That’s cheap enough, and the likely performance is probably not going to be significantly different, that I’m OK with the “comfort” pick.

http://www.thegoodphight.com

by WholeCamels on Nov 16, 2011 9:56 AM EST up reply actions

That was also on a backloaded contract. The average value was more like $1.38 million.

Also I think backup catcher is the one position where we have to defer the most to a team’s judgment, since catcher defense and “pitcher-handling” is practically impossible to measure statistically.

by taco pal on Nov 16, 2011 10:42 AM EST up reply actions

This. Schneiders familiarity with Worley and Worleys comfort with HIM is worth an extra 500k on the year. Unless RAJ was gonna go out and spend 3-4 mm on a backup catcher as an extra bat off the bench as well (or someone who could also play 1b/LF/3B and keep 3 catchers on the roster…) this is a good thing.

I heard Cuddyer used to catch in Little League. And I think he played short in Tee-Ball. Maybe we should just sign him and be done with it.

But, yes, this. Backup catcher is one position where veterancy really is worth something extra.

In fact, FWIW, Keith Woolner says there is no statistical evidence for significant pitcher-handling or game-calling ability (in Baseball Between the Numbers, my favorite bathroom reading)

I was wondering what size animal it needed to be to not be a pitch. - Roy Oswalt

by SandPhlea on Nov 16, 2011 10:20 PM EST up reply actions

Well, yeah, clearly there’s no statistical evidence for it, but is there statistical evidence against it (and in support of randomness)? I can’t imagine how anyone could possibly come up with a way to eliminate all the statistical noise so as to be able to draw a conclusion one way or the other, but maybe he did.

Arguably, if there’s a giant question mark for evaluating a part of the job, then you should ignore that whole part and make decisions on the part that you can measure (hitting). But I don’t think so. Catcher defense and pitcher-handling, especially for a backup C, is such a big part of the job that I think it’s better to take some anecdotal, unscientific evidence into consideration there, rather than looking solely at offense.

Also, there’s more to handling pitchers than in-game handling or pitch-calling. Take Schneider, for example. Last year, the story was that Schneider caught Vance Worley several times and, after observing Worley’s pitch repertoire, he noticed that Worley’s two-seam fastball was potentially a weapon. Then they worked on it and threw it more during games, and it was so effective that it became the key to his success. Obviously, all of that is totally anecdotal and unprovable. But it’s also impossible to disprove, because any evidence of pitcher-handling or game-calling ability that you could measure would be irrelevant. The observation happened from working in the bullpen together. Presumably after making this discovery (assuming that’s how it really went down), Schneider and Worley told Ruiz about it, so Ruiz started calling the two-seamer a lot too. There won’t be any evidence, whether it’s true or not. All we can go on are press reports, which are unscientific, but that doesn’t mean they’re nothing.

Now, the argument can be made that if Schneider’s greatest asset is providing help off the field, then you can hire him as a bullpen coach instead of as a backup catcher. But maybe that isn’t true. Maybe having the perspective of being behind the plate in a game is crucial to being able to help a pitcher that way. Or maybe not. Again, the point isn’t that Schneider is definitely helpful in that way. It’s just that the question marks are so big that the team should get the benefit of the doubt.

by taco pal on Nov 16, 2011 11:03 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I agree with your perspective. Being behind the plate has to mean something, as in your example of the two-seamer, and pitcher confidence in his catcher has to mean something. To answer your question, though, statistics do seem to support randomness. In the essay, “Is Mike Matheny a Catching Genius?” the writer states that Baseball Prospectus and other sources determined there was no statistical evidence that any one seemingly effective defensive catcher could transfer his game-calling results from one pitcher or team or even season to another, including “framing” ability and controlling base-stealing. However, he says “professionals within the game insist that catchers make a gigantic difference and that the question is simply beyond the capability of statistics to find.” It’s that scene with the scouts in Moneyball… The conclusion of the essay makes sense, though: “If the professionals are right and the best game-callers are having some effect that statistics can’t measure, we still have to ask how much offensive production a team could responsibly give up to obtain such an undetectable improvement.”
Here’s more on both Schneider and the essay.

by SandPhlea on Nov 17, 2011 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, there was a big twitter debate last night about this. A lot opf people seemed upset with the signing b/c of his horrible offensive year. Strangely enough, Murphy and I both tweeted the same statistic within minutes of one another, which was that the phils were 27-8 when he started last year (.500 ops) and 18-20 the year before (750ish OPS.)

My point was not to use wins as a reference, but rather to point out that with a backup catcher, who is going to start 40 some games, and get 125 ABs, the SS is so small, that his offensive production is almost irrelevant, and not so0mething you’re basing the signing on.

he had 3 fewer extra base hits last year than 2010, 8 fewer base hits total, and struck out a little more and walked a little less. for a 125 AB sample, that skews the statistics drastically, but it doesnt really change who he is as a hitter and a player.

