I think not. Phils have five good starters under team control already. If they keep a sixth, it should be someone cheap and not as good.
Well, I think the “cheap” is the important part here. If he’s cheap, he probably won’t be as good, but I’m not going to complain if he is. I’d also add “younger,” if possible, though that’s not as important. Your #5 starter doesn’t need to be a young guy since you can just get another guy next year, though if they could trade Michael Martinez for a 26-year old junker who is out of options, I’m all for it, since that type of guy would be cheap for several years.
According to fangraphs, the White Sox had the only starting staff to accumulate more WAR than Halladay/Lee/Hamels this year (Rangers were tied with the Phillies big three). Even without Oswalt, there is a good chance the Phillies have the best rotation in MLB next year. It’s one thing if Oswalt really wanted to stay and renegotiated some sort of extension at way below market price. He can probably get a lot more from someone like Texas, NY, Boston, or St. Louis, and he’d still be pitching for a condender.
I suck at math
Halladay/Hamels/Lee had higher WAR than the entire Rangers staff too

The other moving part in this equation is Kyle Kendrick. I don’t see how they resign both, but I would personally be in favor of signing one or the other, provided, of course, that it can be done cheaply. If Oswalt resigns for something like 2 years/$10 mil, I like letting KK go and sending Worley to the pen to be our long man/spot starter. But if resigning Oswalt will be much more expensive than that, we can live with Worley in the #5 slot and Kendrick out of the pen.
Doc, Lee, Hamels, Vance...Moyer. 2012's winning combination.
