sub-market deal: no, it wasn’t. In Halladay’s case, we weren’t just giving him the contract, but we were also offering him a way out of Toronto one year early, when he’s nearing the end of his prime and had never pitched in the postseason. That is additional value that compensated him for accepting a sub-market deal for 2011-2013. What additional compensation would we have had to offer Lee in order to get him to sign a sub-market deal? Answer: none.

by taco pal on Jul 29, 2010 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I always think comparing what one athlete did for the ‘good of the team’ or whatever is always silly as people are unique and each has different motivations. You can’t say because A did something B will do the same.

I disagree with you about the Lee trade motivations and whether it should or shouldn’t have been done, but don’t disagree with this point at all

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

by taco pal on Jul 29, 2010 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

And since I passed high school math pretty well I know the difference, i was just being typical WIP caller who freaks out because of the numbers in a deal and saying ‘that should be enough’ because they only make 50-60 grand a year and therefore think somehow their perception should be everyone’s perception

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve read about the Happ, Matheison, Singleton and Gose package. I think it is way to much considering the Phillies are the only serious bidder.

You can argue that the Astros are essentially buying Singleton for 8 million dollars, but I think that the Astros would have to kick in money no matter who they get in return.

Unfortunatly for us, it seems once a deal involving the Phils gets leaked like this, it is usually 100% true.

by Clyde Simmons on Jul 29, 2010 8:21 AM EDT reply actions

not sure what the asking price is on bautista, but if it is anything beyond a fringe player or two, i dont see the need in making the deal. as much as dobbs is pretty poor this year, and ransom is unproven, bautista would only start for another month, and I just dont see the need in giving up any prospects for a month of service-time when the platoon is working at a replacement level

by Aaron King on Jul 29, 2010 8:22 AM EDT reply actions

In terms of the trade, I’ll withhold judgment (like basically everyone) until I see the prospects being dealt. In terms of actual decision making on RAJ’s part, though, Dave Cameron just posted a pretty compelling piece on Fangraphs looking at the broad points.

I agree generally w/ him that the deal is complicated beyond sound bytes, but the most telling bit I think is that there is some argument towards commending RAJ for not basing future decisions on past mistakes, i.e. not getting Oswalt simply because he doesn’t want to admit that trading Lee was a poor choice. In other words, by getting Oswalt, at least RAJ isn’t sticking to his guns to the (perceived) detriment of the team.

Obviously, this doesn’t take into account the money, loss of Werth, actual need for Oswalt (of which I’m not convinced, for sure), etc, etc. Still — it’s the first actual defense of RAJ that gives me pause.

by Trev223 on Jul 29, 2010 8:26 AM EDT reply actions

In other words, by getting Oswalt, at least RAJ isn’t sticking to his guns to the (perceived) detriment of the team.

We all make mistakes though. Yes it commendable that he’s willing to dust himself off but to a point. It is kinda in the job description esp. since their is alot of risk invovled.
I think what the article showed me and I don’t think it was the intent is that no one knows roughly what this team is capable of bankrolling or willing to bank roll. And unless you have a baseline you can’t gauge anything really. If I am working under the assumption that the Phillies are in the red as we were told then Amaro is just an asshole looking for the rush of closing a deal because this move could destroy our ability to remain competitive as we transition the team from old to new. If the money is there (and I know were not the Yankees) then perhaps we can absorb some cost and have the flexiblity to fill in the gaps with free agents. I just don’t want to end up like the DBacks 3 or 4 years down the road.

by j reed on Jul 29, 2010 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s a fair read. Again, I don’t really like getting Oswalt just because RAJ feels he needs to do something; whether or not this actually improves the team next year as well — which seems to be the preemptive company line — really does rely on whether or not the money is there. It’s really fascinating — read: horrifying, damning — that Amaro’s competence is dependent, at least in part, on the fungibility of the budget. Ideally, you’d like to see intelligent, cost-conscious moves regardless of wealth (not money-dumps, obviously, but valuation of cheap talent and a resistance to monster contracts).

by taco pal on Jul 29, 2010 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

I know you argue it wasn’t just about this year but, would you rather have

Lee this season and the prospect (proposed) going away for Oswalt plus the Type A Compensation

OR

Oswalt – minus the prospects – plus the extra 16 million that wasn’t on next years payroll without the compensation – and the additional 2 years (because I think the end the phillies will cave and pick it up)

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I would rather have the latter, but I think reasonable minds can differ on it.

