Some Phillies Links for You, July 6, 2010: St. Lee Elsewhere, Downtown Domonic Brown, Rushin' Utley

Phillies getting rid of Jayson Werth?

Philadelphia Phillies right fielder Jayson Werth is a beloved man in the City of Brotherly Love. He's hit .351 in the past two World Series for the Phils and has a workmanlike attitude that Phillies fans eat up like it's a cheesesteak from Pat's done the right way (with Cheese Whiz and fried onions, thank you very much).

I love when people who don't know anything about Philadelphia/Philadelphians write like they do.

R-Phils defeat New Britain, 10-3
Some interesting performances by some questionable prospects.

Report: Twins offer top prospects Ramos and Hicks for Cliff Lee - Big League Stew - MLB  - Yahoo! Sports
This would be a great outcome for the Phillies; keeps him out of the National League. Guys, he wasn't coming back here. All the fans who were clamoring and looking for rays of hope to that end resembled nothing but jilted ex-boyfriends, hoping she would "see how wrong she was" and try to get them back...

Utley already challenging timetable
I would love this but I want him mostly to focus on getting 100% better for next season.

Rich Hofmann: It's a defining week for Phillies
You can only count on the Phillies' "ability" to surge in late summer and September so much. It's bad strategy to let your team fall way back in the race and count on your opponents to stumble.

Even if J.A. Happ's stuff is getting better in his rehab starts, the results aren't there yet.

Oh, and Domonic Brown hit a solo home run too. Turning into an interesting prospect, that Brown kid.

Cowherd is like an android the ESPN scientists created in a lab. He’s douchier than Kilborn and dumber than Kornheiser!

he can indeed be quite annoying, least favorite person on ESPN Radio

by The Fish on Jul 6, 2010 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

he’s smarmy, has a bad voice, is generally condescending, and quite often moronic.

Like Eskin, the only way to defeat these people, is to cease talking about them, and not listen to them. Talking about how stupid they are only fuels their ratings, salary, and job security.

I’ve already discussed him too much.

Basically, I would characterize Cowherd’s MO as prostrating himself before the strong. He’s sort of like one of the drones from Mean Girls. The main theme of his commentary is why it is justified – in fact, morally required – to show favoritism and devote all your attention to the Cowboys, Yankees, Brett Favre, etc. The guy is a lickspittle

by taco pal on Jul 6, 2010 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Cowherd is actually my favorite ESPN radio person (low bar to clear). I don’t always agree with him, but I find his arguments interesting. Yes, he cherry picks stats for his arguments and he favors certain sports/markets, but I go in knowing that so it doesn’t bother me. Frankly I have yet to hear a radio talk guy who isn’t kind of douchy, it comes with the territory (local guy Alan Handleman is pretty good, but he doesn’t talk sports much)

by taco pal on Jul 6, 2010 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

To me, Mike & Mike are mostly entertainment, and 20% sports talk. I really like their show, but I don’t consider it a sports talk show the way the Herd is, or Rome is Burning (if only), etc.

Yeah, but their 20% sports talk is still higher quality than Herd or Rome’s 100%.

As much as I miss watching Utley play everyday, I’d much rather him get healthy for next year than rush himself in this season and risk re-injuring himself. Even if he comes back early, we could really be out of it at that point and I’d hate to see him get injured again trying to help a lost cause. And how many games would we realistically be able to make up in that extra week with Utley that we may not have if we still had Polanco and Valdez / Dobbs / Ransom manning second and third?

by Baseball Nerd on Jul 6, 2010 9:39 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed— another thought (although not as important in the extremely long run, and depending on how Valdez continues to hit and field)— could Utley returning too early actually COST the team wins? I want him back (healthy AND playing well) as much as any fan… but if he comes back before he is ready, he may not be as good an option as leaving Polanco at second and some combo of Valdez, Dobbs, and Ransom at third. I hope he is right, and that he is back (in a form that will allow him to play well and avoid reinjury) sooner than expected— but not if it increases his risk of repeated/lingering injury or is a detriment to this team.

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe Charlie snubbed Votto just to make him go all Hulk on the Mets. Too bad the next team they’re playing is ours.

