Dear Mr. Ricco,

I would like to apply for one of your many openings. I run slowly and injure frequently. When healthy, I throw a 50 mph fastball that is as straight as an arrow with selective command, making me gloriously effectively wild. I am not Latin, but as the first female MLB player, I would still draw fans and entertain people!

Original Alpha Flight was awesome

by SportingFanaticism on Sep 16, 2010 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Haha, no offense meant, really. I have a lot of love for the X-spinoffs like Alpha Flight. Even early New Mutants (pre-Cable) was pretty good.

by Trev223 on Sep 16, 2010 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions

The original New Mutants were kind of awesome, i just finished a lot of recoupoing of comic books digitally and some of the things i got were all the marvel graphic novels and the original 80s alpha flight and new mutants comics.

Plus x-factor from the begginning

by SportingFanaticism on Sep 16, 2010 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh, those early graphic novels have some real gems. And I completely forgot about X-Factor. That and Excalibur seem to really depend on writing talent as they move along, but the early concept on X-Factor is solid. I got a bunch of that stuff digitally a while back…I guess I should revisit it.

by Trev223 on Sep 16, 2010 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I sort of went crazy with the digital stuff, i filled up half a TB hard drive with stuff…

Haha, it’s like I woke up my dad shuffling through comic books. “Sorry sir…we’ll keep it down.”

Also, yeah, it’s easy to get carried away w/digital comics. I ended up with, like, 20 years of X-Men chronology because of accession mania — being so used to the physical thing, it’s almost like a hoarding impulse.

I went back and got stuff from before i was born, complete hulk, complete avengers, complete thor, found the complete disassembled which was 37.2 gb all by itself

by SportingFanaticism on Sep 16, 2010 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh wow — I didn’t realize Disassembled was so huge…I just followed the flagship Avengers title and called it a day. I went ahead and got the complete Capt. America and Thor; the early Kirby stuff on both is a revelation.

by Trev223 on Sep 16, 2010 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Well this goes back and gets everything that even might be related including all kree-skrull war old school stuff

It’s like the final crisis thing i downloaded – it goes all the way back to pre crisis on infinite earths monitor appearances (and to think I had all those freaking comics with their 75 cent price tag)

by SportingFanaticism on Sep 16, 2010 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh, okay. I kind of had the same thing happen with Secret Invasion — lots of old, skrull related stuff that provided context, if not actual content. I know the feeling, though, of seeing those old comics and being irritated at the price possibilities. I never had many myself, but my uncle had a box of comics that I thought would be worth a fortune; he just didn’t buy the right ones, it turned out.

by Trev223 on Sep 16, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I had a 20 dollar a week allowance and supplemental income that all went to comics :)

This difital thing allows me to find stuff i loved but would be impossible to find these days like Shatter (first computer generated mainstream comic) or Elementals

by SportingFanaticism on Sep 16, 2010 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Haha, smart use of the cash; through college and high school I did the same thing, basically. I haven’t heard of Shatter — though based on the early, trippy Iron Man digital graphic novel, I’d like to see it. The rare stuff really is so much easier to get at digitally, even indie stuff like Ms. Tree or Love and Rockets; with collections incomplete or prohibitively expensive, those single issues are a real balm.

by j reed on Sep 16, 2010 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I realize that it’s a “part of the game” and that Derek Jeter is the lowest of low hanging fruit, but his whole HBP-when-not-really schtick (Commercial/video warning) was irritating as hell. I can handle (read: tune out) the monstrous love for the “classy way he plays the game,” but watching him smugly recount how he tricked an umpire just puts the lie to that so effectively.

by Trev223 on Sep 16, 2010 9:47 AM EDT reply actions

Jeter should be embarrassed. that is NOT part of the game. To me its totally different than a guy raising his glove on a trap as if he caught the ball or a runner knowing he didnt beat a throw or tag. Those things happen every single game. And I’d have no problem if he just kept his mouth shut and ran to first if the ump awards him the base but to fake an injury and have the trainer come out is just weak!!

Can you imagine if A-Rod did that???

by PSUcup1 on Sep 16, 2010 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Can you imagine if A-Rod did that???

A lot of people are saying this this morning, and it’s completely true.

