by yolacrary on Oct 4, 2011 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

this is true. It’s more a comment on Manuel coaching style which for the most part I agree with . I certainly don’t think LaRussa’s methods are good but I do feel at times Chuckles undermanages things which in a short series can be problematic. . When things aren’t working you don’t have the luxury of waiting for the law of averages to play out in a short series . That’s when I’d like to see more out of Manuel. Baseball managers have limited influence over the game and I respect Manuel’s acknowledgement of this as well as the result it typically yields. However there are times when he needs to be a bit more creative and direct the player’s approaches.

So far, Howard & Pence are the only hitters to swing at the first pitch: Pence hit a line drive right at the SS; Howard whiffed on a bad ball. Every other batter has taken a called strike.

The problem isn’t that they swing at first pitches, it’s that they take every first pitch and swing at every second. And so if you are a pitcher with a functioning brain they are spotting you two strikes.
