Hot Cole: Braves at Phillies Game Thread, July 6, 2010
Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies, Jul 6, 2010 7:05 PM EDT
With game time temperatures expected to be around 100 degrees, it's scorcher time!
Lefty Cole Hamels goes for the Phillies... let's hope he wears a proper undershirt. Jair Jurrjens, who has struggled with injury and ineffectiveness this season yet still owns the Phils, goes for the Braves.
Discuss the game below.

There’s a reason I only listen to radio feeds at this point.

I love that Valdez and Castro aren’t ever seen in the same lineup on the same day. Which is wise, but you can start rumors that they’re really the same guy.
The cheapest $140 million lineup ever

Dishes common in Curaçao are found in Aruba and Bonaire as well. Popular dishes include: stobá (a stew made with various ingredients such as papaya, beef or goat), Guiambo (soup made from okra and seafood), kadushi (cactus soup), sopi mondongo (intestine soup), funchi (cornmeal paste similar to fufu, ugali and polenta) and a lot of fish and other seafood. The ubiquitous side dish is fried plantain.

I thought for a long time that Cole hamels and Cliff Lee was how a pitcher was supposed to look— tall and thin— The first time I saw Halladay I thought he needed to lose weight— since then I have learned that he is how a pitcher is supposed to be built.

Did Randy Wolf ever homer? Trying to think of all the pitchers I’ve seen homer live (either at the ballpark or on TV).
Robert Person, Tommy Greene, Joe Blanton, Bobby Munoz, Jeff Juden…
You don’t have to be fat per se, but it helps to be very large.
Steve Carlton hit a GS once, I think. I’d forgotten about Jeff Juden. Nice call.

They frequently show a trivia question on the scoreboard at CBP on who the last Phillies pitcher to hit a GS was. Juden’s one of the choices. If not for that, I probably would have forgotten all about it.
CBP scoreboard features caused me to retain some strange things, too. I will always think of Werth as a giraffe and Hamels as a Liger.

As far as I know in HS don’t future mlb pitchers hit plenty of hrs since they’re just better athletes? Do they lose that HR ability due to not focusing on it as much once they reach the minors and focus solely on pitching development

Apparently not… Besides, it would not have helped— he is statutorily required to surrender a longball to Chipper each time the two of them face eachother… That being said… At least we would have lost in regulation instead of watching two extra innings of the dreck

Didn’t really matter if we got the run home last inning, a 1 run lead wouldn’t have held.
Even if that were the case, it would still matter, it would be the difference between a tie game and a deficit.

In the fifth game of the 2008 World Series, Pedro Feliz of the Philadelphia Phillies hit a pop-up to the right side of the infield with runners on first and second and one out, in strong rain and swirling winds at Citizens Bank Park against the Tampa Bay Rays, and the infield fly rule was not invoked. Umpiring crew chief Tim Tschida explained that “The infield fly rule requires the umpires’ judgment to determine whether or not a ball can be caught with ordinary effort, and that includes wind” and that the umpire’s determination was that in this case there was no infielder who could make the play with “ordinary effort.”1

Question:
Why can’t they just promote Domonic Brown to the major leagues already?
I’m sick of seeing these scrubs like Valdez, Castro, Dobbs, etc dominating the line-up.
If you have someone talented like Brown waiting in the wings, when do you play him? 2014, when he’s like 26?

He sucks as a hitter right now. Why not trade him away and start the young guy?

That isn’t really an ad hominem, by the way. An ad hominem would be if I said you’re wrong because you lack moral fiber or something. I’m not saying you’re wrong because you’re stupid. I’m just saying that you’re stupid and that that’s a good reason for me not to waste my time arguing the merits of this issue with you.

I’m serious (and I’m not even trying to kiss ass here) there is a certain beauty to the logicality of everything you post here. I honestly learn a lot when you spar with people. And not just about baseball, but about how to construct an argument.
You have the baseball fan equivalent of cabin fever right now.
Brown has, like, 40 at bats above Double-A. He’d hardly be an upgrade over Werth right now, whatever your preconceived notions of Werth’s “upside” or “expendability” are at this point.
If the Braves can start guys like Heyward,
why can’t the Phillies start Brown?
One of Friar's major points was that Brown is too inexperienced
to take a starting spot in the outfield. Clearly if a prospect is talented enough, some MLB teams are willing to start them, so why can’t the Phillies?
Amazingly Heyward has not even been the best rookie, let alone rookie OF to play this year, and yet he is all you hear about.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

As am I, but his numbers at home are absolutely ridiculous considering he plays half his games at Comerica. His numbers at home are better than on the road, which makes me feel like he has a chance to be legit. Maybe not this good, but certainly good enough.

The funny thing is that doing what the Braves did with Heyward means bringing Brown up next April. Heyward was just as dominant in ’09 as Brown is now, and they waited until he consolidated his growth, even though they really could have used his last year.
So really, for all the clamor to bring up our “Heyward” we are really treating him the way the Braves treated Heyward (but could we please teach Domonic to slide feet first only- we do kot need to find out if he has an Achilles Thumb)

well, this will be over quickly, was starting to get worried that the season was looking up!

Okay
So we have a lot of guys out, but there’s really no excuse for these 2-hit nightmares we are spotting all over the place.
Why is it...
…that the Braves have a shit ton of interchangeable Latino players that I can’t keep straight — Prado, Infante, Blanco — but they’re somehow all hitting like .800 off the Phillies?
And why is it that even their non-Latino players that kill us have Latino names? (Yeah, I’m looking at you, Matt Diaz, you piece of shit.)

Now would be a bad time to point out that the Braves signed Hinske after we signed Gload, and for less money and years, right?
Yes. But Gload was the best PH in baseball last year, so at the time, and even now, I would still rather have Gload. Like every bench player, it helps to get playign time.

RAJ is what the Myers-Briggs folks would call a “J”…very structured, decisive. This does not mean patient, unfortunately. His worst habit is adding unnecessary years to contracts.

Tomorrow’s matchup— handicapping the Phillies chances of a series win.

Sigh
Three futures:
1. This team continues to play middling baseball and we have no idea what happens at the end of the season – i.e. whether they make the playoffs.
2. They get some guys healthy, win the division and enter the playoffs.
3. They start to collapse and are out of it soon, at which point we can talk about becoming sellers at the trade deadline (i.e. Werth) and maybe getting some intriguing prospects back for the future.
I am okay with #2 and #3, but I can’t stand #1 and I feel like that’s the most likely scenario for the rest of the year.
I tend to think it is going to be # 1, if for no other reason than an unwillingness on the part of RAJ to give up on this year considering certain past precedents

I dunno. I don’t think it matters much. The only guy we’d sell is Werth. No reason to sell any desirable players who we have under contract in 2011, since we’d intend to be back in contention even if we collapse in 2010.
Getting prospects for Werth would be better than the compensation picks, but it might not be much better, considering the OF market and the fact that the team would only have him under contract for a couple of months.
Right
I was only imagining selling Werth. Assuming we lose him next year, which is practically a given, and that we have his replacement in Brown, I’d take prospects over picks at this point.
I don’t know. It doesn’t seem like anyone really needs a corner OF that bad. And even the prospect names being thrown around in connection with Cliff Lee haven’t been all that impressive.
Typically the deadline market is a seller’s market, but this year feels different so far.
Only teams I could see (and maybe not even there) are SF or Bos.

I don’t think San Fran at this point is going to buy. Also, as much as we have discussed Werth’s hitting difficulties costing him money in free agency, it is also causing his trade value to decline, particularly considering that his last 10 days have been pretty bad. I don’t see him bringing back a ton of value if traded.

Nah— I looked it up when the Phillies fell behind, and asked, not realizing that he had split his time between starting and the bullpen over the past two years, leading to ambiguity.

I see this game as a real failure and exposure of organizational depth. Granted, the Phillies are playing with more than a few hands behind their backs. But they have no answers.

Just watched the Mariners execute a perfect squeeze bunt to plate a run. Might be something the Phillies should start practicing.

I think we could do better in the small ball department but as we demostrated last night where not exactly capable of that type of play. Let’s work on scoring a runner from 3rd home with 0 out with a sac fly or a ground ball not to the 3rd basemen.
Lat night
That’s right, it was Castro, wasn’t it, right before he redeemed himself somewhat with the
RBI single. Just because it doesn’t work with one scrub doesn’t mean the rest of the team can’t get a bunt down. There’something called the safety squeeze which might catch a lot of teams off guard if it’s done by Werth or Francisco. Not saying it’s something to do often, but every once in a while it may help, like tonight, where they conceivably could have won 4-3 with two hits.