Two things: in #2 we also have the prospects we got from Seattle, plus we still have the potential for compensation picks two years further down the road when Oswalt’s deal ends, provided that we pick up his option.

by taco pal on Jul 29, 2010 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, I forgot about the prospects from Seattle and the presumption that Oswalt is a type A in two years. I don’t know exactly how that type of thing is determined. Is it the most recent couple years, entire career? Just saying, right now he looks like a Type A but is that guaranteed?

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s pretty complicated. I think it’s an aggregate of certain stats for the last three years? Not sure though. No, it’s not a guarantee that Oswalt is a Type A. It’s more likely than not, but he could get injured or what have you.

by taco pal on Jul 29, 2010 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

So the odds are in his favor but it was more likely Lee would be a Type A this off season than Oswalt would be in the next two? Just for reasons of injury/declining performance?

Is there any reliable age related performance decline type numbers out there that take into account the type of pitcher Oswalt is?

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes. I wouldn’t put it in terms of “injury/declining performance” as such. It’s just the fact that most of the stats that Lee would need to be a Type A were already “booked.” Whereas with Oswalt, there’s more uncertainty because the cutoff date is off into the future a ways.

by taco pal on Jul 29, 2010 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok, thanks.

I just worry about Oswalt long term due to Size/Stature use, but that might purely be my own irrational paranoia

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

No, it’s a legitimate concern. We would need to deduct a certain % of the value of the picks for Oswalt as compared to the value of the picks for Lee. I don’t know if it’s because of size/stature or anything like that, but time introduces a level of uncertainty with respect to all players.

by taco pal on Jul 29, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Additionally, when is the CBA up, because rumors indicate that the draft might be the most affected thing in the next CBA.

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

well great

adding legit starters never hurts. Losing Singleton does, but if there’s 1 thing that I don’t mind sending it’s a 1b prospect. We’ll just draft 20 more players with high upside and one will hit. Awesome.

by Alon on Jul 29, 2010 8:49 AM EDT reply actions

agreed, even if you dont draft one, there is such an abundance of good hitting first basemen, you can pick up one. take fielder for example, he is a legit first basemen but every big market team is not in the market for first basemen. especially with howard locked down until 20-whatever, a good hitting first basemen is expendable for a top of the line starter

by Aaron King on Jul 29, 2010 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Fielder is different in that he’s a typical bad body player like his father. Those guys are prone to sharp, early declines. I think if Fielder were built thinner there’d be much more interest.

I agree with the overall point, but I hate trading over 50% of our top 20 prospects over the last 2 years for 3 starting pitchers.

by Cormican on Jul 29, 2010 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

I get that, what’s the usual success rate on a team’s top 20 prospects as in coming to the majors and being productive. Is it common that any given year a team’s top 20 will have a 50% fail rate

by Sept.28.Oct.27.Dec.28.2008 on Jul 29, 2010 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know what the exact percentage is, but it has to be higher than 50%… If that were the case there would be a higher turnover rate in the majors.

by Get A Grip on Jul 29, 2010 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t have time to track it down, but Prospects 1-5 usually pan out (as in offer some value to the team, not superstars, but at least usable Kevin Stocker types for a few seasons). 6-10 is somewhere around 50% success rate and below #15 I believe 10% pan out typically.

You may be onto something. I think it’s curious that Oswalt needs time to mull this over. Isn’t he the one who asked to be traded? And the Astros accommodated him. Now he needs to think about it. When is the last time you saw this happen in a trade of this magnitude? Oswalt was clearly aware that the Phillies have been talking about dealing for him for weeks. He could have easily told the teams he wouldn’t go to Philly.

To me, this just confirms the earlier reports that he really wanted to go to St. Louis. If he rejects this trade, he’s a giant ass…

HBT: Calcaterra chatter:

Rumor is Happ, Rizzotti & Worley. And…

As for Oswalt’s decision: everything I had been hearing last week was that he didn’t want to go to Philly due to some combination of him (a) not feeling comfortable with the organization; (b) not feeling that they had as good a chance to win as St. Louis; and © simply liking St. Louis. In the last week, however, the Phillies have been on a roll and the Cardinals have appeared to not be a realistic match.

