Swept! Astros 5, Phillies 1
Against the team with the 12th best ERA in the NL, the Phillies managed 7 runs in 4 games. What's that equal? A sweep.

It seems that the Dodgers recently reshuffled their rotation. We are now going to face Clayton Kershaw. It had previously appeared that we wouldn’t have to.
All that space in the outfiled, the greater the gaps to smack all those line drives and fliners into. Yay.. Should have packaged his ass with a fringy prospect around the trade dead line when the getting was probably at it’s highest. Maybe Robertson will be ready or some of the rooks will be here to bail him out if he should things get wonky.
Question for the stat people out there...
I am looking for a site that has career splits for a pitcher versus the players on a given team, preferably one that would let me see a given pitcher v. a given team for easier reference. Does anybody know of a website out there that has the info?
Thanks in Advance
baseball-reference ought to have what you’re seeking.

Completely inept and downright embarrassing. The offense ought to be absolutely ashamed of themselves. Again.
Agreed. Perhaps they will atone for their malfeasance on this road trip.

Here’s a possibly ludicrous and insane idea…how about bumping Rollins out of the leadoff spot and sticking Werth in there for a few games? Rollins has the second worst OBP on the team, while Werth has the best. Sure, Jayson’s a slugger, but I’d love to see statistics on the winning percentage when the leadoff man hits a homer. And no one is on base to start the game, so no problem with hitting in risp! Of course, the few tiny kinks you’d have to work out are the strikeouts and terrible base running.
On second thought…
For the series...
Rollins 3 for 20, 1 BB
Polanco 3 for 15, 2 BB
Victorino 3 for 15, 4 BB
Utley 4 for 16, 4 BB, 4K, 0 RBI
Howard 1 for 16, 0 BB, 10K, 0 RBI
Werth 6 for 19, 0 BB, 7K, 2 RBI
Ibanez 6 for 14, 2 BB, 2K, 0 RBI
Your primary tablesetters were 9 for 50 and only on-base 15 times total in 56 plate appearances. Even though Werth and Ibanez hit for a decent average during the series, the primary run producers had a grand total of 2 RBI for an entire 4-game series. That’s pretty awful.
Agrees. I hate to say it (because I know he is playing hurt), but Howard seemed to be a big part of this problem, striking out as the third out in a number of innings. I know it is a small sample size, but if it does not change soon, dropping him in the order may become a better idea- that way he is still getting the at bats that he needs to get all the way over this injury without being such a black hole in the middle of the lineup.

The catcher position was a combined 2 for 16, so there wasn’t any help coming from the secondary run producers either.
Brian Schneider hasn’t had a hit in his last 5 games and is sporting a career-worst .208 BA. I really hope that, once the off days hit, Chooch can catch almost every single game.
1 of the runs scored came out of the catcher position, though. (Ruiz homered on Monday), this makes me a little less critical of the position, although more offense from the bottom of the order will always be welcome.

The “awful” comment was directed toward the entire lineup, not just the run producers, but congrats on taking another comment out of context in an attempt to disparage someone clearly not on the same plane of baseball nirvana as you.
Jimmy, Shane, and Polly were on base 14 times (not including Rollins’ HR on Tuesday). Polanco and Victorino didn’t score a single run the entire series, and Rollins only scored twice outside of his HR. Even when the table was set, the run producers didn’t take advantage of the situation. So yeah, I’d say that they did not get the job done.
even though
they would strike out in t ball right now, im surprised they didn’t appeal two games..the 1st base thing & the howard getting tossed by a asshole ump that was baiting howard.
what’s the point? when was the last time an appeal of a game resulted in anything?

I really thought we were out of this slump we had about a month ago. Hopefully this is just a short slump before the last month of the season when the hitters get hot. One can only hope.
They were out of it for a while. Hopefully this was just a minor down period akin to the one the team had at the end of April. Chase and Ryan are in the process of getting it together (particularly Chase)… Hopefully, this is just a brief little hump in the road similar to the one they went through for 7 games in late April and early May.

I think it was a perfect storm: bats cooling off for some, Utley/Howard still trying to get timing/swings back, good pitching/hot team, left-handers who throw off-speed stuff, Captain Underpants and the Bourn Ultimatum…throw in some shitty umpiring…and you’ve got yourselves a 4 game sweep. The pitching is still good and carrying the club, which is a good sign in the bad offensive times.
They will not continue to only score 2 runs for the next month+. And any of you lurking baffoons who call up WIP wanting to replace Utley and Howard with Valdez/Sweeney/Gload, STFU. The Phillies aren’t winning anything this season if Utley/Howard don’t play like Utley/Howard so there’s really no point in bringing it up. They can’t get their swings back if they don’t play a lot, so you see the catch 22?

Baseball Reference has posted a weirdly brief article (with somewhat predictable backlash) and Fangraphs is jumping on the Phillies in trouble train as well. I get the statistical predictors and all, and that’s fine, but the tendency to jump on strikes me as a little premature. Maybe a Dewey Defeats Truman kind of moment in the end.
I’m sorry – that BR blog post is insane. 3 game deficit in late August being hard to overcome? That’s just absurd. There’s a ton of baseball left, and 3 games is pretty negligible. Of course, I’d rather be on the other side of it, but this isn’t insurmountable at all.

whether it’s jumping on or not, the Phils have developed a unique brand of suck this year with long stretches of incredible ineptitude at the plate spiced with bizarre mental breakdowns on the paths while still managing to log a respectable record.
Should I be encouraged that this is their version of a post-WS-loss funk?
I think we will win any short series in October because of our pitching; I just hope we can get there

Not only does it feel premature all things considered, but it feels like these people did not look both ways before they crossed the Phillies off their list, instead choosing to forget that 1) The Phillies get six head to head with Atlanta at the end of the season, by which point Chase and Ryan should look like Chase and Ryan and 2) None of the main wild card contenders have played well- the Cardinals have dropped 3 of four to the Pirates and Nationals, and San Francisco, like Philadelphia has only won four of their last ten. Even Atlanta has lost half of their last ten games. Granted, the Phillies let a chance to get ahead get away from them, and a West Coast swing could mess them up farther…. but that card has not been played yet. They are 3 games out of the East and 1/2 game out of the Wild Card- this hardly seems like a time to write the obituary to me.