Living in North Carolina, you get a new found respect for even the crappy places in Philly to get a cheesesteak. Down here, we have one place Fat Phillys in Fuquay-Varina (about an hour from me) that gets Amoroso rolls and makes a convincing cheesesteak. Otherwise, I can’t get anything close. I’ll be up later this week and my first 2 stops will be Wawa and Giuseppi’s in Richboro, PA (my wife wants to drag me to Joe’s in Nazareth, but I order a philly cheesesteak there and they put pizza sauce on it. That’s a pizza steak, you idiots.)

Lee to the Twins

Actually sounds like the best of the realistic options to me— the Twins are an American League team not the Evil Empire— if Lee went there, I would have no problem continuing to root for him there. Since he is not coming back here, I really hope for that outcome.

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 11:32 AM EDT reply actions

On the flip side, how much must it suck to be in a new uniform in a new city every six months like Cliff Lee? You get the feeling he’s going to demand a long contract with a no-trade clause come free agency?

In his Metro column today, Cataldi suggests that Amaro (who he accuses of killing the Phillies) call up the mariners and offer to reverse the trade. Chances of it working: Slim to None… and Slim is on the 60 day DL.

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

If Cataldi says something, strongly consider whether the opposite is true. This almost makes me doubt any criticism I’ve had of Amaro.

Also, 99% of anything written in the Metro is garbage. There’s a reason why it’s free.

by taco pal on Jul 6, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

True… but considering my current budget constraints, the price was right— and usually Cataldi says at least one thing good enough to cause debate in my office.

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes. Ramos alone is better than Aumont, Gillies, Ramirez, Marson, Donald, Carrasco and, for now at least, Knapp. That said, Ramos has no position on the Twins roster with Catcher and First Base being locked up for several years.

by Cormican on Jul 6, 2010 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Most prospect analysts will see it that way, but I’ve never actually been a big fan of Ramos’. He’s probably better than the guys you’ve listed, but I want to see Gillies get 300 healthy at bats at Double-A and Knapp get back to full health again before I’d be ready to declare Ramos the absolute best of the bunch.

by PhillyFriar on Jul 6, 2010 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s why I couched the Knapp comment with “for now”. If Aumont’s stuff plays up in the bullpen, he could also surpass Ramos, but for now Ramos is better than the rest of the players Lee has been swapped for.

by Cormican on Jul 6, 2010 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Is Aumont definitely back in the bullpen for good? He isn’t starting per se in Clearwater, but he’s sort of being used as a quasi-starter (that is, he’s coming in and pitching three innings per appearance rather than one, or whatever). I feel like they’re just trying to get him his confidence back, rather than changing his role.

by taco pal on Jul 6, 2010 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure, but I’m a believer that his long term future is as a late inning bullpen guy. I agree they are currently just trying to build confidence more than anything else.

by Cormican on Jul 6, 2010 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you’re right, but I agree with Cormican that he’s probably slated for the bullpen long term.

by PhillyFriar on Jul 6, 2010 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

he’s [Aumont’s] probably slated for the bullpen long term

Good. Not that I think it means that he desevres a demotion, or that it is a demotion. I think relievers should be made and conditioned in the minors. First, why overpay for it on the FA market. Second, It’s a different animal than starting all the way down to the physiologly. And why not train someone for high leverage stituations before they get to the bigs. The failed starter Scarlet letter that relievers wear should have been gone a long time ago but I still hear it thrown around alot.

by j reed on Jul 6, 2010 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. It’s a different mindset and some players are just better cut out to throw two or three different pitches at maximum effort to 4 or 5 hitters, as oppossed to setting pitches up, working through a lineup 2 or 3 times a game and waiting around 4 or 5 days before doing it again.

by Cormican on Jul 6, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Fun fact...

Roy Halladay has averaged just a bit over 7.2 innings per start this year.

by PhillyFriar on Jul 6, 2010 12:40 PM EDT reply actions

For sake of comparison— what is league average for a starter as far as innings per start— I am actually surprised that his average is that low.

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

The only way that should seem “low” is if you think he pitched into the ninth inning in more than half of his starts, which he didn’t.

I have no idea, nor is it any of my business, what the particular concern was. But note that the internet has very long memories. There is stuff out there that I wrote 10 years ago that is perfectly tame, legal, ethical and G-rated but still has had negative professional implications (I was predicting something in my industry that did not occur). Never post something that you wouldn’t want someone to read in court 10 years from now.

And never. Ever. Link something you write that is not work-related to a work e-mail address. They will find you. That includes this blog.

