National League Division Series Game Five Tailgate: Phillies vs. Cardinals, Halladay vs. Carpenter
This isn't for all the marbles necessarily, but it's for the winner's portion of marbles which will be transferred to the next marble battle with the Brewers or Diamondbacks. Huzzah!
Tonight is the battle of the aces with Chris Carpenter, pitching on full-rest, facing off against King of Aces, Roy Halladay. If this isn't stomach-clenching, thrilling baseball, then it isn't and you should shut your face.
Hang on kids.

It’s kind of nice to have a game where I don’t really care about the outcome to relax before the Phillies’ game

I am torn with who I want to win.
On one hand, I sorta like the Brewers a little so I don’t want to face them. On the other hand, they blow harder than Jenna Jameson on the road so that’s a good thing.
At the end of the day though, either team would pose a challenge to whoever they play in the next round.

It’s odd I can’t watch a Division II football game without finding myself pulling for a team but for whatever reason I’m just watching it to enjoy it. Go Baseball!

Raul goes 2-4 with a 2 run homer in the 6th.
For those of you who are nervous and frightened Take your level of fear and nervousness, multiply it by 100, and that’s what every cardinal fan or player feels bout facing Doc.
This is why we Ruben spent the better part of a year relentlessly going after him.
Not for 20 wins. For tonight.
I can’t wait to see him earn his 20 million today.

Just popped my homemade ice cream cake in the freezer. I eat for comfort, so I anticipated my need for lots of ice cream tonight.
Whatever happens, happens. I won't allow myself to be upset.
Oh man
Why did you do that to me. I’m on day 6 of a water fast. Can I just chew on a piece of your ice cream cake then spit it out?
"I don’t know whether I prefer Astroturf to grass. I never smoked Astroturf." - Joe Namath
well
it’s a 14 day water fast. I’m doing it so I can be closer to Jesus.
Ah, just kidding. It’s a detox thing. Our bodies were made to be able to fast for pretty long periods of time. After a while your body starts using toxins and foreign elements for energy. I have a ton of energy and feel great, believe it or not.

Yea just water.
I drink about 100-125 oz of it a day.
I highly recommend it. This is my second time doing it but it took 5 years to build up the courage to do it again. It’s not easy, but it’s kind of a fun challenge.
"I don’t know whether I prefer Astroturf to grass. I never smoked Astroturf." - Joe Namath
What exactly is the benefit to it other than temporary weight loss?
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.

You burn toxins for energy. Weren’t you paying attention? :-P
Whatever happens, happens. I won't allow myself to be upset.
by LeepinLizardz on Oct 7, 2011 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions
it has nothing to do with weight loss (for me at least). I’m in fine shape. Aside from what LL said below me about the toxins, [warning] it cleanses your colon and intestines out from years of backed up poop- almost like an internal colonic. It’s also just a personal challenge. You can live up to 40 days or so without food assuming your average in build.
"I don’t know whether I prefer Astroturf to grass. I never smoked Astroturf." - Joe Namath
Haha!
Thanks. Yea, “fun” isn’t the word. It’s actually painstakingly boring which is my biggest complaint. I like to drink beer and wine and go out to dinner. Can’t have any of that.
"I don’t know whether I prefer Astroturf to grass. I never smoked Astroturf." - Joe Namath
If you have low body fat to begin with it’s probably hard to tell, but have you noticed whether you lost more fat or muscle during these fasts? You had to have lost some weight – even if you stay perfectly still you burn calories. And presumably the colonic cleanse would also lead to weight loss.
Does this affect your sleep? Dreams?
Are you exercising as you normally would?
by flyersfaninchicago on Oct 7, 2011 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions
The first 10-14 days burns 99% fat and very little muscle, so yes, I have noticed a change in my fat content. After x amount of time (14-20 days, depending on build) your body goes into starvation mode and begins to use muscle as energy. That’s when you suddenly have an incredibly strong urge to eat and you have to be conscious of that b/c that can get bad.
My dreams have always been extraordinarily vivid and bizarre. I wrote one down one time and it look me almost 45 minutes to include all the details.
And yes, I am exercising as normal. I went on a run today and it felt great. You really don’t have to change your lifestyle at all.
"I don’t know whether I prefer Astroturf to grass. I never smoked Astroturf." - Joe Namath
Are you taking any supplements or anything? I’ve read all kinds of “herbal detox plans” that sound like a money-making scam to me. Like the fiber they put in the mixes makes it appear that your body is eliminating all kinds of nasty like worms and stuff, but it’s just the fiber. And certain herbs are laxatives and stuff like that.
But if you’re just drinking water, I guess that’s free…
Whatever happens, happens. I won't allow myself to be upset.
by LeepinLizardz on Oct 7, 2011 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions
No, no supplements. I drink bottled water only so not exactly “free” but definitely not a marketing ploy either.

