The Phillies look to extend their current win streak to five games as their take on their third NL East opponent in a row, the New York Mets, in a weekend series in Philadelphia.  Hopefully the Phillies will score a run in this series.

Joe Blanton gets the ball for the Phillies, against lefty Jon Niese for the Mets.

Former Phillies closer Ricky Bottalico talking about Darin Daulton.

For the first pitch I shook off from Daren it was like three months into the season and he came up to the mound and asked "What are you doing".
 I replied "What"
He said "Do you know what your ERA is with me behind the plate?"
I said "No"
Then he said "Zero. Do you know what it is with someone else?"
I said "No"
He said "Everything else. Now you throw what I put down"

Awesome!

Those were two of the best Phillies to ever play in my lifetime (I was born a year and change after they won the World Series in 1980).

Wishing it was 2008.

If Valdez gets on, Cholly would have been forced to consider a ph for Blanton. However, based on his pattern this year I’d guess Blanton would hit. Would have been 3rd out anyway. Thus, I’m not unhappy Valdez is out…maybe Cholly will ph at the beginning of the inning.

In 2008, if the #8 hitter gets on in that situation, Blanton is hit for because our bullpen had a clear 7th-8th-9th rotation.

Charlie was thinking “big lead, low-pressure situation”. It was a good time to use Baez, but when he started to suck, going to Romero after last night’s trainwreck was just the wrong move, but you can’t argue the match up. In any case, we are outcomes-based here.

Remember the Phitans

by RememberthePhitans on Aug 6, 2010 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Hessman is a righty. Charlie has to know that Manuel is gonna pull back the lefty and put in a righty for Romero, and he has to know that Romero is utterly useless against righties.

Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 6, 2010 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry, forgot that. The initial matchup worked for Romero, but I forgot the next switch there.

Holy shit — Jerry Manuel made a smart move? Unpossible!

But what option did he have? Romero had to pitch to him.

5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!

by EREX21 on Aug 6, 2010 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

The option was not to put Romero in, knowing that the other Manuel will obviously put in a righty. If Charlie can’t anticipate that move, he’s not qualified to manage a high school team. It would also help if he had a damn clue of what his own pitchers are and are not capable of.

Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 6, 2010 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I guess he was trying to avoid having to use Lidge in what at the time was a non save situation. I don’t disagree with you that it was painfully obvious exactly what was going to happen when Romero stepped onto the field, we all knew the Mets would counter with a righty. Since we all know that having Romero IBB people backfires he opted to let him pitch to Hessman. And that didn’t seem to work either.

I actually would have rather had Baez face one more batter before pulling him.

Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

Yes.

Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 6, 2010 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Eh, ideally that means that Charlie was thinking that he wouldn’t get a good matchup anyway, so might as well make Jerry blow two bench spots.

It’s bloody stupid logic especially in a 5 run game, but hey.

I’m not totally up to date on Rules 5 regulations.

Can phils place Herndon on DL, retain his rights, and call up Bastardo to be another lefty in the pen? I think they can. Let’s face it, Herndon won’t be on postseason roster and Bastardo would help out. Romero has lost it. He’s pitching same way he was when Red Sox cut his ass.

by Pedro45 on Aug 6, 2010 10:43 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

The problem is that if they were to place Herndon on the DL for no reason, the league would be after them. The Mets got investigated when they put Ollie Perez on the DL after he refused assignment to the minor leagues. While the league wound up satisfied that there was a real issue deserving of going to the DL, it is possible and even probable that sticking Herndon there without at least some evidence of an injury would cause problems.

Meanwhile, the Nats are smoking the Dodgers 6-0, off two three run blasts by Adam Dunn, scoring Desmond and Zimmerman both times.