It could be my last week in Philly too. We can never know where the wind may take us…

by FuquaManuel on Jul 6, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Mine as well… I was more wondering whether he would be traded if thingsdo not go well this week…

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

So graduate school for you FM?

by j reed on Jul 6, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

My thoughts are that Yahoo Sports kind of sucks…but maybe that’s just me.

It’s not. They blow.

They sited FoxSports this time… I generally like them.

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Who’s ready for this lineup card?

Rollins
Victorino
Ibanez
Howard
Dobbs
Francisco
Sardinha
Valdez
Kendrick

’cause if this is true, that is the future.

by Cormican on Jul 6, 2010 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Or would it look more like this?

Rollins
Victorino
Ibanez
Howard
Brown
Dobbs
Valdez
Sardinha
Kendrick

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d imagine if they traded Werth now, then they are planning on bringing Brown up. Probably a bad idea.

by FuquaManuel on Jul 6, 2010 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed on both counts.

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

The Phillies (pre-RAJ, admittedly) have slow played all of their prospect development. Platooning Vic and Werth (understand they weren’t prospects like Brown is), waiting until late August to bring Utley up in age his 24 season, pretty much ditto for Howard. Brown is 22, and while he’s tearing it up in the minors, it would seem out of character for the Phillies to rush him up so soon.

They may do it, but teams have their idiosyncrasies (the Marlins tend to rush prospects and rarely send blue chip prospects through Triple-A prior to calling them up), sometimes teams break their MO, but if history is a reliable gauge, I think Ben’s about to get way more playing time.

by Cormican on Jul 6, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

yahoo sports has seemed to be apparently on the cutting edge regarding werth talks.

i agree with fuqua – the phils could catch fire also and they may not move him. you don’t know if he’ll be moved regardless

True… particularly considering that his hitting has been streaky and the market for outfielders may not be that good.

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know if it was mentioned but Drabek pitched a no-hitter the other day . Nice to see him perform well even if he’s no longer one of our ducklings.

by j reed on Jul 6, 2010 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

I think it came up yesterday, but yes, it is good to see one of our former prospects do well— now if we could just get that kind of performance (or even just something really good) from one of the pharmhands acquired in the Lee trade.

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Ramirez had a hell of an outing last night, FWIW.

by Trev223 on Jul 6, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

There were no links yesterday so maybe it came up in the game thread.

by j reed on Jul 6, 2010 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

It was in the Postgame thread from Sunday’s game

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Alright, this Happ nonsense is throwing a monkey wrench in my "Let’s, before he throws a few more stinkers, package KK with a fringy prospect for Wigginton/the right hand bat off the bench we still need despite the injury snfu " idea.

by j reed on Jul 6, 2010 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

*Unless the Phillies work out a trade for Dan Haren. Then your plan works again.

by Cormican on Jul 6, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

But we need him to replace Bad Blanton

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not too worried about Cupcakes.

by j reed on Jul 6, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Same here. He’s still recovering from his injury to an extent, I imagine. He’ll work himself back to his typical mediocrity by August.

by Cormican on Jul 6, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Although Happ-a-long is different. What gives with that? Other than his current bout of elbow soreness he did reinjure the oblique last season which I think is more worrisome. Ugh I hope that wasn’t the prelude to a Sportsman Hernia. I mean I expected him to regress -

but I hope it’s not -

by j reed on Jul 6, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Me too… I am really hoping that once he finally gets healthy and back up to speed that he will look something like he did last year (granted with a little bit of regression due to his luck based statistics being a little bit too good to be true last year). I am beginning to wonder, however, if he is going to wind up spending the whole season down in AAA.

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

We need him to replace Kendrick so we have Ha-Ha-Ha-Bla-Mo!

Blessed be BaseBa’al – please look over your humble servant Kyle Kendrick

by j reed on Jul 6, 2010 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I honestly think that for better, for worse, or for biscuits Kendrick and Valdez are going to be Phillies starters for the duration. (Which begs the question: What deals did they make with the devil for this to happen?)

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Get Off My Mound!

The A’s are now selling tee-shirts with the words “Get off my mound!” in memory of his little dispute with A-Rod… What do you think would have happened had A-Rod crossed the mound when Halladay was on it?

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

Well they shouldn’t have put the team logo on it – don’t the A’s have a legal department.

by j reed on Jul 6, 2010 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Why shouldn’t the A’s have put their logo on the tee shirts?