We all have desires in this world, but sometimes we have to adjust them when the facts on the ground make them unreasonable. Given that two of the three things that had been turning Oswalt off to the Phillies are no longer operative, he may just say “screw it” and go where he has a chance to win something this year.

Doubt it. The money is to help with Oswalt’s deal, which is still putting us at or over budget. Brown’s going to be starting in the outfield next season, and Werth will be gone, unless by some miracle they can trade Ibanez or Victorino.

Well I guess it depends on what 'significant' really means...

I don’t think a scenario where Ibanez has a torrid second half (he’s off to a good start) and becomes a modestly valuable trade chip in the offseason is completely far-fethced…though unlikely. I guess my point is, it wouldn’t have to be Werth necessarily but if they save say 15 mil over 3 years on Oswalt’s deal that gives them a lot of added flexibility.

Nah, he’s playing too well this year to bench him right now. He can play 3B and both corner OF’s regularly, and I think he’s played other positions as well. He’d never sit against LHP, and even against RHP I think he’d find his way into the lineup.

This would assume Rollins, Utley, Victorino being healthy and no one else getting hurt. Big, big, big if.

by Rujasu on Jul 29, 2010 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

The question was prefaced with once everyone recovers, which to me meant everyone was healthy.

He’s also a righty performing much better against righties than lefties. (only 69 AB’s against lefties this year though)

So is he a better platoon option with Ibanz? Do you platoon Ibanez Brown Bautista and Francisco all together. How’s his outfield defense?

Figure was 5.6 MM I think.

by philsandthrills on Jul 29, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

So, all those prospects, all that finagling, and a ‘savings’ of 3.4 million dollars versus just keeping cliff lee for the one season and possibly on the hook for another 30+ million for the next two seasons? That seems to make sense to me.

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, you figure that Lee is gonna get at least 5-6 years, which is getting risky if anything happens. And those years will be about $20MM each.

This, vs. 2 1/3 years of Oswalt, at about for a total of around 30MM, depending on how much we get sent back. It’s a much safer bet.

Obviously, I would’ve loved Cliff here this year though, trading him was a fucking stupid idea.

by philsandthrills on Jul 29, 2010 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not sure how much safer a bet it is but for a team that is making moves (seemingly) because of payroll concerns, taking on a 32 year old pitcher (I think) with 30+ million and two years left seems a bit irresponsible.

by philiafan14364 on Jul 29, 2010 11:19 AM EDT reply actions

It takes as long as he wants it to take. And he made it clear a few times he wants to take the time in his decision. There’s a lot of factors that go into it not the least of which is that while he wants to win I’m sure the pressure of playing for the Phillies fans (and radio) when he is used to the comfort and (somewhat) anonymity of Texas is probably an issue.

Of course, he might just be stalling as a tactic for the whole team option thing. The longer he waits the more panicked the phillies get (he thinks)

So, here’s the thing. Is this trade necessitated by the poor performance of Joe Blanton (ostensibly the #3 pitcher this year) , because Kendrick has been (predictably) bad or the fact that Happ is still recovering from the injury?

What faith have they lost that they had when they made the Lee trade?

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

combination of the three?

In the 2 years he’s been in Philly (.5 08, 1 in 09, .5 in 10), he’s pitched statistically better in the second half. So I don’t think we have to worry much about him. Kendrick as you said is Jekyll and Hyde; I’m satisfied with him having a 50/50 shot of pitching like a #2-3 starter or giving up 5+ runs. And we already knew what Happ’s potential was. I think the trade was necessitated out of having a comparable playoff rotation to the Cardinals/Giants or the Yankees/Rays/BoSox. That and RAJ is an attention whore?

by soman319 on Jul 29, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok, so that kind of makes sense, they somehow thought blanton and or happ was the #3 that made the phillies comparable to those teams listed? (I don’t think the giants count cause did anyone really see them as a contender early on?)

But that sort of makes sense. Thanks

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I wasn’t trying to compare them to a playoff team. Their rotation (the Giants) however is pretty well set up for the playoffs. Lincecum, Cain, and Zito/Sanchez if they get there.

Blanton and Happ are both #3-4 starters, Blanton more of an inning eater. But if you have a chance to upgrade the #3 spot, then I think you make the move. We saw last year the Cliff Lee effect, where our #1 could pretty much guarantee us wins, 1-2 wins a series. Better pitching = higher probability of winning out multiple series. It’s simple math.

