My only hope is that this ‘former GM violation’ can leech into other sports as BIlly King is now back in the NBA

If Happ has enslaved a colony of little green men with Irish accents to ensure his strand rate stays where it’s at.

Maybe

Wade is a mole still on the Phillies Payroll. He helps us to a championship in 2008 by giving us Linge, now he’s trying to help us with a second one with the Oswalt trade. He’s helped much more as the Astros GM than he ever did as the Phillies GM.

I'm not drunk I'm just drinking.

Wait, he has his lowest whip of his career since his first season this year? That’s awesome sauce.

His K rate seems to be pretty high just based on a quick glance at his K’s per ip this year versus previous years…again back to 2001.

Is there someway to see his run support per game for his career/by season?

I’d like to see how playing in Huston has affected his pitching.

Question:

After comparing Happ’s 2009/2010 stats to Oswalts 2009/2010 stats…

Is Oswalt really that much of an improvement over a (presumably) healthy Happ?

Are we really getting something better here?

You're taking Happ's one year and comparing it to Oswalt's 9th in the majors?

Doesn’t make much sense.

Oswalt > >>>>>> > Happ

Happ had one nice year as a rookie. Oswalt has been having great seasons since ’01.

Drew didn’t want to play here

Rolen did until the Vet turf started wrecking his back

Schill did. But he and Rolen were both critical of mgmt. Those were dark days. We wouldn’t spend the money, which the team always claimed was because they didn’t have the luxury boxes etc that the Bank brought. Even though Schilling was/is an ass and talks too much, you couldn’t complain about his heart or willingness to take the ball.
As for Rolen, that shit field and the dickiness of Bowa combined to make him want to leave. Cincy seems sure happy to have him. And w/o looking it up, I’d bet no one at 3rd has better power numbers than Rolen since he left. Polanco may be on pace to better his average.

What a surprise...

ESPN MLB insider Jayson Stark says the Roy Oswalt deal to the Phillies is in Oswalt’s hands. Stark thinks the Phillies would have been better off keeping Cliff Lee.

i think everyone can agree with that

by MalibuLSV23 on Jul 29, 2010 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Not 100% on that, we have Oswalt for next year and poss 2012 where Lee was gone after this year

by Sept.28.Oct.27.Dec.28.2008 on Jul 29, 2010 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Lee is a better pitcher but i doubt us signing him after this year, who knows

by Sept.28.Oct.27.Dec.28.2008 on Jul 29, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t completely. Lee was for this year only, whereas Oswalt is around at minimum next year and possibly 2012. It’s unfortunate that the prospects we received for Lee aren’t having incredible years, because then I believe that the deal would be seen in a different light. I think that RAJ did have the right idea in trading Lee in order to restock the farm system. And I am SO sick of hearing about this topic. It’s getting almost as bad as the national media talking about how under appreciated McNabb was when he was here.

So if Oswalt doesn’t want to stay and declines the option, we pay nothing and he becomes a FA.

Actually said to have a great glove...

He has monster range in the field which means he gets to a lot of balls and just doesn’t finish the play. The low minors field conditions tend to add a bunch of errors for guys like him as well.

first reaction

This is a marvelous trade for the Phils.

Happ is a decent #4 starter whom you can’t use in the playoffs. Gose could be special if he fills out and learns how to steal bases, but athletic OFs are the one thing our system has in bulk. Villar is a decent-upside prospect who’s years away, might or might not be able to stick at SS, and has no power.

For that, we get a borderline ace at a basement price, keep our top five or six prospects, and keep guys like Worley and Mathieson whom we’ll need to promote for budget reasons. Huge win for Amaro.

Agreed

But it sucks to lose another SS prospect. Who’s the future – Galvis?

Perfect analysis dajafi

But forgot one thing – we get the ace for at least a year and a half, if not another year after that.

What would you do if you had the Phillz GM spot?

I’d tell you what I’d do
Two Roys at the same time

maybe RAJ’s boyfriend at Stanford was Roy so he needed 2 to remind him even more of his good ole days.
Plus they are pitchers so I guess that makes RAJ’s the catcher. hardy hardy harrr get it!

You think you’d need to be philliz GM spot to get two roys at the same time?

i’ve got tickets for the Phil’s vs. Nats game tomorrow night in DC. It was Happ’s turn in the rotation and I think Oswalt was due up in Houston… any chance I’ll see Oswalt pitch?

What are they saying at Astros SB nation?>

Hey Dez, it's 2am do you know where your mother is?

Its one thing to trade Roy to rebuild. But to trade Roy for the sake of trading him was a bad move. We probably could have gotten a better deal in the offseason.

i want singleton…if its 4…then i can settle without him possibly

I know, but it seems like we’re setting ourselves up to be the modern version of the ‘85 Cardinals. Ozzie Smith, Willie McGee, and Vince Coleman, meet Jonathan Villar, Anthony Gose, and Michael Bourn. I don’t like it.

11 mil
seems like a gross overpay.

Wow, this is def a win for the phillies and Ruben

The 11 mil is huge and a lot of people keep talking about happ being young. But, he will be 28 at the end of this year and while he’s a nice pitcher, there’s not much upside. I do hope he does well in Houston.

If he was 24 it’s a diffrent story but 28 isn’t old however the older you are the smaller your upside is.

Yes, I agree.

Happ may pitch another 10 years and be serviceable, but he will probably certainly never be a top of the rotation kind of guy.

By serviceable, I mean solid - not Kendrick serviceable.

Cardinals to Oakland in the Holliday deal
Oakland to Toronto for Michael Taylor
Toronto to Houston for Gose

So three times in about a year.
