Wow seems like this make-up game is from last year. I forgot this game is from a series in early May where a game was rained out, then pushed to a double-header the next day, where the second game got rained/snowed out.

If you say so. The whole thing was asinine, Morgan the biggest ass, before during and after, but still the whole thing is asinine, and this whole ’it’s part of the game’ thing just is ridiculously stupid

Oh I don’t disagree that Morgan is an ass and that the brawl itself was a total joke but seeing Morgan get flattened by Sanchez’s clothesline was hilarious and Morgan deserved it.

It’s amazing that Howard has been able to maintain this friendship with Bonds. Bonds, by many accounts, tends to push people away after a little while.

I still am more impressed by David S. Cohen’s… one hand, barehand, holding ice cream. Greater level of difficulty.
But which one had more artistic merit?
Might I remind you that David’s was also artistically embellish’d in BURL:

(aside from the last three lines of the poem, “unspilling the helmet-filled sweetness/of the sprinkled cream of Ice” is the poetic turn I like best), so it’s way better.

upcoming pitching matchups
9/2 – Joe Blanton vs. Jhoulys Chacin
9/3 – Cole Hamels vs. Chris Capuano
9/4 – Roy Halladay vs. Dave Bush
9/5 – Kyle Kendrick vs. Randy Wolf
9/6 #1 – Roy Oswalt vs. Anibal Sanchez
9/6 #2 – TBA vs. TBA
9/7 – Joe Blanton vs. Chris Volstad (if not suspended)
9/8 – Cole Hamels vs. Andrew Miller (now that Ricky Nolasco is out for the year)
9/9 – OFF
Volstad could conceivably be moved to the second 9/6 game but Miller cannot be moved to 9/7, so the Marlins would still have a TBA at some point in the series. No idea who it might be. Sean West is on the DL but had a setback recently so it won’t be him.
Brett Sinkbeil maybe? He hasn’t started this year, but he’s the only “starting” pitcher on their 40-Man in the minors.
I guess they could start Badenhop, and just figure he’ll only go ~3-4 innings. Sosa is the only other similarly possible starter that I see. I’d be fine with any of those options.
Looks like Sinkbeil’s been used as a reliever this year. Link.
I’ll bet they wish they had Nate Robertson back right about now. If Volstad gets suspended and has to miss a start, they’re going to be pretty screwed.
Man, I gotta lay off of the coffee. Both times I read that last name as “Sinkerbell”.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
Just remember- the Phillies are going to have to use a AAA pitcher for one of those games, too… It is not like Halladay (or even Kendrick) is going to be playing the second game of the double header.