I’ve never had a problem with Jeter, but his aura of — well, whatever his aura was — is completely gone for me at this point. At one point I considered him a really smart baseball player, then I watched him bunt foul to strike out against Chan Ho Park with two runners on and nobody out in a World Series game. I used to consider him classy and then I see this. I mean, not to overreact or anything, but this is pretty bad, as you said, Trev.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 16, 2010 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree…it would have been one thing if the ball hit the bat and the ump awarded him first. But Jeter clearly played it off as if he was hit on the elbow or wrist. That is why he was awarded first base. The ump probably felt like most of us do, Jeter would never sink to that level so he must have been hit. Except that he wasn’t.

Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

At the very least, he’s probably not getting many close calls. Why in the hell would you admit you were doing it? It’s funny how A-Rod was a shame to baseball players everywhere when he “called off” a fielder on the opposing team as he ran the bases on a pop-up, but Jeter pulls something equally shady and is lauded as a heady, smart player out to help his team win.

by Cormican on Sep 16, 2010 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

by wildcatlh on Sep 16, 2010 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Jeter was just doing this to protect ARod from criticism if ARod were ever to pull this stunt. That’s how good a teammate Jeter is; that unclutch bum ARoid probably would’ve blamed Jeter while banging Madonna if their roles were reversed.

Agreed- While I can understand and stomach a player taking a base he is awarded even when he knows that he has not been hit (I don’t like the dishonesty, but can accept that it is part of the game), what Derek Jeter did (all of the drama after the HBP) is classless and much reduces my opinion of him.

Old-fashioned I guess, but I’ve never truly understood why our sports culture is all about getting over on officials, and there are bona fide subsegments of it who ardently believe that “well if the ump doesn’t see it, that’s on him.” Furthermore, why does the MLB or any league suspend guys for charging the mound or gambling on another baseball game but not going public with an account like this? Integrity of the game. ::rolls eyes::

The rest of us have to call our own fouls.

by Wet Luzinski on Sep 16, 2010 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

To be fair, getting over on officials seems to be an important element of international soccer as well.

by taco pal on Sep 16, 2010 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

true, true. Unsure where I get my inner priggishness.

by Wet Luzinski on Sep 16, 2010 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

And it’s the only criticism of soccer that I consider truly valid. My friend and I have talked ad nauseam about how there need to be retroactive suspensions for diving and cheap shots that the ref can’t catch, and it would solve the problem almost immediately.

I think the same goes for WL’s suggestion here in the sport at issue. I know it’s something of a slippery slope, but Jeter’s was a clear case of simulation and should be punished accordingly.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 16, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, when I played soccer as a kid, my ‘job’ usually was to shadow the best player on the other team, annoy the crap out of him and try and get him ejected diving never occurred to me though

Speaking of which, with a the stuff going on about Jeter in terms of the more generalized
“gamesmanship/cheating” discussion was the 2006 World Cup when Zidane head-butted Materazzi in the chest for accusing Zidane’s mother, who is Algerian, of being a terrorist. (so i read) The idea being that Italy was playing for a shoot out in which they would have the advantage if France didn’t have Zidane. Is this true, I don’t know but thought it kinda of interesting.

I forgot about that, but is it typically considered taboo in the “unwrtten book of soccer etiquette”? I mean penalty kicks really favor the shooter in soccer whereas in hockey for example it’s much more difficult to score on a penalty shot.

I. Want. Phillie. still can’t wait. those Phuckers don’t scare me. we just can’t let their lead get any more out of hand. and we also have to accept the fact that all the other teams in the NL East are essentially bowing down to them, and turning it up a notch for us. that’s fine.

Because they think they can whoop the league leader six ways to sundown?

by dannijd on Sep 16, 2010 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

because winning those games has the potential to be back in the driver’s seat. Right now, there’s a 3 game lead, with 6 games between the two teams.

The breakdown is as follows:
Win 6, gain 6
Win 5, gain 4
Win 4 gain 2
Win 3 gain 0
Winning those games is the quickest way to get back in first place.

I read the game recap at TC and the comments from yesterday’s game. It only takes a spoonful of empathy to imagine the commentary over here would be similar in the same situation.

