Some Phillies Links for You, August 12, 2010: Utley Swings, F-Rod Swings, and the Jews Are a Swinging Bunch of People

Phillies Notes: Phillies' Utley is cleared to swing a bat
In other news, Polanco's elbow hurts, Victorino was 3 for 4 in a rehab start, and this means Dom likely goes down.

Oswalt, Phillies shut out Dodgers
Or does it? We'll await word on Ross Gload's injury today. I'm not saying Andy Tracy is all that, but he should get some consideration if Gload is out for a while.

True, but if it’s Jewish Heritage Night, I’d think for most of us the Utley caption above should come from Song of Songs 1:14-16, not the caption listed.

יד אֶשְׁכֹּל הַכֹּפֶר דּוֹדִי לִי, בְּכַרְמֵי עֵין גֶּדִי. {ס} 14 My beloved is unto me as a cluster of henna in the vineyards of En-gedi. {S}

טז הִנְּךָ יָפֶה דוֹדִי אַף נָעִים, אַף-עַרְשֵׂנוּ רַעֲנָנָה. 16 Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant; also our couch is leafy.

Gonzales wouldnt be a bad addition at 1.5 mill for this year but no way in hell do you pay him 6 mill next year. So I doubt we put in a claim

by PSUcup1 on Aug 12, 2010 10:09 AM EDT reply actions

Let’s assume for a second that Gonzales clears waivers (or the Phillies put in a claim so they can work out a deal – applicable only if the O’s don’t just dump the whole contract on us). How much of next year’s tab would the O’s have to pay to get people here to sign off on the deal?

by Bilzo on Aug 12, 2010 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Ibanez played 119 innings in 1998 at first, 140 in 1999, 11 in 2000, 63.2 in 2001, 406 in 2002, 167 in 2003, 78 in 2004, 34 in 2005, and none since.

by Bilzo on Aug 12, 2010 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

which while this all looks nice that he has experience there, his fielding ratings are awful as a #3. Rtot/yr at position by year:
1998:1
1999:-4
2000:-65
2001:-19
2002:-7
2003: -31
2004:-17

For comparison, Howard’s values range from -3 to 8 (with outlier of +30 in his rookie half season)

saturday vs. mets

So it appears that Jerry Manuel, in his infinite wisdom, has decided to keep Hisanori Takahashi in the bullpen permanently, so he will not be starting against us on Saturday. Which makes perfect sense, seeing as how Takahashi shut us out last time he faced us and has the lowest SIERA of any starter on the team.

Instead, we’ll be getting Pat Misch, Raul Valdes, or possibly even Oliver Perez. Thanks Jerry!

by taco pal on Aug 12, 2010 10:32 AM EDT reply actions

Didn’t he also pitch a couple of shut down innings out of the pen last Sunday— I was actually looking forward to seeing him less than Pelfrey and Dickey— at least they have hit both of them this season.

Yeah. It’s almost hard to believe how bad he is.

By way of comparison, when Eaton was here, he posted an xFIP in the 5.3’s or so, over two seasons when offense was much more prevalent throughout MLB than it is now, and in a more hitter-friendly park than Citi Field. And yet, Perez’s xFIP over the past two seasons has been almost a full point higher than Eaton’s in 2007-2008.

Nice article posted. Just like strikeouts by a batter can be overrated in a negative way, strikeouts for a pitcher can be overrated positively (meaning people think they are worth more than they are). Very nice read and recommended if you glossed over it. Thanks for the link.

by Bilzo on Aug 12, 2010 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

So Brad Lidge gets 80+ innings, but Bastardo only gets one? I think he should at least get a handful. This is an aspect of the Phillies I don’t like. They do not handle rookies very well. Always has to be a “proven veteran,” even if he’s proven to suck.

Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.

by doubleh on Aug 12, 2010 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, I don’t think they’re so bad as that. Or put it this way – there are many other organizations who are worse. The Phillies may drag their feet a bit with young players, but they rarely deprive them of a shot altogether.

I would certainly concede that 1 G was not enough of a shot for Bastardo. But he’ll be back.

by taco pal on Aug 12, 2010 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

What about Mathieson, then? How they treated Happ all that time before he was allowed to stay up? Perhaps it’s more Charlie and how he seems reluctant to use the newbies.

by doubleh on Aug 12, 2010 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Mathieson will be back too. Happ is actually precisely who I was thinking of when I wrote my last comment. They clearly weren’t enthusiastic about him as a prospect and it took them a long time to do it, but they ultimately did give him a shot, it was a fair shot, and they acknowledged his success.