marlins AAA pitchers on 40-man
Jay Buente (20 G, 0 GS, 30.1 IP, 22 H, 3 HR, 18 BB, 38 K, 2.67 ERA)
Chris Leroux (21 G, 0 GS, 22.0 IP, 26 H, 2 HR, 7 BB, 20 K, 6.95 ERA)
Brett Sinkbeil (56 G, 0 GS, 61.0 IP, 75 H, 4 HR, 30 BB, 56 K, 5.90 ERA)
Taylor Tankersley (25 G, 0 GS, 24.1 IP, 20 H, 3 HR, 7 BB, 20 K, 3.70 ERA)
Tim Wood (14 G, 0 GS, 14.0 IP, 19 H, 4 HR, 4 BB, 12 K, 6.43 ERA)
Not a single starter in the bunch!
Probably what they should do is move one of their injured players to the 60-day (since it’s already September anyway) and purchase the contract of Brian Lawrence or Tom Mastny or some other AAAA scrub.
Derek Lowe on the shelf for the Braves with elbow pain, outlook unknown. Kenshin Kawakami (who’s pretty decent) stepping back in.
This is not really accurate. More like he was one of their unluckiest pitchers. Their starters’ xFIP rankings this year are:
Medlen 3.66 (partly as reliever)
Minor 3.67 (SSS)
Hudson 3.86
Lowe 3.94
Hanson 4.14
Kawakami 4.50
Jurrjens 4.52
Was going to do one for the Braves too, except that the Pirates’ and Cardinals’ rotations are pretty screwed up and there’s no way to tell who’s going to start for them against Atlanta once Atlanta’s done with the Marlins:
9/2 – Tim Hudson vs. Johan Santana
9/3 – Kenshin Kawakami vs. Andrew Miller
9/4 – Jair Jurrjens vs. Josh Johnson
9/5 – Mike Minor vs. Alex Sanabia
It looks as if the one starter they’re going to miss in the Cardinals series will be Jaime Garcia.
Good news. Jamie Moyer says he may be open to coming to spring training on a minor league contract, provided he gets a fair shot to prove himself. I would totally jump at that. In fact, if Jamie’s healthy enough, between him and Worley, I think we’d have the fifth-starter spot sufficiently covered so as to trade Kendrick for something useful (like maybe a new backup 3B).
I think we’d have the fifth-starter spot sufficiently covered so as to trade Kendrick for something useful (like maybe a new backup 3B).
Or a bottle of ketchup. But I agree either way…
"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel
I’ve been trying to come up with potential Kendrick deals that might work for both sides. Maybe we could we get a guy like Ryan Raburn from Detroit?
I think the question is: who needs pitching but is undiscerning?
If the Phils could sign Moyer to a minor league deal, I’d trade Kendrick for a solid backup middle infielder, to be honest.
Or a former lottery ticket who isn’t progressing in that organization (someone like Brandon Wood, perhaps).
Exactly. Not sure the Angels would part with Wood, but somebody like that would be a more than worthwhile gamble. With all due respect to Kendrick, it would behoove the Phillies to get anything of value for him with his salary set to begin escalating in the coming years.
Well, Wood has been Greg Dobbs this year (if not worse. he’svery good defensively but a .125 batting average probably didn’t help him much), and I thought they weren’t high on him as he became a bit of a last resort starter this year, after they couldn’t get a free agent.
Still, it was just an example. Maybe it’s Maybin or whomever.
I wouldn’t hang too much hope on Moyer as anything other than a mentor. Sure he’s low risk at a minor league level deal, but if you really are expecting much from him after this, I don’t think it’s a wise bet.
I think the question is: who needs pitching but is undiscerning?
So who’s looking for pitchers who can’t pitch. We should have tried to get something for him when the getting was good. I think that ship has sailed.
There are five teams with team ERAs higher than Kendrick’s: Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Arizona, Milwaukee, and Baltimore. Undiscerning? I’d say Pittsburgh has to be number one there also. Not much talent in the backup middle infield category, though. Ronny Cedeno? Sort of like Valdez. Maybe KC. Wilson Betemit might be a good addition.
by phillyinportland on Sep 5, 2010 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions
One point I was going to add to yesterday’s 5th starter-a-thon discussion was that there may be some decent pitchers out there who their original organization has soured on whom the Phillies may want to take a chance on in the off-season. The Astros pulled Brett Myers off the scrap heap. The Phils ought to be in a solid position with 4 good starters and a guy like Worley who is pretty much ready to go (in the sense that it’s unlikely he’ll be worse than Kendrick).
The Phillies have been pretty good lately at finding 6th-starter types and stashing them at AAA. Rodrigo Lopez sorta-kinda saved our season in 2009, and I wouldn’t have panicked if we’d had to use Brandon Duckworth as a short-term fill-in this year. And now we have Nate Robertson too. This is a heckuva lot better than the Paul Abbotts who used to roam around in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. I know this is a level below the level of pitcher you’re talking about, but the more backup options you have for that fifth spot, the better.
If he is open to that, I hope that the Phillies jump at it- and give him a fair chance to prove himself. He had been pitching really well for them most of this season, and deserves a chance to prove that he still has what it takes.

How do you think most stadiums get built?
How did you think Heinz field, the linc, or CBP got built?
When the economy recovers (it will at some point, but who knows when) there probably will be expansion, but there’s always greenmale involved.
For instance, you think Oklahoma City is a better basketball market than Seattle or that OKC was willing to pony up the cash?
The memphis grizzlies would love to move but there’s such a huge penalty clause in their sweet heart deal at fed ex forum it would kill em :)

I understand the strategy behind how most new stadiums come to be, the majority of the time the city is footing the majority of the bill. I am not sure I agree with that but that is the way it is. So be it.
And no, I do not think OKC is a better basketball market than Seattle. In fact, I don’t think OKC is a better market for anything than Seattle, sports, jobs, technology etc.

I think the implication is that Portland won’t be putting up money for a stadium?
by SportingFanaticism on Sep 2, 2010 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions
From what I understand Portland is not putting up money to fix The Rose Garden so I can’t exactly see them putting up money to bring a baseball team.
And even once the economy does get better, I still don’t think baseball needs more teams. If anything, they should relocate a few before they consider expansion. But that’s my opinion.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

by SportingFanaticism on Sep 2, 2010 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions
This would, indeed, be the response. Allen, even though he spends money on the Trail Blazers, is not really looked at as Portland’s own – he’s a guy from Seattle. No more public funds will go his way unless there’s some threat that can’t be ignored, like Allen moving the Trail Blazers to Seattle.