Beyond Chief NAH, there was also a lot of TC rage directed at the team. Bottom line is that the more the Braves fall behind (esp if they are 4+ GB) the more they will have to sweep in Philadelphia against quite a pitching lineup and a full stadium of loud fans. Definitely- think of how many of us on this blog were as the Phillies were losing their lead in the East and again in July as the Braves lead grew larger… At least then we as phans had the knowledge that there was a lot of time left on the clock— they do not even have that.

that last part is hilarious

Why would they randomly turn it up a notch for the Braves when the Phillies are defending nl champions? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Just a day after Yahoo publishes this slobbering piece of how Jeter is just beyond statistics, he proved it last night

by SportingFanaticism on Sep 16, 2010 10:45 AM EDT reply actions

Essentially, Jeter will be worth whatever his next contract is based on his past performance, and the aura he has as a clubhouse leader. Brilliant, brilliant stuff.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 16, 2010 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

So far this year in the media it’s been fait accompli that he’ll be getting like 25 million per year in his next deal and that he is worth that because he is THE DEREK

What’s funny is this morning i heard a comparison that ‘cal ripken’ would have done exactly the same thing jeter did. I laughed to myself because I consider Ripken and his streak one of the most selfish things ever in professional baseball, on a level with Brett Favre

by SportingFanaticism on Sep 16, 2010 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope Jeter gets 50 bajillion dollars a year in his next contract, that it is guaranteed, and that it is quite lengthy. I also hope the contract is with the Yankees.

He does deserve it. More importantly, so do the Yankees.

Remember the Phitans

by RememberthePhitans on Sep 16, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I like where you’re going with this, except that the Yankees’ budget is so much bigger than everyone else’s that it wouldn’t really hurt them that badly. It’s like the U.S. government wasting lots of money on some piece of military equipment that doesn’t work. It’s still isn’t going to have any real effect on the level of military superiority.

by taco pal on Sep 16, 2010 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t see how he ends up signing with anyone but the Yankees. He’s worth way more to them in dollar terms than any other team anyway.

by SethC on Sep 16, 2010 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

He’d be worth more to the Mets who have both a proclivity for acquiring past their prime veterans and would love to get out of the Yankees shadow. That said, he’s as likely to sign with the Mets as I am to date Minka Kelly.

by Cormican on Sep 16, 2010 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

no way the yankees let him go. He IS the current Mr. Yankee. He will retire a Yankee.

by Bilzo on Sep 16, 2010 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

proclivity for acquiring past their prime veterans

also applies to the White Sox

by j reed on Sep 16, 2010 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

More than anything, I’m fascinated to see how the positional aspect plays out. Jeter can’t stay on shortstop much longer at this point, and that could be, ummm, a sticking point in negotiations.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 16, 2010 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah , where’d they play him other than SS. 2nd base is the only spot I can think of but Cano can’t play SS unless they put A-Rod back at SS and Cano at 3rd.

by j reed on Sep 16, 2010 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

There was talk (granted I read this on ESPN, so take from it what you will), that Jeter may be moved to the outfield at some point in the future. When asked about it, Jeter replied that he was a shortstop.

by dannijd on Sep 16, 2010 8:38 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

This is the thing. Will he ever accept a positional switch? I don’t know, he’s never ever seemed amenable to it. So you’re talking about shelling out $20MM+ per year for an aging shortstop who can’t hit anymore, could never really field well in the first place, and won’t move off the position. It’s really a pickle for the Yankees. Which I like!

by SethC on Sep 17, 2010 3:02 AM EDT up reply actions

He didn’t accept one when the best short stop in the game was obtained by the yankees.

For all his public image, I think of Jeter like Ripken, who underneath is really more about his own personal glory (iron man streak, not good for orioles when you’re old and busted) and any team glory is incidental to his personal glory

by SportingFanaticism on Sep 17, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but even Cal accepted a position change late in his career.

by Cormican on Sep 17, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Bingo in the second half of your sentence. A-Rod was always a better SS anyway.

by Cormican on Sep 16, 2010 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

He was… but he doesn’t seem to be a particularly good 3B these days. It’s possible that he’s lost a step, even relative to Jeter.

Has he gone under the knife for the labrum surgery? I believe he’s had hip pain which makes sense if he didn’t have the surgery as well as if he did – post-op, rehab issues like Mike Lowell.

Question:

Is anyone else kind of worried about Halladay going into the playoffs?

He’s logged more innings than anyone in baseball so far, and it may be starting to become apparent. HIs last four starts, I think, he’s given up 3+ runs in each of them.

by MyronBales on Sep 16, 2010 11:09 AM EDT reply actions

It’s 5 straight starts actually, but I’m not worried. He hasn’t given up more than 4 in any of them either, and has gone at least 6 innings each time. His K/BB over that span is 30/3.

