Well, Crud: Astros to Fire GM Ed Wade
Agents of middle relievers everywhere are weeping into their beers tonight. Gotta figure Ruben Amaro is pouring one out right now for his former boss and favorite trade partner too. Astros president of baseball operations Tal Smith figures to leave as well.

A sad, sad day for baseball…
Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.

It will be ironically amusing if the 2015 Astros become a contender led by guys Wade acquired. Could happen.
To be fair, Wade could come back as a scouting guy. I wouldn’t trust him to be a GM but he is pretty good at evaluating talent.

I don’t know if talent evaluation is his strong suit, exactly. If I recall correctly, his role as assistant GM was negotiating contracts. We all know he threw a lot of ridiculous contracts at FA middle relievers, but when he negotiated contract extensions with existing players, he generally did a good job. His locking up of Rollins and Utley to affordable long-term deals was a major factor in all the success the Phillies achieved from 2007-2011. And his “bad” contracts were generally not really bad (Burrell, Lieberthal, Abreu).
On talent, I think what he did right was that he was very stingy on trading his best prospects. I’m just not sure if that’s because he has as good eye for talent, or if that was just an overall philosophy he chose to adopt.