I know I’m late to the party here, but I’ve done the “lemonade diet” a few times and I’ve found it invigorating as well (despite the lack of beer). Finding Jesus at the end is a plus too!

The numbers that matter more to the Phillies’ postseason struggles than their ERA or slugging percentage are 32, 31, 32, 32, 35, 39, 30 and 28. Those would be the ages, respectively, of regulars Carlos Ruiz, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco, Raul Ibanez, Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence. One 20-something in a game that features the rigors of a 162-game season without the amphetamine pick-me-ups on which so many 30-somethings subsisted for years..This is just one paragraph. I suspect you have seen enough?

Rituals for tonight
I like our chances tonight. That said, I broke down and did the following things today in the event that my actions can influence the karmic outcome of this game:
1. Wore longsleeve throwback tee.
2. Met with a guy from Philly for work.
3. Changed the wallpaper on my phone back to a pic of CBP (I realized today that changing it to a photo of a stuffed bear killed by Hank Williams, Jr. (no joke) probably caused that losing streak near the end of the season).
4. Poured some rum for Jobu.
Anything else????
Throw style points out the window.
Is very bad to steal Jobu's rum. Is very bad.

A week or two ago, I heard a guy call into the radio to say that losing Rollins to free agency would be no big deal because (1) we won when Jimmy had bad years, so that proves we don’t need him, and (2) it would be easy to find a replacement shortstop such as Betancourt.
I have said it at least 100 times that I am grateful that I don’t live in the Philly media market. The talk radio scene would have me attempting to drive into the river on a daily basis.

I really should just start muting my TV whenever I watch TBS games.

I'm starting to to believe TBS is worse than Fox or ESPN
Didn’t think that was possible, but the last week has proven it to be true.
I hope somewhere on their HOF plagues it mentions that Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson won a world series in spite of playing on a team managed by Bob Brenly

I’m already nervous eating, hopefully I’ll make until game time to start nervous drinking…

I managed to wait all of 5 minutes after work to start drinking
Not really nervous drinking though – more just Friday night drinking.
I started at 5 doing this. Just getting worse now.

Thanks :) I’ve been meaning to write a new post since I had a few days off, but still formulating my thoughts. Feel free to spread the word! I need to figure out how to set up a “comments” section.

Thanks! I can try and figure out a way to send you my email address without broadcasting it to the world (just for my own privacy) if you want to send some thoughts. I also started it as a template for a future documentary.

I’ve decided I can either be nervous or excited, but it won’t change a thing. Either way, if they lose, all I’ll have to remember is how I prepared. And for that reason, I’m getting excited and putting my fears aside.

In multiple ways, John Axford looks like he’s playing for the 1919 Chicago White Sox.

If this game goes past 8:30 do they put they Phils on TBS?
Or will we miss the beginning of the game?
Er, yeah I meant TNT - Obviously this game is on TBS
But good to know they’ll put it on.
I would have to think that the fans of the Beer were on edge after K-Rud’s tightrope 8th inning as well.

Old school brushbacks tonight!
Hunter Pence will not guarantee a WS, but, then, neither does Carlos Beltran.
They are really playing hard tonight....1960s or 1970s style

They just said we were underway on TNT and I was like WAIT WHAT.
Then I flipped to TNT and Shrek was on…

Jeff Passan: We aren’t even out of the division series yet, and this might be the best postseason I’ve ever covered
Giving St. Louis the bird since 1982
It all started with that last night of the regular season
Which may very well be one of the most ridiculous nights of baseball ever.
Don’t forget the night before, with the Dbags walk-off grand slam in the 10th to come back from a 5-1 deficit.
well really it started a couple weeks before when the wild card races started tightening up, but yeah it was one wild night.

I am not going to the game because I am not sure that I can handle seeing Halladay shoot lasers out of his eyes and cut Cardinals hitters in half. The sight of twitching half-corpses jittering randomly in the batter’s box is more than I can handle. On tv, though, it’s ok. As long as there’s no sex bits, it’s ok for tv.

I don't know about you guys...
But I’m feeling GREAT about tonight’s match up…Doc v. Carpenter…. This is going to be one hell of a way to wrap up a DS. This post season has been phenomenal so far and I hope that the Phils pull through tonight so we can continue to indulge in this magic – God Bless Baseball.

Any reasoning for stopping at second?
He probably could have made that a play at the plate. He should have been in third with no throw.
It's in his wheelhouse!!
