Well Dunn: Nationals 2, Phillies 1
We're doing bullet points!
- Roy Oswalt got his work in, allowing just a single unearned run on two hits and two walks, striking out three. He threw just 67 pitches.
- Raul Ibanez accounted for the Phillies' only run on a solo bomb in the fourth inning.
- Lots of baserunners, no runs. The Phillies collected nine hits and two walks, but couldn't push any additional runs across. Blame the malt liquor, I guess.
- Antonio Bastardo, vying for a postseason roster spot as LOOGY DEUCE, made his case, striking out the side in a perfect bottom of the eighth.
- Adam Dunn mercifully ended the game in the bottom of the ninth on a walkoff home run.
- Phillies are still the NL East Champions.
Goodnight!

But…. he can talk to marine life. Imagine how useful that’ll be in 2012 when the Miami Marlins will have fish tanks behind home plate!
Hahaha
I was not present for the creation of the Dobbs = Aquaman meme, but I must admit… I love it.

BTW...
Rays, Yanks, and Reds all clinch tonight. The only races left are NL West, AL East, and NL WC
The Reds clincher was a Jay Bruce walkoff HR. Now that’s gotta be a cool experience.
Now that's what I call high quality H2O!
I feel like a lot of people are taking them too lightly. They are a pretty good team and most of the games the Phils played against them were walk-off variety, were they not?
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
Yeah… as impressive as the 4 game road sweep was, they were competitive until the last out pretty much each time.
4 game road sweep? The Phillies swept the Reds at home in 3 extra inning games, and one 1-0 non-walkoff win. During that period, the Phillies almost got perfectoed, only to have a returning Chooch break it up with a double in the 9th, a 6 run 9th inning comeback, and a 13 inning game featuring blown saves by both a returning Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge. That being said, the Phillies have never played the Reds healthy- Chooch missed 5 of the 7 games in the season series, Polanco missed the season series entirely, and Chase was injured in the first game of the season series- he stayed in and played, but was a shadow of himself and proceeded to miss the remainder of the games. I am not saying I do not take them seriously (when your wins against a team are 3 walk offs, 1 extra inning win (granted the Phillies led until Lidge blew the save), and 1 1-0 win), the match up is truly pretty even.
Shit, I thought that was in Cincy. So a 4 game home sweep it was? Either way, it was what was needed at the moment.
I feel like the Reds’ pitching was much better back then though, Leake was a stud at the time. I wonder if Chapman’s gonna be like David Price was in 2008.

I agree with you on their pitching, although it can alway come back around— all of their pitchers have shown the capability of pitching well, it is just a question of which version of themselves comes out.
Chapman may have a Price-esque effect- watching him pitch against the Padres last Friday, he was regular scary— not only was he pitching incredibly fast, but he was wild- he had a ball 4 that missed hitting a Padres player in the head by inches. If I remember right, he allowed the runs that ultimately allowed the Padres to win the game. While he is a terror, the fact that he is only a one inning terror is somewhat comforting.

I hate to say it, but part of me thinks that too- with wanting to rest players, getting done in nine was worth more than the win.
Unintentional intentional meatball. It was his subconscious.

If he can serve up a walk-off to Nate McClouth think how easy it was to do it with Adam Dunn.

Bastardo
Needs to get more gametime. I’d really like to see him on the PS roster.
I think we will be seeing a lot of him now that the divisision is clinched. That being said, one good game tonight does not erase a number of bad games that he has participated in. Because of his inexperience, he is something of a wild card. That being said, I would almost expect him to be on the PS roster— he was brought up just before September so that he would be eligible for the roster, and with Romero not pitching that well, he may be the LOOGY this team needs.
The dude has 22 Ks in 16 IP of work, he definitely has the stuff, to say nothing of his absolutely crazy numbers in AAA. He has nothing left to prove, he definitely deserves to be on the PS roster.

It is not just the Ks that worry me— he has been hit hard (including a couple of long balls) during his time in the majors. While I would agree that his crazy AAA numbers tell us that he has nothing left to prove in the minors, I question the decision to lean on him too heavily in the post season.
He’s had a .373 BABIP. he strikes out a ton, and he’s been seriously unlucky. He’s good enough for me. Also, he’s given up 1 HR so far this year. So much for “a couple of long balls”.
Please, look at the numbers before continuing this.

Who said anything about him being leaned on heavily during the post-season? You say it as if this “decision” has already been made.
Seriously, if you have even the slightest inkling that what you are about to post is completely absurd, don’t post it.

Very cool seeing activity on the basepads tonight, it’ll be important if Taco Bell does their “Steal a base, steal a taco.” campaign.
Shane Victacorino?
Andres Tacorres?
Brettaco Gardner?
or maybe even Jim Tacome?
