AdVance to Go: Marlins at Phillies Game Thread the First, September 6, 2010
Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies, Sep 6, 2010 1:05 PM EDT
The Marlins and Phillies square off in game one of a Labor Day day-night doubleheader and are sending their rookies to the hill for the afternoon's action.
Adalberto Mendez gets the ball for the Fish, and Vance Worley, recently called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, goes for the Phillies. Please call him "Nite Owl" - it pleases Wet Luzinski.
Discuss the game below.

Raul sailed a 2 seamer to the dugout side of third, followed by Schneider sailing a 2 seamer over Utley’s head.

Not a single pitch to Howard was a strike. Yet he swung at 4 of them. I think only one was to Utley, he swung at about 6.
Discipline, people. Discipline. Where did it go?

Just one out on the basepaths. He wouldn’t have gotten an out in the first inning regardless. Still, the overall point holds.
The run eventually didn’t score, but him missing the cutoff allowed the runner to advance to 2nd. So I count that against him.

Of course, I’m only going by what I see on gameday.
That first pitch on TV looked way out many have and Worley pitches them and they are called balls seems biased. Not to mention every meatball the marlins dude throws all to the Phils have just watched them go by.

So they aren’t butt Pirates?
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Considering that the Pirates took 3 of 4 from the Phillies in Pittsburgh and Atlanta is not a great road team (actually sub-.500 on the road), they are maybe not quite so bad.
No
They are an absolutely terrible baseball team. They’re actually OUTPERFORMING their pythagorean record by FOUR GAMES.

Just out of curiosity (and because I know that the Phillies run differential is not huge), how do the Phillies compare to their pythagorean record?
loading the bases and then stranding one…scary way to save us…
Dubee or not Dubee, that is the question.

I still don’t understand the logic behind the unwritten rule that says that when you are down by 11 runs you can’t steal bases and that you are essentially just supposed to pack up and quit.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
I always heard it as not stealing bases when you are X runs up, not down.
I guess what rankled them about Morgan is that he appeared to be doing it out of spite, rather than “accepting his punishment”. Whatever.
And not stealing when up X amount of runs at least makes sense. Though I have always been of the belief that you don’t stop trying to score until the game is over. Heck, we saw two 10 run leads evaporate on the same day. Who is to say that X number of runs is safe?
I agree though that it seems like Morgan was stealing bases as a way to trying to be spiteful as opposed to winning a ballgame.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

Yeah X runs up and stats padding is lame, but why is the other? Are you padding stats because your doing things that have no meaning because the likelhood of winning is so improbable?. If so they should have a Slaughter Rule.
Evan Meek time kids…and that’s actually a good thing

Regardless, the play was made at first. 2 down, runners at 2nd and 3rd with Nate McLouth at the plate.

At least there were some signs of life from the offense at the end. I think that’s a good thing for game two, giving a few hitters something positive to build on. I can’t give any statistics but back in the days when doubleheaders were fairly common I think you would see that quite a lot. One team gets blown out in game one but starts to show signs of life at the end, then wins game two.