I’m confused, as I understand it, the success or failure of domonic brown will decide the next 15 years of phillies success.

No offense to Singleton but aren’t power hitting first baseman one of the more easier prospect holes to fit? I mean the only reason Ryan Howard isn’t a DH is cause the NL doesn’t have one.

Singleton’s upside is tremendous. He’s only 18, showing how mature he is already, more mature that Ryan Howard was when he made it to the bigs. And I believe he is more athletic that Ryan

I’m not sure how much his athleticism matters, it’s first base, it’s where you put the non athletic guys.

If he were good enough and mature enough as you say they would move him to a position of greater need wouldn’t they (you know, like the gaping future hole at 3rd base) but why haven’t they?

How is it you know so much about Singleton all of a sudden?

Super fast. Tremendous outfield arm.

Has held his own at every level while under the normal age at each level, which is pretty impressive. But he hasn’t yet excelled at any level. This would suggest that he will excel at a level once he’s the right age for it, but we haven’t seen it yet.

They are different. Gose may develop power. Bourn was never expected to develop power. Bourn always had great strike-zone judgment. Gose has shown only flashes of that.

Agreed, but without the power developing he’s projectable to be similar to Bourn. If his power develops he projects as more of a Strawberry type player (not as good as Straw was, but similar in profile plus speed, plus arm, plus power, etc.)

Singleton has very good potential to be a really, really special player with good strike zone judgement, good power, can hit for average and he’s still projectable.

No one in the current announced package is on his level. Gose may one day prove to be far superior (his ceiling is pretty ridiculous) or he may never make it past A+ if his power doesn’t develop and his strike Zone discipline remains inconsistent.

Preaching the Inglewood Jack

Well see, I disagree with both premises as the steroid thing has no actual proof behind it and the premise that the yankees destroyed baseball is disproven daily as league wide attendance hits new highs and the world series continues to be won by a variety of teams with a variety of payrolls as opposed to the yankees doing it every year.

I’m also always fascinated that the yankees are singled out when the red sox pretty much spend as much as they damn well please as well

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Completely agree on the singling out. I just truly hate the Yankees. I despise the revenue sharing situation, where some teams are continually bad, but because they are making a profit, stay in power. Basically, the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer

Preaching the Inglewood Jack

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Jul 29, 2010 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

That isn’t the yankees fault, as it happens in all professional sports (poorly run teams don’t get new owners because of money – the clippers are often the most profitable nba team because their owner plays the system)

You blame the Yankees for issues that aren’t their fault. Cheap owners isn’t the yankees fault, poor revenue from tv deals isn’t the yankees fault, and again, the red sox are out there doing the exact same thing.

Look at the Twins, Carl Pholad has billions of dollars and yet doesn’t spend it as much as he could, how is that the yankees fault?

The Astros have basically handed the Phillies the ability to re-sign Werth. Moyer’s 8+ million comes off the books and a collective 3+ million does as well. You can afford Oswalt and Werth.

Whether or not the budget is busted, the phillies doubtfully have enough room in their budget to fit in werth. They didn’t have enough before this trade, according to all reports, and now they have less for next season.

Yes I do. If they are choosing to raise the budget even more, why not re-sign a starter instead of doing something that could hamper the chances of continuing this sensational run? Another go at the WS means even more money. The more the Phillies go to the WS the more the owners make in revenue. The budget should go up relative to success and the demand that needs to be met for it.

Also, I know that RAJ has stated that we will stay around the 140 million range for payroll, however with another WS win, I could see ownership changing its mind to up payroll to 150-155 area to keep this dynasty rolling

Only if they somehow make an extra 10-15 million dollars by winning a second world series.

There’s a limit to how much money they can make without a much better tv deal

How many more sell outs are they going to get that they don’t already get?

