When a trade like this happens, and Oswalt and Ruiz meet in the afternoon and then play together at night, how do they work on their signals?

I wouldn’t… Sometimes that is the most hittable thing you are going to get— I heard the saying that in each at bat there is really only at most one really hittable pitch, so you should swing at it when you get the chance.

Cause Utley still can’t play and polanco is the best 2nd base option they have? ANd Valdez sucks worse

However had Valdez been in the lineup Polanco wouldn’t have dodged the throw to 3rd and the lead runner is out and it’s still a 1 run game.

Dobbs: .272 (2010)/.313 (career)

Is there a precedent for new pitchers having a shaky night when working with a new catcher that they’ve only just met? It seems like there should be but I’m sure somebody smarter knows.

by esentman on Jul 30, 2010 7:46 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t know that there is, but I have noticed that there seems to be a learning curve for players who are transitioning— Cliff Lee pitched poorly in his first game for Texas (just over 24 hours after he was traded). However, Happ bucked this trend— he pitched 6 innings, allowing no runs on 2 hits, walking 4, and striking out 6.

by dannijd on Jul 30, 2010 10:12 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Cue the “Oswalt sucks, why didn’t we keep Happ” calls into WIP tonight. Jeebus, can’t the guy get used to his new team and catcher before everyone starts in on him? The Nats are hot, too, BTW.

by WholeCamels on Jul 31, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s probably completely irrational, but I loathe Nyjer Morgan with every ounce of my being. He’s like the new, not-quite-as-good Juan Pierre.

Also, can we please turn in some good at bats against Craig Stammen? He’s Craig Stammen for Chrisakes.

by PhillyFriar on Jul 30, 2010 7:48 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I live in Pittsburgh.

He’s like the shitty Cliff Lee of Pittsburgh. Pirates fans bitch and moan about how the Pirates should never have traded him. I’m pretty sure people here think he’s Rickey Henderson.

by mattjg on Jul 30, 2010 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I LOL’d at the “shitty Cliff Lee of Pittsburgh” line.

That was a smart trade for the Pirates. Morgan’s a nice enough player, but they’re not going to be good anytime soon, and it was totally worth the gamble on Milledge’s upside. Plus, the Nata should never have cut bait on Hanrahan — he’s legit, and is a better reliever than anyone on the Nats now (and possibly anyone on the Phillies now, maybe Madson excluded).

by PhillyFriar on Jul 30, 2010 7:56 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

At least the Braves demoting All-Star/Gold-Glover Nate McLouth has shut some of them up over that trade. Morton has been a disappointment, but Gorkys Hernandez (who is currently hurt) and Jeff Locke could have value down the road.

I love the commercials but sales have actually been down since the ad campaign began. Personally, I think it targets the wrong demographic…

by TwistyWristy on Jul 30, 2010 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions

The campaign is supposed to appeal to women, but these products are bought by men. And one suggestion is that men are a little offended by these ads.

by essman on Jul 30, 2010 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

It targets women, right? I was thinking that it would be more effective, because it’s like the dude is trying to take your girlfriend, so you have to buy Old Spice to win her back. I obviously don’t understand male psyche as well as I thought I did.

"Clever girl."

by LeepinLizardz on Jul 30, 2010 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Or, women are supposed to buy it for their guys, who aren’t supposed to care. I doubt that my husband would make me take it back.

by LeepinLizardz on Jul 30, 2010 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t buy it, but I also wouldn’t veto my wife’s purchase of it. Or of any similar product for which she has a coupon at the same time the product is on sale. (That’s her shopping MO.)