Basically he’s given up a flurry of homers, and last night had quite a few groundballs go through. It’s not like this is uncharted territory for Halladay; he always pitches a ton of innings.

by SethC on Sep 16, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

It may be nitpicking

but it really seems (of course it could just be me paying closer attention to it) as if he gives up a lot of 2 strike hits… he had a few guys buried in counts last night only to throw them very hittable strikes. I understand his philosophy is to get ahead in the count and stay ahead. but a guy with as good of control as halladay may benefit from throwing a few more pitches out of the zone…

Also Sarge always talks about how hitters are very comfortable in the box against Doc due to his amazing control. Maybe some more chin music might be beneficial as well

by PSUcup1 on Sep 16, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

This. I don’t think there is anything to worry about. His K/BB is outstanding, but his BABIP is very high and he is letting up a flukishly high number of homers per flyball. He’ll be fine.

by Bilzo on Sep 16, 2010 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m hoping we can lock up the division early so he can get some extra rest. The innings are piling up and its possible he’s getting tired.

by Nikk.m on Sep 16, 2010 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s possible, but he does have a 2.50 ERA in September for his career, despite always starting the month with 190 innings already pitched. The dude is just a bionic pitching machine.

But absolutely, rest him (and the others, if possible) if the division is locked up.

by SethC on Sep 16, 2010 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Lets flip that upside down.

I.P. = outs made / 3, and it’s a leaderboard.

You now feel better about having the league leader in that stat.

by Shazbot on Sep 16, 2010 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

not worried based on innings pitched

But, he may be a little tired and he has never pitched in the playoffs. That, I am a little bit worried about. Especially if he is starting game 1 in a series. I am not that worried though. Just a tad.

by PhilsForever on Sep 16, 2010 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

shouldnt the phillies be the home team during their series in Toronto? its not fair that the blue jays get to be the home team 2 years in a row.

Chase Utley is so good that on one pitch he stole second, third and the shortstop's hat.

by ajr142 on Sep 16, 2010 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

They specifically scheduled the series in 2011 to make up for the fact that the Philllies @ Blue Jays series this season had to be moved to Philadelphia because of the G20 Summit in Toronto occurring right down the road from Rogers Centre. I also believe Blue Jays fans wanting a chance to see Roy Halladay return to Toronto had something to do with the schedule this series again in 2011.

The best thing about Tim Tebow is his former roommate.

by Justin F. on Sep 16, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

In all fairness though, it may make sense to make the Phillies the home team in Toronto, since Toronto was the home team in Philly this year.

by Cormican on Sep 17, 2010 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

From Jayson Stark today:

One more Phillies development: Amaro took issue with our suggestion last week that their blueprint in right field for next season, assuming Jayson Werth goes off to hit the free-agent lottery, is to give Domonic Brown the job and complement him with a veteran right-handed bat.

“That’s one possible solution,” Amaro said. “But I’m not anointing Domonic Brown as a major league player. He’s not our right fielder yet. People think he’ll automatically be our right fielder next year. But he’s got a long ways to go before that happens.”

Well gee, Ruben. I’m so glad you brought him up to the majors and cost him all those at bats he could have had down in AAA if you don’t think he’s ready to be our everyday right fielder. Also, I hate the idea that they would “complement him with a right handed bat.” Because, while not explicit, it sounds an awful lot like “platoon.” And I have to admit, I’m kinda disturbed with the way they’ve been handling him against lefties (i.e. not letting him face them). He’s certainly too good to be a platoon player, but if they keep this up they damn well could turn him into one.

Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will.

by FuquaManuel on Sep 16, 2010 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t like what they’ve done either, but I wouldn’t take this at face value. I think what Ruben is really saying here is “Don’t start slacking Brown, you still need to work hard.” Also he’s paying lip service to Werth, in that he doesn’t expect to re-sign him but doesn’t think he can or should say that as long as Werth is still a key member of the team.

I think you’re right.

Also, FM, we should leave open the possibility that Amaro is actually brilliant. How so? A solid right-handed fourth outfielder might be a good idea to spell Ibanez and maybe even Victorino. But he can hold it over Brown’s head in the meantime.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 16, 2010 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Duh FM…I’ve got the answer to this one……Ruben’s a racist.

by Bilzo on Sep 16, 2010 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t you know if Brown wasn’t black he’d be in AAA the entire season untill the roster expanded than be brought up to jump back and fourth with Jason Werth when a RHP is on the mouns. Than he would be given a 50 Billion dollar a year contract after they assanate Howard / Rollans / Fransisco / Mayburry to make cap room