If we’re gonna knock him, knock him for his Arm, not his bat.

Unless you’re going to go spend 2-3mm on a strong defensive catcher with a little more offensive upside (a guy like Schoppach or Laird comes to mind) its a perfectly fine signing, IMO.

by Joecatz on Nov 17, 2011 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

Right. The two main criteria for a backup catcher should be 1. Cheap, and 2. Doesn’t shit the bed. Beyond that, who cares? There aren’t any Scott Hattebergs lying around in the dumpster at this position and there isn’t that much money to be saved.

by taco pal on Nov 17, 2011 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

A little perspective

So I’m friends with Kelly Shoppachs wife. Have been since the first grade. Morosi and Rosenthal both tweeted this AM that Detroit was eyeing him, and were close to signing a catcher, so I called her to see if they were headed there. Detroit never spoke to him or his agent. Not even a check in.

there are a few other teams looking at him, but none you would think.

(Phils spoke to him, btw, but he’s looking for at least two years guaranteed at “more” than what we’re paying Schneider)

I don’t say this to brag that I know someone, (though ti would have been cool to see him end up in Philly, a I would have had the sweet ticket hookup for sure) I say it cause the media is wrong about 90% of the speculation this time of year.

Scheider also had a career-low BABIP last year (.225) even though his LD% was slightly above his career average (20.9%).

With average luck he should bounce from horrendous (,502 OPS) to just awful (low .600s).

I don’t know whether to think Utley’s predictions are bold or right in line.

Some people don't think it be what it is, but it do.

Depends on his knees, I think. Could be fair, could be high. Let’s hope it’s low.

by Phrozen on Nov 16, 2011 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Utley’s a big unknown at this point. Those seem slightly optimistic, though, but not outlandishly so.

Utley since 2007

AVG OBP SLG ISO w/OBA bb% k% HR
07 . 332 .410 .566 .234 .420 8.2 14.5 22
08 .292 .380 .535 .244 .391 9.1 14.7 33

11 .259 .344 .425 .166 .344 8.6 10.4 11

He played 132 games in 2007. Am I missing something or is he basically predicting that he’s going to have similar power numbers to that year, walk a little bit more, strike out the same, but get on base a lot less?

He’s predicting a .190 ISO, which is substantially less power than ’07.

Please, Rubes, bring back Jimmy.

by Phrozen on Nov 16, 2011 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

I think rube is Knee deep in Reyes right now and nobody knows it. Or he’s gonna let the Marlins sign him, and trade for Hanley.

I just don’t think hes going to pay Jimmy what jimmy wants, or what another team is willingto give him, which is 4 years at about 12-14mm per.

Reyes would be fine, depending on the actual contract. Hanley… do not want. Not at all.

by Phrozen on Nov 16, 2011 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

Hanley’s really really good

by benderbrodriguez on Nov 16, 2011 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly

depending on the cost in terms of the trade, I’d take hanley over either of them.

He’s 6 months younger than reyes, had an off year last season, but my goodness:

http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=8001&position=SS

and hes guaranteed 15mm per for 3 years. its really the perfect contract.

the real question is why would Miami sign Reyes if they were going to trade Hanley? Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

by Joecatz on Nov 16, 2011 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno. Maybe it’s exaggerated, but his reputation doesn’t sit well with me. A guy who complains to the owner about the manager leading to the manager being fired for doing his job just isn’t right.

And his contract was backloaded, so it’d be $47.5M over the three years. Not a huge difference.

by Phrozen on Nov 16, 2011 5:31 PM EST up reply actions

Charlie wouldn’t put up with Hanleys shit, and neither would Raj. Loria empowers him. While the $$ would be the same the idea of Only having to commit through 2014 is appealing to me over 5 or 6 years for Reyes

Perhaps for the same reason the Braves traded away Yunel Escobar. Perhaps the Marlins don’t like the possibility of potential conflicts that could arise between Hanley and Ozzie Guillen. I don’t see much of an issue there though, I feel like they’d get along just fine.

I’m optimistic on Hanley. Depends on the trade, devil in the details, etc

most of those seem reasonable… but I don’t get the Madson projection at all.

gut prediction: Madson outperforms Papelbon over the course of the next four years

Cool to see Papelbon supporting his new teammate.

But he’s still a douche.

Not really. When you take a team from 65-97 and 5th place one year to 94-68 and a division title the following year, you did something right.

I hate that concept. It basically says the players have a mindset of “Yeah, I’d like to attain the ultimate goal and have my name enshrined in history, but if you guys want it too, you can have it. I’ll live with mediocrity.”

What sort of dipshittery is that, anyway?

Yeah, I guess I kinda want to win the World Series. I mean, it’d be nice and all. No big deal really—I mean, it would take a lot of time, and I do have mow the lawn this weekend, so we’ll see.

Heyman just tweeted that the Schneider deal is $800K + incentives. That’s actually a little lower than I expected.