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s a dispute between two players or is this unwritten rule (which I found stupid) something the A’s organization chooses to endorse? Seems odd to me that they would publicly do so and most companies seem pretty cautious when it comes to possible defamation of character which you could argue occured to A-Rod. Not a lawyer but that’s what the article seemed to suggest.

by j reed on Jul 6, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

True… I did not look at it that way.

by dannijd on Jul 6, 2010 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t see any way that’s defamation.

by phatj on Jul 6, 2010 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

You don’t think the intention of that was to say that A-Rod is an arrogant prick to whom the rules don’t apply because he plays for the Yankees. Seems pretty loud and clear. Certainly the A’s players must feel that way just in their opposition to it. Even Braden said of the shirt and the organization’s unwillingness to pull it:

“I think we all understand where they are coming from, but it’s just a serious, gross, lack of tact,” Braden said Monday. “At the end of the day, I hope I do not become associated with that kind of approach.”

So is this defamation in a legal sense? I don’t know because as I said I’m not a lawyer but, I have enough common sense to know that if I’m already strapped for cash I don’t run the risk of pissing of the those with deep pockets over a marketing ploy.

by j reed on Jul 7, 2010 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Thank you national reporter man for the obligatory cheese steak reference. I don’t think people would’ve understood it without yet another tired reference to either Geno’s or Pat’s, depending on which sub-par establishment you arbitrarily choose to frequent.

I’m sure every city gets it. Memphis and Beale Street or Graceland. Raleigh and pork BBQ. Pittsburgh and Primanti Bros., etc. Pretty unimaginative, but not everyone is Hunter S. Thompson.

Gary = Jacksons, steel, Music Man

by taco pal on Jul 6, 2010 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Really? – All I know is that it smelled and looked like a gianormus truckstop when I drove thru it. I knew it was industrial but didn’t know it was involve with steel – I thought no active mills remained in the USA. Plenty of scrap metal smelting like the arc furnance plant in Coatesville, PA.

by j reed on Jul 6, 2010 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Steel isn’t there anymore. But it’s still probably referenced in any article written about the city, except now they would say “abandoned steel.”

Orlando doesn’t get it. We don’t have cuisine. We have Darden Restaurants and McDonald’s.

Yeah, but you get Disney World and Mickey Mouse operation jokes. Well, and a relative lack of pro sports (outside the NBA).

by Cormican on Jul 6, 2010 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Too bad it was in print, so they couldn’t play the Rocky music in the background with a Liberty Bell off to the right and a guy getting shot off to the left.

Hey, that’s this blogs old logo.

by Cormican on Jul 6, 2010 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Except for the guy getting shot part, but yeah it’s close.

by taco pal on Jul 6, 2010 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

So are those Twins prospects any good or is Minnesota just cheap and dumb?

by j reed on Jul 6, 2010 6:48 PM EDT reply actions

Per Sickels, the #1 and #4 prospects in the Twins system. Since Sickels is a huge Twins fan, I’ll take his word, as he knows most prospects very well, but probably has an even more in depth feel for the Twins guys (though that may also cause some rose colored glasses, I suppose).

Hicks is really far from the majors, but has a very good ceiling. Ramos is a good prospect with iffy strike zone judgement, but his defense is very well regarded.. This would be a huge price for Lee, and Jack Z will be regarded as some kind of Jedi with great skills with the Jedi mind trick.

by Cormican on Jul 6, 2010 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Then I ’m suprised the Twins made the offer.

by j reed on Jul 6, 2010 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Except that the catching prospect is something they think they won’t need anytime soon (something about a guy by the name of Mauer?) and the other guy, if low down with a decent ceiling may be something they are willing to lose if they believe Lee will get them over the playoff hump (in their case the ALDS).

by dannijd on Jul 7, 2010 1:34 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Well that splains it. I didn’t know the one guy was a catcher.

by j reed on Jul 7, 2010 1:51 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s still a lot to pay for less than 3 months of Cliff Lee.

by Cormican on Jul 7, 2010 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I did not say it was not a lot— it is, but that the primary prospect is one that (barring catastrophic injury to Joe Mauer) is very much trade bait to them.

PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT WISH CATASTROPHIC INJURY TO JOE MAUER OR ANY OTHER PLAYER— IN FACT WHEN THE TWINS ARE NOT PLAYING THE PHILLIES, I RATHER LIKE MAUER, AND ALL REPORTS ARE THAT HE IS ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS*****
