Roy's In the 'Hood: Phillies at Dodgers Game Thread, September 1, 2010

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers, Sep 1, 2010 3:10 PM EDT

It's hard to understate how easy having two pitchers named "Roy" and another named "Cole" has made hacky, pun headline writing.  I should probably be slapped, but hey, you're stuck.

The Phillies kick off September with the rubber match of a their three game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers, this afternoon at Dodger Stadium.

Roy Oswalt gets the ball for the Phillies, against lefty Clayton Kershaw for the Dodgers.  The Phillies have dominated the talented Kershaw throughout his career.  Let's hope this continues.

Discuss the game below.

It’ll be helpful if there’s an injury, but otherwise I’d rather have a bench bat.

the injujries didn’t help

by j reed on Sep 1, 2010 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

injuries havent really altered the way this offense has approached hitting. however they have limited the amount of long balls hit!

by PSUcup1 on Sep 1, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

This offense is fundamentally different this year than in years past. The injuries are a huge part, as are players performing worse.

by David S. Cohen on Sep 1, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

the only thing that is different this year is the results. Injuries have played a big part of that. But the philosophy as a whole remains the same. They just have not executed it as well for a variety of reasons

by PSUcup1 on Sep 1, 2010 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

True… this is something that has been mentioned by a number of people, myself included… a lot of scoring makes it easy to miss the fact that good small ball is not being played. That being said, it is just one of a number of contributing factors to why the offense does not look as good as it used to.

For Chase and Ryan, I agree with the “need to hit your way out of it” school of thought… their problems seem to relate to finding rhythm, other than rest for Ryan’s ankle, it is probably necessary for them to keep seeing pitching. As to Raul, who has played a lot of games, a rest may be the best thing in the world for him.

Yup, was about to say...

As nasty as Kershaw looks right now, he’s showing what really makes Halladay so great. He’s at 83 pitches through 4 innings, whereas Roy #1 is customarily at about 55 pitches by now, often even less.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 1, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

You see how K’s can run up a pitch count? 8 K’s but 83 pitches (51 strikes – 61%) for Kershaw. He won’t be going deep into this game.

It is not just the k’s— he has been wild in general— I think the only short at bats were the two home runs.

by SeattlePhan on Sep 1, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

by dannijd on Sep 1, 2010 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I can see it now.
Roy goes 7 no hit innings.
Madison a clean 1-2-3 eighth.
Then Lidge walks two with two out in ninth and gives up a three run homer to Rod Barajas to lose the no-no and the game.
After game… Oswalt shoots lidge in clubhouse. Clubhouse cheers

by taco pal on Sep 1, 2010 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

1. His effort doesn’t deserve to be thought of that highly, because he hasn’t really pitched that well.

2. It would make it more likely that Charlie will pull him at a reasonable time. His pitch count is already high.

by taco pal on Sep 1, 2010 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s already going out for another inning, and it’s certain to be his last, shutout or not.

Does it really matter what his effort is thought of? It’s not like we’ll cite 6 or 7 shutout innings as the reason to make him the #1 starter in the playoffs.

by philsandthrills on Sep 1, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Sep 1, 2010 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

No your missing the point. He’s 42 and never pitched out of the pen for a full year. Would you lift weights for the same muscles on consecutive days because that’s essentially the stress your exposing the connective tissue of the arm and shoulder to. It reasonable to assume that the constant interruption of the recovery process is why relievers are so erratic year to year. Also keep in mind BT is a hard thrower. He needs to be used with caution because we don’t know how well his arm will response to the strain of a full season in the bull pen.

by j reed on Sep 1, 2010 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Like I said, key situations. So lower the number of times he is used to the biggest situations. So don’t pitch him in a 6-0 blow out, or 4-0 in the 9th inning, but a 3-2 game in the remnants of the 7th inning

by taco pal on Sep 1, 2010 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

To be honest, Madson’s IP totals are actually really low because of injury. So him getting overworked isn’t as much of a concern as we make of it.

by philsandthrills on Sep 1, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

It mitigates it to a degree, but there’s a certain point beyond which you shouldn’t be worked in the short term, regardless of how much rest you may have gotten X weeks or months ago.

But who do you pick to pitch the 8th then?

Anyone, really. I’d rather risk losing the game now than risk messing up Madson’s effectiveness down the road.

I try to stay off mine at the ball park…. although I generally have the camera attached to my wrist and hand.

Cameras are fine. You’re still watching the game through the lens.

This was the conclusion we came to but still, the dude didn’t have two friends that would have liked those seats and actually would have wanted to be there? If he didn’t, why wouldn’t he try to impart the knowledge and love of the game to his daughter(s)?

The fielder caught the ball as he was falling to get to it and his knees had the bag.

By using Lidge (overused anyway) and getting that strikeout and chin music against Barajas, Charlie just whipped his piece out and smacked Barajas in the face with it

If he has command, he can live without a fastball. Trevor Hoffman dominated without a fastball for years.

by taco pal on Sep 1, 2010 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Really I’ve never heard of Hoffman…cmon Lidge is not exactly the maven of control and location that Hoffman was. Re-inventing yourself, while possible, doesn’t inspire confidence in the midst of a pennant race.

by j reed on Sep 1, 2010 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I wasn’t being smart or anything, I was serious. Hoffman wasn’t always the maven of control and location that Hoffman was either. He was a hard thrower once, who evolved.

In fact, even the later Hoffman wasn’t that great of a control pitcher. What he had was one of the greatest trick pitches in the sport – just like Lidge does. Lidge needs good command, but it doesn’t have to be otherworldly.

by taco pal on Sep 1, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

The issue is not that he can’t evolve, it’s evolving during a pennant race. That’s alot of uncertainity esp. if the Braves continue with these come or behind wins.

by j reed on Sep 1, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Sitting 90-91. I know he’s been good lately, but he’s scary right now.

by SethC on Sep 1, 2010 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

again your view about BL is based on 2008 which was extreme/ historic

3 out of every 2 people cant do math

by VAwxman on Sep 1, 2010 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

My view on BL is that he’s a pitcher who succeeds in large part by throwing hard. If he’s managed to change into a different guy on the fly, great, but it’s a bit nerve-wracking.

by SethC on Sep 1, 2010 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

And 2008 wasn’t even that extreme except for a fluky-low HR/FB and the meaningless save statistic. He was good, of course, but his 2004 was way better… 94.2 innings!! 157 strikeouts!!

by SethC on Sep 1, 2010 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions
