Hang On For Dear Life: Marlins at Phillies Game Thread, September 8, 2010
Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies, Sep 8, 2010 7:05 PM EDT
First place? Check. Hanging on? To be determined.
The Phillies send Cole Hamels to the mound against Andrew Miller for the Marlins, in an attempt to keep a solid hold on first place in the NL East. What a weird season.
Discuss the game below.

"The punt to DeSean Jackson. The punt. Short, Jackson takes it at the 32. Looks for running room, reverses the field. He's at the 40. 50, 45, 40, 35, 30, He's gonna go!
"McNabb in the shotgun again. McNabb takes the snap, fakes, he's back, he's looking, he is going deep for DeSean Jackson, who races, has it! TOUCHDOWN!!! DeSean Jackson!!

andrew miller's had a weird year
Spent most of the season in the minors – in fact, he was in AA, where he had a 6.01 ERA and 61 BB in 85.1 IP. As recently as August 20, Baseball America said about him, “Marlins LHP Andrew Miller is lost.” Then he came up to the majors and beat the Braves on September 3.
I’m scared of no-name lefties that the Phils haven’t seen before.

And that took me forever to post. Does anyone know how to easily resize an image you find through google images?
put a height (200 is probably good, or smaller) in the code that comes up when you insert a picture…try this, for example:

With a mustache like that you deserve to be 1-8 in the minors.

Looked like he had to take a half step to make sure he touched the bag at third and it slowed his momentum up.

Question: Has Ryan ever made contact with a catcher at the plate? Seems like it’d be a no-brainer for a guy with his size. Is it an un-written rule or something?

So you’re saying that if Ryan tries to score that run by taking out the catcher they’d retaliate? Is that how it works?

I’ve never heard of that. If there is a play at the plate then you do what you have to, to score, I don’t care if it’s Ryan Howard against Honus Wagner, you run him over if the situation warrants it.

Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will.
2010 Rollins .685 OPS
2010 Valdez .627 OPS
Of course JRoll’s speed and defense are superior. Regardless, if JRoll needs to be on the mend for a bit, I’m alright with that.
Well, upon further inspection . . .
Rollins: .240/.320/.365, .245 BABIP, .314 wOBA, 2.0 WAR
Exxon: .243/.280/.347, .266 BABIP, .287 wOBA, 0 WAR

Dude if you had 5 Gretzkys, they’d control the puck so well they’d allow maybe 4 shots on goal all game.

I was going over board but mainly cause of how the NBC dudes at like all you need is a crosby or a gretzky or a Datsyuk and you will always win they never really mention the goalie that is awsome or the great defence.

Moreover the quality is fucking outstanding… it sounds crystal clear . The only draw back is that occasionally …10% of the time there is pause in the broadcast

If you’re laughing your not crying

Well, I liked the part where it was 10-0 behind Hamels. That is so good it makes me laugh.

That makes me about as confident as the statement “Carter Hutton will start in goal tonight for the Flyers”

Robertson is ok as a Tim Redding scenario prophylactic move, but not as an attempt to get a pitcher to actually use.

All you will think about as your vision closes to a black pinpoint will be Brad Lidge surfing a non-deceptive fastball into somebody who is prepared to club it out into the seats.
I swear to all that’s holy…if this turns into a white-knuckler…

Who do we pitch?
Raul Ibanez: since Moyer is on the DL, he is fast becoming our favorite old guy.

Madson

This could be his signature moment of the 2010 season. If he gets through the 9th I think he should get a quasi-save.

If madson’s warming up why not just pitch him warming up puts just as much wear and tear on an arm as pitching dose.

This reminds me of that game Chris Roberson blew for us back in 2007 by dropping a ball in the outfield. Except we actually lost that game.
Maybe he’s really a ringer for the Marlins.

No excuse for this horseshit. Not from the pitchers, and not from the manager.
Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will.
I’d rather throw him under the bus, thank you.

I really don’t like Dubee.
Really seems like a band of idiots on the bench sometimes.
Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will.
I can’t stand him, either. It’s not like he has to do much, what with Halladay/Hamels/Oswalt on the staff.

Yeah, and the one guy he actually needs to coach, he throws under the bus to the press.

It’s nice to have 2 pitchers who you can trust to close….. but, it must suck to know if your starter dosn’t go 7 innings than you’ve lost the game cause frount end of the BP blows.

So much for paying attention to the “unwritten rules”. Now the Phillies have to burn Madson’s arm. Again.

The fact that Madson had to be brought in, and the fact that Charlie actually used Madson makes me kind of sick.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
This. Someone complained above that they were mad at Cholly for bringing in Robertson. Not really. But Nate should have been pulled after the HR.
Raul Ibanez: since Moyer is on the DL, he is fast becoming our favorite old guy.

And yet Howard Eskin says he’s no good. Which is why I never listen to Eskin when he talks about baseball.

I can only stand Eskin for like 5 minutes before I’m ripping my hair out because he’s such a pompous idiot.
Eskin strikes me as the kind of guy who could really use a severe ass-kicking. I wish Charlie had done the honors a few years ago.

I listened to the Eskin show for the first time in forever last week. His pairing with Ike Reese is extremely awkward.

Of the current choices, it would be best to avoid San Fran (3-3 record against) and Cinci (5-2 record, with four of the Phillies wins coming in extra innings). San Diego and Colorado are definitely preferable to either of those teams or the Braves).
by dannijd on Sep 9, 2010 8:37 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
The Braves are one baserunner away from setting up a save situation for Billy Wagner, in a game they led the Pirates 9-1 in the 9th. As I speak they brought in Wagner, like Madson not elibible for the save.

Seriously…
I understand wanting to slam the door and lock up this game in the Win column, but wonder about the decision to bring in Madson in the 9th. Already did not want to have to use him last night, and now again tonight. How many days in a row has he pitched?
Hope the day off tomorrow, plus hope not need him on Friday with Doc starting will get him some much-needed rest.
