Some Phillies Links for You, August 12, 2010: Utley Swings, F-Rod Swings, and the Jews Are a Swinging Bunch of People
Phillies Notes: Phillies' Utley is cleared to swing a bat
In other news, Polanco's elbow hurts, Victorino was 3 for 4 in a rehab start, and this means Dom likely goes down.
Oswalt, Phillies shut out Dodgers
Or does it? We'll await word on Ross Gload's injury today. I'm not saying Andy Tracy is all that, but he should get some consideration if Gload is out for a while.

Paul Hagen: Phillies feeling strain on left side of the bullpen
The Baltimore Orioles have placed lefthanded closer Mike Gonzalez on waivers, according to a report in the Boston Globe.

A Tribute to Larry Bowa: The Manager Who Saved the Philadelphia Phillies
Oh, Bleacher Report. You're so darn...cute.
Sure, Bowa rubbed a few players the wrong way in 2001, namely star third baseman Scott Rolen, but the majority of Larry’s players seemed to respond to him.

Sigh, don't look now, but the Braves are 7-3 in their last 10.
Purple Row: Rockies 6, Mets 2: Melvin Freaking Mora Hit a Grand Slam
Federal Baseball: Mike Stanton is a Monster, Florida Marlins 9-5 over Washington Nationals in D.C.
Now I want to see what Dom can do against Scott Olsen.

As I suspected, Reading's Tuffy Gosewisch was defeated by Bubbie Buzachero. But it's final four time. I'm predicting a Hardy-Buzachero final.

I think if you had added ‘Papa’ to the beginning of the question, it may have helped people with the Pesach reference.

Yes, you are right. This is what happens when non-Jews try to employ Jewish humor. Like the white guy at open mic night at the Apollo.
True, but if it’s Jewish Heritage Night, I’d think for most of us the Utley caption above should come from Song of Songs 1:14-16, not the caption listed.
יד אֶשְׁכֹּל הַכֹּפֶר דּוֹדִי לִי, בְּכַרְמֵי עֵין גֶּדִי. {ס} 14 My beloved is unto me as a cluster of henna in the vineyards of En-gedi. {S}
טו הִנָּךְ יָפָה רַעְיָתִי, הִנָּךְ יָפָה עֵינַיִךְ יוֹנִים. 15 Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thine eyes are as doves.
טז הִנְּךָ יָפֶה דוֹדִי אַף נָעִים, אַף-עַרְשֵׂנוּ רַעֲנָנָה. 16 Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant; also our couch is leafy.

We wait for you, Chase! Do not hurry, but do not tarry!
Raul Ibanez: since Moyer is on the DL, he is fast becoming our favorite old guy.
Rooting against a certain LW for the Tampa Bay Lightning will be impossible.

Gonzales wouldnt be a bad addition at 1.5 mill for this year but no way in hell do you pay him 6 mill next year. So I doubt we put in a claim
Taco
to your knowledge has Raul, Fransisco or Werth (I’m sure he could afterall he is the emergency catcher) ever played 1B?
Ibanez played 119 innings in 1998 at first, 140 in 1999, 11 in 2000, 63.2 in 2001, 406 in 2002, 167 in 2003, 78 in 2004, 34 in 2005, and none since.
I dunno WL, I’m bankin on Stoneseipher to take it home

I thought this comment on Amazin Avenue was amusing, as was the doctored pic in the main post.
saturday vs. mets
So it appears that Jerry Manuel, in his infinite wisdom, has decided to keep Hisanori Takahashi in the bullpen permanently, so he will not be starting against us on Saturday. Which makes perfect sense, seeing as how Takahashi shut us out last time he faced us and has the lowest SIERA of any starter on the team.
Instead, we’ll be getting Pat Misch, Raul Valdes, or possibly even Oliver Perez. Thanks Jerry!
I think we definitely win the “who’s the better Manuel” argument. Cholly’s no great shakes as a tactical manager, but Jerry’s a moron. I hope he stays in Queens forEVER!

It could be a Halladay vs. Perez matchup that night. I would almost consider shuffling the rotation if that happened – it just seems wasteful to use Halladay in that situation.
Are you really worried about Ollie Perez? Perez is like Adam Eaton with even less control.

I’m convinced that if she only met me, Megan Fox would sleep with me.
That doesn’t make it so

a pitcher with no control is very effective against a lineup with poor plate discipline.
Just saying….stranger crap has happened.
Of course, anything can happen. I woudn’t put money on it, though.
The Phils struggle against guys with Ubaldo-like effective wildness, not miss-the-strikezone-by-twenty-feet guys like Perez. I was at a Phils game a few years ago where he walked in 3 runs.

I’m really superstitious, and I know it’s totally nuts, but it’s how I was raised. (PA Dutch still believe in the evil eye, hence the hex signs)
Even I’m not worried about Ollie. He sucks.

With the number of crap pitchers they have made look brilliant this season, I am a firm believer in jinxes.
That’s more of a commentary on you than on reality
by SportingFanaticism on Aug 12, 2010 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah. It’s almost hard to believe how bad he is.
By way of comparison, when Eaton was here, he posted an xFIP in the 5.3’s or so, over two seasons when offense was much more prevalent throughout MLB than it is now, and in a more hitter-friendly park than Citi Field. And yet, Perez’s xFIP over the past two seasons has been almost a full point higher than Eaton’s in 2007-2008.
And if memory serves, we were ok against Ubaldo this year (how many innings did it take for him to turn into a pumpkin)?
So wait, i want to make sure i wasn’t drunk yesterday.

Fangraphs
Nice article posted. Just like strikeouts by a batter can be overrated in a negative way, strikeouts for a pitcher can be overrated positively (meaning people think they are worth more than they are). Very nice read and recommended if you glossed over it. Thanks for the link.
Is there a point to linking B/R other than to laugh at it?

By linking to bleacher report you do a disservice to all the blogs actually worth reading. Bad enough that philly.com went and affiliated it self with bleacher report.

Bleacher report actually does me a service— it provides me with all of the columns from ESPN, etc. that are worth reading. Plus some of their stuff is interesting.

Matt Gelb just tweeted “Victorino activated. Bastardo optioned. Gload day to day.”
In Phillies’ speak, that means two weeks. Wow, Bastardo was bad, but he wasn’t given much rope, huh?
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
So Brad Lidge gets 80+ innings, but Bastardo only gets one? I think he should at least get a handful. This is an aspect of the Phillies I don’t like. They do not handle rookies very well. Always has to be a “proven veteran,” even if he’s proven to suck.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
Oh, I don’t think they’re so bad as that. Or put it this way – there are many other organizations who are worse. The Phillies may drag their feet a bit with young players, but they rarely deprive them of a shot altogether.
I would certainly concede that 1 G was not enough of a shot for Bastardo. But he’ll be back.
What about Mathieson, then? How they treated Happ all that time before he was allowed to stay up? Perhaps it’s more Charlie and how he seems reluctant to use the newbies.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
I think Mathieson will be back too. Happ is actually precisely who I was thinking of when I wrote my last comment. They clearly weren’t enthusiastic about him as a prospect and it took them a long time to do it, but they ultimately did give him a shot, it was a fair shot, and they acknowledged his success.
