Sidearm? It’s pretty cool. Hard to control, I would imagine. Hard to read, too, for the hitters.

Most people just jump right in with the D-Cell, but the best battery-throwers (also known as all Philadelphians) start with the C-Cell. The smaller size allows a better grip, especially important for the beginner.

I only recommend the D-Cell for the most advanced Philadelphians. Thee 9-Volt is another interesting choice, as it’s unusual shape allows a curve-ball effect.

He figures they might lose these games anyway. So save big pitchers to beat worse teams and go for WC

That’s what seemed to make more sense. Making the playoffs as the wild card team would be fine and the Braves wouldn’t have to face the Phillies in the first round. No reason to change the rotation to overexpose Lowe and Hudson to the Phillies batters.

I’m having a hard time seeing “the bigger picture”. But humans confuse me at times.

I think the reason Bobby did it

Was because he wanted us to win the games we SHOULD win on the road, so he went with the big three against the Mets. I’m assuming he didn’t want to put too much weight on one series in Philly and wanted to concentrate on getting the games we knew we could win. That and Jurrjens didn’t inform the Braves of his apparent knee “tweak” he had on Friday until Saturday. Beachy pitched relatively well tonight, though I think he had 10 flyballs and had the wind been blowing out, it would have caused a lot more damage. For his sake, I hope he sees it as a confidence booster for his future. The error killed us.

True Phils hit a lot of hard balls off the kid but he held on

I felt like he was just hanging on the whole night

I was thinking it was a bit cruel to throw a rookie in in that situation, but it shows you how little confidence the Braves have in Kawakami!

by E-Lizz on Sep 20, 2010 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

at least Beachy made it close

with Kawakami it would have been a blowout.

Yea he was good, wonder how he’ll do next year, gotta keep those flyballs in

by Sept.28.Oct.27.Dec.28.2008 on Sep 20, 2010 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

He was throwing his off-speed up in the zone

Very nerve wracking watching him pitch, but he really did pitch well under the circumstances. The error is what really killed the Braves, which is surprising considering the talk going into the series is that we’d be killed by the pitching. This still has a chance to happen of course, but even if you’re outmatched, you have to play to your strengths and our defense has been solid all year. Not the time to make the errors.

by E-Lizz on Sep 20, 2010 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

yea solid defense kept the game close early, freak things happen

Such a bad season for KK

Had no run support for half the season. Then after that, he just….sucked. I would say his days with the Braves are over.

I liked Mike Dunn. Good stuff.

by essman on Sep 20, 2010 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Dunn has been good so far

I’m still in shock Farnsworth got em 1-2-3.

Beachy in part benefited from having not been seen by our line up before. To his credit, he did well until the batters had “seen” him.

I thought about this

Its definitely an advantage for the pitcher the first time he faces a team.

Maybe Bobby's really smart

And knows that unproven rookies making their major league debut more often than not will no-hit the Phils into the 8th…

That is amazing. It has to be close to the best ever for a Phillies team over that many games. 1993/1976/1977? Can’t imagine another year with such a long high winning percentage.

by phillyinportland on Sep 20, 2010 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions

93 Phillies were on fire at the start of the year. I bet they’d be close.

’77 Phils went 43-16 in June & August.

and

’76 Phils went 44-15 from April-ish to July.

by perfectdepth on Sep 20, 2010 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for looking those up. I figured there had to be a stretch like this year’s in there somewhere. So if this year’s team has a 42-15 period currently and the 1993 team went 44-17, this year’s run is slightly better. But the thing about 1993 was they went on for another 15 games or so and reached a peak of 51-21 on June 25th, winning percentage of .708 through 72 games. If the Phillies finish this year with seven more wins, 97-65, they will have played the final 68 games at what is probably an all-time team record. 97-65 was the record the 1993 Phillies had, by the way, and was surpassed only by the ‘76-’77 teams.

I’m sure Cole was getting squezed by the ump tonight for 3 reasons.
1. Cole was thrown out of a game by this joke of an ump in Toronto
2. Cole struck out 6 not one of them was looking.
3. MLB live’s pitch tracker had pitches consistantly called balls to Braves hitters strikes to Phillies hitters.
