Ha…that Talking Chop link references The Foul…

Umpire Bob Davidson won the game for Philly tonight, as he called the game-winning hit from Gabby Sanchez foul. It was pretty darn obvious. Check ESPN at your own risk, because you’ll probably get mad. Really mad. The Fish ended up not scoring, and the Phillies won it in the 10th. Thanks, Bob. Now they have a month of mostly home games, at the end of which their lineup may just be whole again. (Base Ba’al Be Praised!)

by Wet Luzinski on Aug 6, 2010 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions

that call was so close I don’t think you can complain. What annoys me is that everyone points to the fact that it was fair after the bag, but that ball definitely took one odd hop, and I think it bounced foul before 3rd.

It was foul right outside the batters box, hooked and bounced just inside the line at 3rd, then bounced foul again about 10 feet further down the line.

The MLB Network analysts were not much better. Nor were the ESPN analysts.

Now, I actually do think that ball was fair. But the reasoning these guys were using was just so obviously, ridiculously wrong. WHERE A GROUND BALL LANDS AFTER IT GOES PAST THE BAG DOESN’T MATTER!!! WHAT MATTERS IS WHERE IT WAS WHEN IT CROSSES THE BAG!!! ARGH!!!

by taco pal on Aug 6, 2010 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed TP. I think the ball was fair too, but the Marlins’ announcers biggest reaction of outrage came when the replay showed the ball hitting fair AFTER THE BAG. That’s just idiotic.

by David S. Cohen on Aug 6, 2010 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. And they were all like, “How can Davidson make that call – he’s not even watching where the ball lands?!?!?” But WHERE THE BALL LANDS IS NOT THE QUESTION!!!! I’m not going to say it’s irrelevant, since I guess you can interpolate from it, but there’s no reason why Davidson should necessarily feel obligated to continue to follow a ground ball after it crosses the bag.

by taco pal on Aug 6, 2010 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

The only way you could have conclusive evidence that that ball was fair is with an overhead camera.

I was contemplating typing out the same thing but figured it would take too long on this damn phone.

Later in the 9th, the Fish announcers finally noted that it didn’t matter where the ball landed after the bag, but they did so as an afterthought.

by PhillyFriar on Aug 6, 2010 10:11 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

It’s rare that you hear two high-voice guys announce a game (in any sport) together. Usually, at least one guy has to be a deep-voice guy. I think this might be one reason why Wheels is paired with T-Mac rather than Franzke.

I suppose Andy Musser and Whitey were both high-voice guys though, and they worked together frequently.

Anyway, regardless of the pitch of their voices, the Marlins broadcasters suck.

by taco pal on Aug 6, 2010 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think of Whitey as an overly high-pitched announcer, but I guess you could pair Isaac Hayes with Harry and he’d sound like a choir boy.

I miss Andy Musser, too.

by PSUFlyers on Aug 6, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

After watching replays, Davidson insisted he made the correct call.

“I was right on top of it, and it was wide of the bag,” he said. “What the ball did when it went past me is irrelevant. … I understand that’s the winning run, but in my opinion it was foul.”

Baseball rules state that a ball is foul if it “bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory.” Davidson said the ball past third base in foul territory and it didn’t matter where it landed.

by Clyde Simmons on Aug 6, 2010 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh, and I have another pet peeve. When did the word “accountability” become such an idiotic buzzword? I’m all for the concept, but people have suddenly started to use it left and right in all sorts of inapt situations.

On MLB Network, some nitwit (I think it was Sean Casey) just kept going on and on and on and on and on and on about how “Davidson made a mistake, but just be accountable, Bob, don’t insist you were right.” THAT’S NOT WHAT “ACCOUNTABLE” MEANS, IDIOT!

by j reed on Aug 6, 2010 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I do understand that the ball probably crossed the bag if it touched the foul line before the bag and then landed in fair territory after the bag. But you cannot say this conclusively. As we all know, baseballs do curve. It is possible that it curved around the bag. If there had been instant replay on that play, I don’t think the evidence would have been enough to overturn the call. It is strongly suggestive, but not conclusive.

by taco pal on Aug 6, 2010 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. The camera angle wasn’t good enough. Davidson’s spot on the field was much better. Now, of course, he didn’t have instant replay and had to make a split second decision, but there’s no way to say from the camera angle that the ball didn’t curve around the bag. It was clearly doing something funny on that play to have bounced where it did.

by David S. Cohen on Aug 6, 2010 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

my understanding of the fair/foul rule has always been as follows….
1) For a ball that has never touched the ground (and passes the base), fair/foul is determined by where it ultimately lands.
2) For a ball that does touch the ground prior to passing the base, a ball is foul if it passes the base in foul territory or comes to rest in foul territory, and is fair if it passes the base in fair territory, touches the base, or hops directly over the base (or any portion thereof) or comes to rest in fair territory.
3) A batted ball that richochets off the pitchers mound into foul territory is fair regardless of whether or not any fielder touches it before it enters foul territory.

by Bilzo on Aug 6, 2010 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I had a ‘rule-book-in-pictures’ as a kid, and I clearly remember one drawing of a ball doing a crazy four hop thing where it went fair-fair-foul-fair (and passed inside the bag) with a giant “FAIR BALL” written to the side.

by Bilzo on Aug 6, 2010 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

This is my understanding as well.

by taco pal on Aug 6, 2010 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Blizo – I didn’t know about number 3. Is that for any part of the pitchers’ mound? Fascinating! Thanks for teaching me something today!

by David S. Cohen on Aug 6, 2010 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah…it also applies to rocks or other weirdness, but the premise is that if you draw a line from first to third base, any ball that gets that far on the ground is considered fair, regardless of whatever it does afterwards

by Bilzo on Aug 6, 2010 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

sorry…I mistranslated…I meant the pitcher’s rubber (I was equating mound to rubber…but I realize they are in fact not actually the same thing).

by Bilzo on Aug 6, 2010 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

That makes more sense to me. Thanks for the clarification.

by David S. Cohen on Aug 6, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that if a ball hits the pitcher’s rubber, but settles in foul territory it’s a foul ball. I think where the ball settles is determinative on an infield ball.

by Derekcarstairs on Aug 6, 2010 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you are incorrect.

by Bilzo on Aug 6, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

A ball that hits the first base bag or third base bag and then goes foul is a fair ball. I don’t think there is a special rule for the pitching rubber. If the ball hits the pitcher and goes foul, then it’s fair, of course.

by Derekcarstairs on Aug 6, 2010 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

additionally…
If a fly ball lands on or beyond first or third base, and then bounces to foul territory, it is a fair hit.

by Bilzo on Aug 6, 2010 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Stupid MLB rulebook is in a .pdf…so I’m going to write it verbatim.
Rule 2.00
“A fair ball is a batted ball that settles on fair ground between home and first base or between home and third base or that is on or over fair territory when bounding to the outfield past first or third base or that touches first, second, or third base, or that first fall on fair territory on or beyond first base or third base, or that while one or over fair territory touches the person of an umpire or player or that while over fair territory passes out of the playing field.

by Bilzo on Aug 6, 2010 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

(posted those two out of sequence, my bad)

anyway..the key phrase there is “past first or third”. The interpretation is that includes anything past the line drawn from first to third, which the pitchers rubber is past.

by Bilzo on Aug 6, 2010 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve googled it and found answers of both sorts…so maybe I am full of crap here….but that’s what i always thought, and have found answers agreeing, as well as ones that disagree.

by Bilzo on Aug 6, 2010 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

FWIW, I don’t believe the pitchers rubber is past the imaginary line between the 1B and 3B bags. The pitchers rubber is 60.5 ft away, while the imaginary line is 90 * 2^0.5 / 2 = 63.6 ft away.

by taco pal on Aug 6, 2010 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

yep…I confirm your math. The mound is 60’6", the imaginary line is 63’7½".

I am incorrect. Now…where did I hear that from….?

by Bilzo on Aug 6, 2010 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

The pitcher’s rubber is definitely not past the imaginary line between first and third.

by Derekcarstairs on Aug 6, 2010 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I also don’t think the imaginary line is relevant.

by David S. Cohen on Aug 6, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess, but I’ve never really determined how you determine what’s fair on the ceiling. Do they have to chalk the roof too? If a batter hits a ball directly up and it hits the ceiling in fair territory, then hits him before he leaves the batters box, is it foul?

by Bilzo on Aug 6, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Have any of them (TC and Fishstripes) considered

the fact that Davidson didn’t blow a two run lead in the ninth? Or that he wasn’t the one who gave up a HR to Chooch in the 10th (and nearly another to Francisco)?

It was probably a blown call. Close, but probably blown. Regardless, the Marlins have no one to blame but themselves, since they had ample chances to win the game before and afterward.

by Aphilfan on Aug 6, 2010 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

The coverage of this whole call at third has devolved into full-blown meme. Various media outlets are treated it as an obviously blown call that will need a full FBI/DOJ investigation and are making MLB out to be a big criminal for its complicity in refusing to use replay.

But as many here have already pointed out, there was nothing obvious about the call when looking at the replay! ESPN has already beaten this one into the ground, as per its specialty, per Favre, A-Rod, etc.

by WanderingMoses on Aug 6, 2010 11:00 AM EDT reply actions

is it really being beaten into the ground, or are you just watching ESPNews on a loop and noticing it every half hour?

For the last 30-45 minutes they talked about football…one cohost was marcellus wiley – they all predict the raiders will go 9-7

First Take did an ‘immediate’ first and 10 about it – was very important -sadly no skip today – the rational radio voice from ESPN LA said it wasn’t a bad call and that the ump got it right – the man who works for the WWL direct (Casillias) did his best skip imitation.

