Roy's In the 'Hood: Phillies at Dodgers Game Thread, September 1, 2010
Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers, Sep 1, 2010 3:10 PM EDT
It's hard to understate how easy having two pitchers named "Roy" and another named "Cole" has made hacky, pun headline writing. I should probably be slapped, but hey, you're stuck.
The Phillies kick off September with the rubber match of a their three game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers, this afternoon at Dodger Stadium.
Roy Oswalt gets the ball for the Phillies, against lefty Clayton Kershaw for the Dodgers. The Phillies have dominated the talented Kershaw throughout his career. Let's hope this continues.
Discuss the game below.

Apparently Paul Hoover will be the first call-up for the Phils today. I now need to go restrain myself from making suck jokes.
I don’t really get that…do they really need to play 3 different catchers?
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

a lot of the Phils “issues” they have had this year have in reality always been there. They were often masked by the long ball…
injuries havent really altered the way this offense has approached hitting. however they have limited the amount of long balls hit!
This offense is fundamentally different this year than in years past. The injuries are a huge part, as are players performing worse.
by David S. Cohen on Sep 1, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions
True… this is something that has been mentioned by a number of people, myself included… a lot of scoring makes it easy to miss the fact that good small ball is not being played. That being said, it is just one of a number of contributing factors to why the offense does not look as good as it used to.
Whew, raced home to catch the game, and I see a 2-0 lead with RoyO on the mound, awesome. Although I will not get to read TGP during the day this school year anymore. Boo.

radio guys basically saying that Charlie is going with “his line up” and if you are struggling you have to hit your way out of it

For Chase and Ryan, I agree with the “need to hit your way out of it” school of thought… their problems seem to relate to finding rhythm, other than rest for Ryan’s ankle, it is probably necessary for them to keep seeing pitching. As to Raul, who has played a lot of games, a rest may be the best thing in the world for him.

As nasty as Kershaw looks right now, he’s showing what really makes Halladay so great. He’s at 83 pitches through 4 innings, whereas Roy #1 is customarily at about 55 pitches by now, often even less.

by philsandthrills on Sep 1, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh well.
Probably best in the long run… wouldn’t want Charlie to feel hamstrung into leaving Roy in with his pitch count climbing on a hot day.
No-hitters are nice, but wins are more important, as is Oswalt.

Werth! He should’ve gotten to the ball! Dude never shows effort.
by philsandthrills on Sep 1, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions
1. His effort doesn’t deserve to be thought of that highly, because he hasn’t really pitched that well.
2. It would make it more likely that Charlie will pull him at a reasonable time. His pitch count is already high.
He’s already going out for another inning, and it’s certain to be his last, shutout or not.
Does it really matter what his effort is thought of? It’s not like we’ll cite 6 or 7 shutout innings as the reason to make him the #1 starter in the playoffs.
by philsandthrills on Sep 1, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions
We won’t. Others might.
I actively rooted for Edwin Jackson to lose his no-hitter too. It’s a shame that he didn’t.
I’d say for a bad start by this Roy, it’s about the start I’d expect from a 3rd starter on a normal day.

I imagine any saber-minded baseball fan felt the same way. Oh yeah, send a guy out with 130+ pitches for a nearing double digit walk no-hitter. What a meaningless accomplishment.
Again, unless the others can influence Charlie, it doesn’t matter.

No your missing the point. He’s 42 and never pitched out of the pen for a full year. Would you lift weights for the same muscles on consecutive days because that’s essentially the stress your exposing the connective tissue of the arm and shoulder to. It reasonable to assume that the constant interruption of the recovery process is why relievers are so erratic year to year. Also keep in mind BT is a hard thrower. He needs to be used with caution because we don’t know how well his arm will response to the strain of a full season in the bull pen.
Like I said, key situations. So lower the number of times he is used to the biggest situations. So don’t pitch him in a 6-0 blow out, or 4-0 in the 9th inning, but a 3-2 game in the remnants of the 7th inning

It mitigates it to a degree, but there’s a certain point beyond which you shouldn’t be worked in the short term, regardless of how much rest you may have gotten X weeks or months ago.
Certainly. Especially with the continuing stretch of games, and a double header.
But who do you pick to pitch the 8th then?

He sure does like to ride his best relievers during pennant races. Maybe he figures Madson’s still well-rested from all that time on the DL.
Charlie likes to ride his players period. With the exception, oddly enough, of starting pitchers and pitch counts. He’s actually pretty reasonable in that area.
Bad mental image of that first sentence. Can’t get it out of my head!

For those not watching brown started to turn around on his way to second but Sweeney Howard and Werth started cracking up yelling at him to get back to second

It is rare that I agree with a termination for a single statement, but that one was definitely deserving!
Called a Strasburg a wimp and called out the Nats for babying him, and then he needed TJ surgery.

I know it is water under the bridge, but I wonder if he would have been fired if Strasburg had not needed the surgery… not to say he did not deserve it either way for what he said.
You throw that on top of the comments he made about female fans attending the games in the DC Mallpark and it was just too much.

He mocked some women sitting behind the plate as being part of Real Housewives of DC and talking on their phones instead of paying attention and so forth.

I think if he had said it and moved on he would have been ok, but he spend the better part of like 3 innings beating the dead horse about how they shouldn’t come if they aren’t going to watch the game, blah blah.
by WanderingMoses on Sep 1, 2010 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions
While that shouldn’t be done on National TV…probably, I got to say that I absolutely hate it when people just play with their phones during the game. Travis (from BSH) and I went to game 5 of the Devils series in the PLAYOFFS this year and two girls were texting and listening to their iPods the whole game. Now, granted that was in NJ and their team was playing like crap but still I had an “Urge to kill, RISING” moment.

I try to stay off mine at the ball park…. although I generally have the camera attached to my wrist and hand.
Cameras are fine. You’re still watching the game through the lens.

keyword = girls (in reference to kid, not woman). If their Dad drug them to an NHL they didn’t care about, that’s what he’s gonna get
This was the conclusion we came to but still, the dude didn’t have two friends that would have liked those seats and actually would have wanted to be there? If he didn’t, why wouldn’t he try to impart the knowledge and love of the game to his daughter(s)?

By using Lidge (overused anyway) and getting that strikeout and chin music against Barajas, Charlie just whipped his piece out and smacked Barajas in the face with it

If he has command, he can live without a fastball. Trevor Hoffman dominated without a fastball for years.
Really I’ve never heard of Hoffman…cmon Lidge is not exactly the maven of control and location that Hoffman was. Re-inventing yourself, while possible, doesn’t inspire confidence in the midst of a pennant race.
I wasn’t being smart or anything, I was serious. Hoffman wasn’t always the maven of control and location that Hoffman was either. He was a hard thrower once, who evolved.
In fact, even the later Hoffman wasn’t that great of a control pitcher. What he had was one of the greatest trick pitches in the sport – just like Lidge does. Lidge needs good command, but it doesn’t have to be otherworldly.
again your view about BL is based on 2008 which was extreme/ historic
3 out of every 2 people cant do math
First unintentional walk for Lidge since July. I guess he only walks people in odd numbered months or something.
Brad Lidge, despite being overused, looked pretty good
