Rollins, Blanton do their share as Phillies beat Giants
Blanton limited the Giants to two solo home runs, pitching into the seventh inning. In 61/3 innings, Blanton scattered eight hits while striking out seven and walking none.
The strikeout and walk numbers are very encouraging, the two solo bombs not so much.

On a similar note, my heart was warmed by the little high-five/low-five routine that Brown and Werth did in the dugout after Brown’s homer. Werth is well aware that Brown is his likely replacement. It’s not that I expected Werth to be cold towards him or anything, but it was still a nice thing to see.
Everyone appears to be really, really awesome to Brown. Behind the scenes, who knows, but it looks like they’ve truly embraced him.

Incidentally, another thing I really love about this time is its “unity through racial diversity”. It’s awesome. It’s starting to show up in the fan base as well.
winning makes a lot of that stuff less likely, doesn’t it?
We all make fun of Wagner (and I get that wasn’t a multiracial thing) but it’s hard to believe the that had the Phils made the post-season in his presence that he would’ve complained about the locker room, the ballpark, playing in philly, etc…
Winning teams don’t have this problem very often.
Agreed… I took it as a sign that Jayson is in the moment… this year, this team.. He’ll sort out next year when it comes, which is what you’d hope for/expect…
Love how it seems Dom fits right in though… it’s like he’s been here for years, the way they act.

It’s a relatively experienced, grizzled team. Not a lot of new blood year to year. Maybe it’s the novelty. And by all accounts Brown has been humble, respectful, etc., which I’m sure the vets on the team love.

This is exactly what we were lead to believe we’d be getting with Brown. A very mature young man. I was at his first game and at the game with his first home run. He played very hard the first game, and he RAN that first home run out. He knew the Phils were down, and the HR meant nothing at the time. He just ran it out like they used to.
I can’t see why Werth would be cold to Brown…Brown is his replacement because Werth is too expensive for the Phillies to keep. Not like the team wouldn’t take him back if they could.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
No it wasn’t. It was a snide comment that had no point whatsoever.
You brought up the possibility that Werth could be cold to Brown simply because Brown is his replacement. You may not have expected Werth to be cold to Brown but you brought up that possibility. I was simply wondering why Werth would be cold to Brown based on the circumstances, and instead of responding with something that added to the conversation, or not responding at all you decided to make a comment that was baseless and factually incorrect.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

Tap dance as much as you like, but the second statement would only be made by someone who did not exercise adequate reading comprehension.
If you want to partially piece things together to suit your own needs then so be it. But you made the statement above…
“it’s not that you expected it”
Which is great and all, and I didn’t expect it either. But if you didn’t think it was a possibility then you would have never brought it up to begin with. You may not have expected Werth to be cold to Brown but you clearly thought he could have been and that is what I was commenting on.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

The reason why I made that statement was that (1) I wanted to say how much I enjoyed seeing Werth’s reaction to Brown’s home run, while at the same time (2) preemptively dispelling any potential misinterpretation of the first part of my comment as indicating that I had expected Werth to do the opposite. The fact that Werth’s reaction may not have been surprising does not suggest that it was improper to enjoy seeing it, nor does it suggest that the degree of happiness in his reaction was not noteworthy.
If I had only said “Wasn’t it great to see Werth’s reaction” and left it at that, it might have been reasonable for someone to react with “Why would you have expected him to be unhappy?” However, because I specifically stated, for the express purpose of preventing anyone from arriving at such a misconception, that I had not expected him to be unhappy, it was unreasonable for someone to react with that very misconception.
And that is my problem with it. It was snide and instigatory. If TP has simply responded initially with what he did above then I would have had nothing else to say because overall I agree with his initial statement regarding the lovefest between Werth and Brown. It was the way the response was made that took issue with. Simple as that.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

by Screen Name 20 on Aug 19, 2010 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Perhaps, but that would not have made sense, as the entire genesis of this dispute is that he believed himself not to be agreeing.
Wrong again, I wasn’t disagreeing with the basis of your comment, in fact, I was not disagreeing with anything that you said in your initial post, all I was doing was making a comment that I didn’t see why Werth would be cold towards Brown. I didn’t question you, I was simply making a comment and you responded with something that was inappropriate. And to comment on your above statement, there is never an appropriate time to be purposefully instigatory or snide to people, there is no reason to be rude and disrespectful to people, ever.

John Smallwood on Polanco…
“I don’t want to talk about it,” Polanco said of being the top National League hitter.
Is he being literal here? Does he honestly believe Polanco would be “the top National League hitter” if he leads the NL in batting average?
Later on, he quotes Charlie…
“Of course, it’s a big deal,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said of winning a batting title. “It means you are the best hitter in the league. That’s big.”
How about Charlie — is he saying this literally? I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say no, he doesn’t really believe Polanco is a better hitter than Albert Pujols (in any year or any universe); rather, he’s taking an opportunity to give some love to a steady, productive, professional hitter.
But as for Smallwood, I’m not so sure. It’s possible, if we were to also give him the benefit of the doubt, that when he says “top NL hitter”, he’s using it as a stand-in for “NL hitter with the highest batting average”. But even so, it’s misleading to all the casual fans reading that, who are going to go to work and be ridiculed when they start blathering on about the best hitter in the NL.
It perpetuates the stranglehold that batting average has. The Sunday Inquirer lists all qualifying hitters and sorts them by batting average, and while I wish they used something more advanced (I’ll take OPS as it’s gained in popularity), I am willing to overlook that. But what gets me is they also show the team hittings stats, and they rank the TEAMS by batting average, instead of by Runs, which is the only real goal for any offense.
/gets off soapbox
I think both guys are using the word “hitter” the same way prospect analysts talk about the “hit tool.” They’re not saying Polanco’s the best offensive player in the league, just that he’s the best at getting hits.
A May start without walks? Am I taking crazy pills?

This deal seems very similar to the Mark Texeira rental, however Tex is a better player than Derek Lee. Hopefully it works out the same way it did for the Braves the year they had Tex!
No, because the Braves gave up highly ranked prospects Neftali Feliz and Elvis Andrus (among others) for Teixeira. And like you said, Teixeira is a MUCH better player than Lee.

Thanks.
I still think MLB needs to tweak their schedules more – the ‘obvious’ contenders in a division should be schedule mroe near the end of the season, though it don’t always work out cause most people thought the NL West would hve the dodgers and rockies, but the NL East people thought it was going to be phillies, mets, braves.
If they had 9 or so games against each other in the last 2 months, it would make any potential races more interesting.
Maybe just me
by SportingFanaticism on Aug 19, 2010 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions
actually it’s 6 series
9 games against the mets, 9 games against the braves
by SportingFanaticism on Aug 19, 2010 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions
The point is that one team will have a homefield advantage in each matchup. Obviously that will be offset by a homefield advantage for the other team in the early season games, but there’s a difference in “leverage”.
The fact that there are teams involved doesn’t really help matters unless all three teams end up in the race. For instance, if the capitalized teams had September home field advantages:
PHILLIES vs. Mets
BRAVES vs. Phillies
METS vs. Braves
Then we would probably be upset about this and rightfully so. Games vs. the Braves are twice as important as games vs. the Mets this year.
How in the world are the schedule makers supposed to figure out who the contenders are? Would anyone have guessed the Padres or Reds would lead their division?

AL East you could have predicted the top 3
NL East
NL Cnetrl could have had the cardinals and a random team

I disliked Maddux very much. I didn’t despise him until they were interviewing about some pitcher getting hit hard by a comeback liner and he said (possibly paraphrased):
“I don’t worry about it. If you don’t make bad pitches, it’s really not an issue.”
From that point on, I wanted somebody to take a “good” pitch and give him a concussion with it.
Something slightly more compassionate? You can make a ‘good’ pitch and if someone hits it the right way, it’s coming at your head.