Valkyrie falls into a different genre. I understand German fluently and mostly speak it, and not much is lost in translation in German films than say, Chinese/Japanese films in my opinion. There aren’t many concepts, vocabulary, etc. in German that aren’t translatable into English, since English is itself a primarily Germanic language. I think it is different for non-Western (and to a lesser extent non-Germanic) languages. I think more is lost in translation between these languages and English. What is lost, I believe, stems from us not being German. My parents and grandparents get more out of these movies then I do, and they mean more to them. That said, I actually like foreign film over American a lot of the time.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 6, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I was mainly responding to the statement that “Zagurski HAS to be better than JC.” It’s not that I necessarily think Zagurski is clearly worse, just that I don’t think Romero is clearly worse either. In any event, it’s very difficult to compare them because Zagurski is just a very different animal – he has a reverse split.

I think Bastardo has the potential to be an absolute lights-out middle reliever. His main issue seems to be durability, but that is not a small concern. But I wasn’t really talking about him.

Ideally, I’d like to keep Romero around next year if he’ll agree to a lower salary, and also keep at least one of the other two on the roster. The benefit of having Romero is that he has a pretty high floor. He’s unlikely to s**t the bed completely against lefties. Bastardo has a much higher ceiling but also a much lower floor than Romero. Zagurski is just kinda weird. I wouldn’t want to depend on Bastardo + Zagurski as my only two lefties, even though I think they both have ability.

by taco pal on Aug 6, 2010 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Not just making a joke here, but given Wade’s enduring love for both former Phillies and overhyped middle relievers, I expect to see Romero in an Astros uni this time next year.

Romero was acquired by Gillick though.

by taco pal on Aug 6, 2010 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

He was, but the Feliz signing is in a different category than, say, Brandon Lyon. It was just a 1-year stopgap sort of contract.

Wade obviously has big problems with middle reliever contracts in general, but I don’t think there’s any reason to expect that he’d be more vulnerable than he otherwise would just because a particular reliever is an ex-Phillie, especially where he wasn’t a Wade guy.

by taco pal on Aug 6, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Why Feliz though? There were other equally meh stop gaps available. Wade spent what 25-30 years with the Phillies in various roles, he knows how the team works and may have a certain level of trust that if the Phils had the player, then he is also an Ed Wade type player. I don’t know I’m spitballing and going nuts with real life work here, so this isn’t particularly well thought out.

So for every 9 innings he’s on the mound, the other team has to let Zagurski’s team score 2.20? Or would you require the other team to take 2.20 runs off of its own run total?

I could have sworn baseball games were determined by the roll of a 20-sided die.

I always liked the four sided myself, just very cool design

Nothing short of a sweep and ending the Mets season over the next three days will be considered a success IMO.

Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

Well, then prepare to be disappointed. What is wrong with 2 of 3?

I’ll gladly take 2 of 3. But a sweep would be much better.

You know that’s a Braves blog, right?

by taco pal on Aug 6, 2010 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes I do, but since they did us no favors when they faced the Braves, I think it’s only fair that the Phillies return the favor.

The Braves and their fans will get theirs soon enough.

Phillies fans are front runners? That really annoyed me

by FearTheTurtIe on Aug 6, 2010 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure what is worse…being front runners, or seeing a Braves stadium 3/4’s empty when their first place team is facing the wild card leading Giants, with two time Cy Young award winner on the mound?

Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

Final proof that Braves fans aren't front runners

They don’t show up no matter how good the team is.

Almost every writer/talking head that ESPN interviews/uses as a commentator “likes the way the Braves are playing.” Of course. Someone also referred to the Phillies as “treading water”, since I guess gaining 6 games in the division qualifies as that.

The Braves are a trendy pick. They’re a change of pace from the Big Red Machine 2.0

P.S – Kurkijian is a fucking idiot who looks at the overall picture. Keeping in mind we’ve won 12/14 games (which, is not treading water to say the least), and half of these games have been without Howard, most without our other starters. In other words, what else can you expect from a ESPN baseball writer who looks at the overall standings and sees a 2 game lead. Because ya know, we haven’t won the NL pennant 2 years in a row, so we obviously know nothing about winning

Like national pundits of all varieties, not just in sports, Kurkjian is exceedingly lazy and makes a lot of unwarranted assumptions.

by taco pal on Aug 6, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s part laziness, part buying into the idea that being a reporter makes you into an expert on a subject.

by Cormican on Aug 6, 2010 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

i said this in anger because I just saw the Kurkijian piece and I couldn’t believe what he was saying. I think I should just stick to Baseball tonight where Krukky is a homer

What I have learned in 11 years in the sports business is that the dumbest guys in the room are always the media guys. Some do a decent job of reporting, most just spew opinions. And those opinions change more often than they brush their teeth. So what the media was saying was of zero impact or influence on what i was going to do. Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing. So I ignore them.