How would you feel about a 3rd team in the greater new york metropolitan area?
by SportingFanaticism on Sep 2, 2010 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions
They should put one in North Jersey. Probably an NL team. I think it would work. They’d have to pay huge compensation to the Yankees and Mets though.
I would be ok with a team in North Jersey that as well. Heck, they have two football teams and a hockey team up there already. Why not baseball? I didn’t include the Nets since they are on their way out.
I often wonder if Philly could sustain another baseball team. I am not sure that it could, but I do think about it.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
The main problem is what TV network would they put the games on. I don’t know how NY cable works, but you can’t have more than one baseball team on the same network since they play everyday, and a third local cable network in a metro area (even the NYC metro area) would have very little programming during the offseason. But maybe there’s a solution I’m not thinking of.
Well in NY don’t the Yankees and Met’s have their own networks?
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
I don’t believe the Mets on SNY and I don’t know if the yankeees still own a portion of YES (I know one team divested, but it might have been the Nets)
by SportingFanaticism on Sep 2, 2010 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions
I know they are much more minor but how does the new york market handle Islanders, Rangers, Devils (I’m asking in general, i’m not presuming you know but i know there are folk who live in new york who might know)
Is there a ‘comcast sports net’ covering northern jersey/new york?
by SportingFanaticism on Sep 2, 2010 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Not sure, but in any event, hockey’s different. You can have two teams on the same network, since they don’t all play at the same time every night.
The NY hockey market is a bit of a mess. The NJD are NJ’s team, but they don’t get coverage in South NJ because that’s PHI territory. But MSG airs them all, I think, in addition to the Knicks.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
I totally forgot about MSG network – they do the knicks – do they do a baseball team?
by SportingFanaticism on Sep 2, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions
As far as I know there is no CSN NY or CSN North Jersey.
I could explain how they manage three hockey teams, it’s actually pretty simple. The Devils are made up of mostly North Jersey residents. The Islanders have most of Long Island and the Rangers get most of their fans from NYC and it’s surrounding areas.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
I really can’t see a team in northern NJ doing well. First, everyone here has pretty much cast their lots with the Mets or Yankees. If anything it’d need to be an American League team to break up Yankee Hegemony in the region.
Plus, it’s not exactly like the Devils kick ass attendance wise.
I also don’t really know where you’d put the stadium. Meadowlands? Harrison, by the new Red Bull stadium?
http://www.thegoodphight.com
I was thinking that if you go NL, then you’d get some people who would root for both the Yankees and the NJ team. And then the allegiances would shift toward the latter over time.
One of the worst problems with the Devils and Nets was the Meadowlands, so you definitely wouldn’t want to put a stadium there. I think the Devils will start to draw better as time goes by now that they’re in Newark. You’d want to put a stadium near public transportation somewhere. So Newark, Jersey City, Secaucus, somewhere like that. I guess Harrison is accessible too.
The biggest metropolitan areas by population that don’t have MLB teams are:
Orlando 2.75 million
Sacramento 2.44 million
Charlotte 2.39 million
Portland 2.24 million
San Antonio 2.07 million
Oh and also Montreal. I would kind of like to see them get another team someday. Despite what happened with the Expos, I think it could work if things were actually done properly the next time.
When you do those numbers are those just the cities or ‘outlying’ populations (20-30 minutes away) that would be accounted for.

I think what you’re thinking of is that Vegas is the largest metro area in the U.S. with no team at all. Not just no baseball team.

by SportingFanaticism on Sep 2, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions
By way of comparison, the five smallest metro areas with MLB teams currently are:
Cleveland 2.89 million
Pittsburgh 2.45 million
Cincinnati 2.21 million
Kansas City 2.14 million
Milwaukee 1.76 million
The growth rates are very different though, as you might expect. These percentages stand for changes between 2000 and 2009.
Orlando +25.40%
Sacramento +17.73%
Charlotte +25.97%
Portland +16.29%
San Antonio +21.06%
Cleveland -1.83%
Pittsburgh -3.19%
Cincinnati +8.04%
Kansas City +12.39%
Milwaukee +4.18%
I’m usually impressed with the Brewers attendance figures, in light of that info. They usually finish in the top half of the league in attendance.

What is your opinion on the batting woes of the Phillies. Is this something you feel they can come out of any time soon, and can they make the playoffs if it continues?
Joe Morgan
The amazing thing to me is they fired their hitting coach. He was there when they won back to back pennants and they have not hit better since. They are definitely an offensive led team. They do not have four great starters nor a great bullpen. If their offense continues to struggle, then no they won’t make the playoffs. But I expect Ryan Howard to do what they’ve done and lead the team in September to another championship.