I guess. But I think that if a pitcher starts worrying about being brained by a comebacker he can no longer be effective. And since he can’t really control it, he has to convince himself he can.
It depends on the question that was asked. If he was asked whether he worries about getting hit while on the mound, his answer is reasonable. If he was asked how he felt about X pitcher getting hit, then his answer does kind of sound like “well F him, he should have made a better pitch.”
Well the implied comment is that ‘guys who get hit in the head just aren’t good enough pitchers’ seems a little snide to me. At least it’s just how I read it. There’s a way to say, yeah i worry about it less but it still sucks without coming off like a “im better than everyone else and that’s why i don’t worry about it” prick.

yep…that’s why it ticked me off. He basically said
“I’m too good of a pitcher to have that happen to me”.
The answer I would’ve thought more ‘compassionate’ would have been, “it’s a recognized hazard of pitching, but you can’t think about it, and I’d like to think that if I make good enough pitches, it’s extremely unlikely to occur”.
I wouldn’t mind if he turns out to be a bit of a bust. Or at least one of the rookies in the NL East this year do.

Whoops. Though, given the ridiculous number of great rookies in the NL East, that’s not a huge risk. There’s practically two per team.
Moylan, Heyward, Stanton, Storen, Venters, Sanchez, Davis, Niese, Strasburg.

Wait, I listed Moylan? Listening to the Braves broadcast while typing, I guess I just wrote down the name after hearing it.

Maybe you meant Minor?
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

I’m going for sure.

So if he goes there to rehab, what number will he play with?

So I have a friend at CBP right now and he is watching BP and reported that Dom Brown just hit a ball just under the McDonalds(RF)sign in the second deck that hit the top step of the row.

So I noticed that at Talking Chop they had over 2000 game day comments today…that seems like an awful lot considering it was A. a day game and B. they seem to get pretty crappy attendance at their games, so I would have assumed, apparently wrongfully that they would have equally poor response on the interweb.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
From today’s AP game summary: “The series attracted the two smallest crowds of the season at Turner Field. Thursday’s total of 15,593 set a new season low, following 16,911 on Tuesday.”
And that amazes me…Braves tickets are affordable, sure their stadium stinks but it’s a good team. I just can’t fathom how you can have that few people at a game for a first place team. You would think it was the Rays or something. Which BTW they have actually been doing pretty good attendance wise as of late. Which I personally am happy to see. Enjoy it now because they are going to lose some key pieces this off season.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

Their “fan base,” as it were, is disproportionately (in comparison to those of other teams) comprised of people who do not live in Atlanta and became fans only because all Braves games used to be nationally broadcast on TBS for a while. So those people do not go to games but do surf the web.
Also, there are fewer Braves blogs out there than Phillies blogs, so the few blogs they have each have a larger percentage of their total online fan base. The Phillies’ online fan base gets split up between many blogs, each of which serves a particular niche.
On Wednesday, August 4, while visiting family in Colorado Springs, I went to a day game at Coors Field (which is very, very nice). Attendance was more than 37,000; the Rock Pile was full and rowdy. Jimenez was pitching against the Giants, and the Rockies were looking to make a move in the division and for the wild card.
Maybe I don’t expect 37,000 to see the Nationals on a Thursday afternoon at Turner Field, but sub-16,000 is pathetic. It’s Expos territory.
What’s the mid day weather like in Atlanta this time of year
Hot as ballz is the phrase that comes to my mind

Rec’d for truth. Have been to a game there. It gets hotter as the evening progresses, too.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
Dodgers had a game there at 7 PM (eastern) last week and the radio guys were talking about how it was like over 100 degrees with the humidity. So i figure mid day it sucks a lot worse

“Paid Attendance”, i.e. bought tix rather than turnstile counts.

Well yes I do know the difference, I just wasn’t sure which one the game summary used. I am sure it was much lower than that, at least that’s what it looks like on the TV.

5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
It was like when i went to Oswalt’s first start in DC, they announced the attendance at 39 and change, calling it a sellout, but that was nonsense, since there were entire sections that were empty all game.
by WanderingMoses on Aug 19, 2010 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions
They get more attendance in the comment boxes than they do at the game.
The Braves have a lot of blue seats that masquerade as fans these days.
