Per Baseball America, the Phillies were active on the first day of the international signing period yesterday, inking 16-year old Venezuelan shortstop Francisco Silva to a $200K bonus. As Phuture Phillies notes, Silva's profile bears some resemblance to Freddy Galvis -- i.e. good glove, questionable bat. The Silva signing continues two trends for the Phillies in Latin America: (1) focusing on the international market for their shortstop prospects (think Galvis, Jonathan Villar); and (2) generally sticking to midlevel signings (even Domingo Santana only got $300K). I'd wager that the organization isn't yet done on this front, as BA has also linked them to Venezuelan shortstop Anderson Gonzalez, who won't be eligible to sign until the end of the month (subscription required for link).