Merchandise. That’s were they make money. Playoffs = more, WS = even more, Winning it all = even, even more.

well if they up ticket prices next year, there will continue to be sellout crowds especially with WS win

In this economy, there’s no guarantee of that

It comes out to $3,535,407

Offer Werth 10-12M and he probably won’t return your calls for the next decade due to insult.

by Cormican on Jul 29, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with Scott K. wouldnt you have the money from Moyer coming off the books to get Werth to stay. I mean Werth actually loves playing here so I could see him taking a bit less money

by MalibuLSV23 on Jul 29, 2010 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s a foregone conclusion that you let Werth walk and get the compensatory draft picks next summer. Dom is definitely next years starting RF…. UNLESS you somehow move Ibanez. Which is laughable at the moment.

by Get A Grip on Jul 29, 2010 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

the ability to move Ibanez is getting less laughable by the day

I’d like to hear from all the folk who couldn’t’ be bothered to worry about the length (or dollar amount) of his deal when it was signed who are now lamenting its lame duck ness :)

If we keep Singleton, think about this...

Within the next five years our outfield could be:

LF – Singleton
CF – Gillies/Hewitt/Gose/whomever is not traded or doesn’t bust
RF – Brown

Yes, so you stated, and I’m going to ask again how many games has he played in LF? As it’s a bigger more immediate need you think they’d give him a shot if they felt he could play there?

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, for now the outfield is rather crammed. Remember, you have to get the max number of at bats and Singleton can play 1B unlike someone like Jiwan James.

You beat me to it. At lower levels in the minors your position doesn’t matter as much. At bats do, though.

If he’s a better prospect than the other position players in left field and he’s such a can’t miss guy, the sooner you move him to left field the sooner he adjusts and is ready. So either there are better prospects in left or?

I saw em, I don’t agree with em, but I saw em

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

So you think that if he’s talented, he should be up immediately? You realize how rare it is for a player to come up at 19-20 years old and succeed?

by wildcatlh on Jul 29, 2010 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

No that’s not actually what I said. I don’t agree that he shouldn’t be moved as soon as possible. He can do it or he can’t, the sooner he starts the learn the sooner he’s ready.

Nowhere did I say he should be up right away, but if he projects as a major league left fielder – you find out sooner than later

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

The Phillies current top LF prospect would probably be Leandro Castro. Gillies also might become a leftfielder. I’m not sure about his arm strength. The Phillies will worry about moving Singleton off of first base if he makes it to AA or AAA and is hitting too well to be ignored.

by Governator on Jul 29, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Besides

Singleton is 18 years old. While LF might be a “more immediate need”, he’s still at, at an absolute minimum, 3-4 years away. He has plenty of time to learn to play in LF if that’s his eventual position.

by wildcatlh on Jul 29, 2010 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

there was an interview with Singleton where he stated he could play LF, has played it in the past, and would be open to it.

“played it in the past”

by Clyde Simmons on Jul 29, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

And I played the piano in the past.

What a player says about his ability without actually doing it on the field (even in low minors) is irrelevant to me

by SportingFanaticism on Jul 29, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

this isn’t like playing the piano, it is a competitive sport. A coach would not play a player in LF if he couldn’t play there.

Regardless, I am not saying he definitely makes the transition, just that we could at least have the option in order to get an excellent bat in the lineup.

by Clyde Simmons on Jul 29, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Hewitt is a massive bust, i honestly don’t think he’ll ever move past A+ if that.

really? I mean isnt it too soon to judge?

by MalibuLSV23 on Jul 29, 2010 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

not really

this is his third minor league season. he’s shown little progress, leading the SAL in strikeouts. Age-appropriate in A-ball, his line reads like this: 3.3 BB%, 33.9%, .331 SLG, .259 wOBA, .122 ISO. I’m sure he’s a nice fellow, but he really can’t hit a baseball.

I'm stunned

If we get Oswalt plus 11 million for Happ, Worley and Gose then Wade is probably managing to get less return for Oswalt than he did for Schilling.

An absolute win for the Phillies to avoid giving up any of Cosart, Colvin or Singleton for a frontline starter with 1.5 years left on his deal.

by Governator on Jul 29, 2010 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

I don't know.

I really liked what I saw in Vance Worley in that one perfect inning. Kid will become a hell of a pitcher in the future, I predict.

I was hoping that the only pitcher they had to give up was Happ. I have a feeling that Vance will become something special down the line.

by MyronBales on Jul 29, 2010 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

it is kind of a blessing that Happ got hurt cause we probably would have fallen in love with him by now

by MalibuLSV23 on Jul 29, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

"12:51pm: Gose and Happ are definitely in the deal, tweets CSN Philly's Jim Salisbury."

So the Worley part is still a question.
