Sadly, I think Brown is still fourth or fifth on the depth chart.

Brown isn’t on the depth chart at all. He isn’t competing to be a major league bench player. He’s going to play everyday in the minors until they decide to give him serious PT in the majors.

I don’t think he’s anything-string. He’s on a schedule where his PT is determined by his readiness, not a comparison between him and the other guys who play the same position.
