2011 National League Division Series Game One Thread -- Cardinals at Phillies
St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies, Oct 1, 2011 5:07 PM EDT
The Phillies kick off their fifth straight postseason late this afternoon in Philadelphia against the St. Louis Cardinals, who shocked the baseball world (and themselves, more than likely) with a September surge that led to the team's Wild Card berth and a date with Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, and the Phillies crew.
Due to their late season run, which went to the final day, the Cardinals were not able to align their starting rotation to permit ace Chris Carpenter to start game one. Rather, former Phillie Kyle Lohse will get the ball in the first game and will oppose Roy Halladay, who will look to repeat last season's NLDS Game One magic. Carpenter is slated to pitch game two on three days rest.
Get all your Cardinals coverage over at Viva El Birdos.
In honor of Halladay's Musings on the Bard yesterday, enjoy some Marlon Brando
Discuss the game below.

It doesn’t surprise me at all. If I was him I would only leave Boston to go to a team that opens up the check book.
However, I would think that maybe this means Tito doesn’t go there. Unless, the two of them had no issues, which is certainly possible. I have no idea in that regard.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.

Yea so Epstein can ruin another franchise by overpaying for Colby Lewis and BJ Upton
The Jruth shall be told.
The Sox won 2 titles with Epstein as the GM, not sure how he ruined them. Did he overpay for guys? Absolutely, but the Sox were still a good team.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.

if Epstein does half of what he did with the Cubs as he did with the Red Sox, then he belongs in the hall of fame.

Honestly, I have more respect for guys like Andrew Friedman.
I think it’s clearly a lot easier to be a GM when you are the GM of teams like the Yanks, Sox, and Phillies.
The fact that the cubs spent what they did every year and still sucked says a lot about how horrible Jim Hendry was.

He’s below average in generating called strikes defensively, a skill that may be incredibly important.

There is absolutely no way in hell that the TBS announcers were referring to that.
by philsandthrills on Oct 1, 2011 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Agreed. But my mind is still blown by the idea that Jose Molina’s defense may be worth as much as Pujols’ offense.
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
It isn’t. I read that yesterday when you tweeted it and those are run totals for the 5-year period.
by philsandthrills on Oct 1, 2011 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions
It says Molina saves 35 runs per 120 games, or about 47 runs per 162 games versus the average catcher.
Pujols’ oRAR this year was 43 runs over 143 games, or about 49 runs per 162 games versus the replacement first baseman.
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
Right. So 49 runs over replacement is probably not more than 47 runs over average. So Molina’s defense is probably worth more than Pujols’ offense (or at least more than Pujols’ offense this year, which was admittedly a down year).
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
I guess I didn’t address this directly.
It says Molina has saved 73 runs over five years. But he doesn’t play very much, and it works out to 47 runs per 162 games played. Which is a freaking lot.

chasing Lohse based on pitch count is basically impossible at this point. You need to chase him by pounding him now and putting up some crooked numbers
it’s not about chasing Lohse it’s about getting more hitters counts and forcing him to throw more to the middle of the plate
I have been watching on TV, without AtBat up- has Lohse been throwing a ton of strikes or are the Phillies making fair contact with garbage?

I think swinging strikes are represented by their own color on there, so you could count them.
The other option would be to go on GameDay, and go batter by batter looking at the pitch locations and results.

Just about balls and strikes- they have been ok with the other stuff so far.
"Valdez can pitch, Lee can hit... and pigs can fly."
aww isn’t that cute, the same pitch that was strike three to polly is ball one to chooch

He’s pretty bad. Ruiz has more pop than Polly. He hasn’t been the same since his elbow got messed up.
The Jruth shall be told.
3rd in BA, 6th in OBP, but yeah, his power’s down. Which means you don’t want him right in front of the pitcher, because he’ll get on, but won’t drive in guys already on base.
Bob.
The only real argument to bat him eighth ins.tead of Ruiz is that he may be a little easier to bunt over

I read somewhere Hamels won the starting pitcher hitting competition.

I was just thinking that I miss Pete Rose running out ground balls like he was late for a flight to Vegas.

something tells me Rose had a private jet for the sole purpose of going to vegas.

So it’s a full count with two outs and according to Stockton Howard is swinging to protect the runners? Did I actually hear that? Are they trying to be funny?
