Ben Francisco Traded to Toronto
Ben Francisco has been traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. In exchange, the Phillies are getting Frank Gailey, a 26-year old lefty reliever. He's been flitting between single-A and double-A ball since he was drafted in 2007, so...yeah.
We'll miss you, Benny Fresh. That homer in Game 3 of the NLDS was a beauty.

’Cause the one thing we needed most was another low-minors reliever.

I doubt there was much of a market for Benny Fresh.

After the Nix signing, a lot of people thought Benny would end up being non-tendered. At least they got something for him.
I assumed he was gone after signing Nix and I don’t think 4th outfielders return much trade value.

I actually posted that Benny was gone, I think in the Nix thread

In 2015, which one of the following will prove to be a better investment?
(a) Ilya Bryzgalov's contract (b) Ryan Howard's extension (c) Mike Vick's extension (d) Greek bonds from 2009 (e) Papelbon's bloat deal
He is left handed, so he’s a lower-minors version of Mike Zagurski, I guess.

HIgher vowel/consonant ratio in his name.

Bautista, Rasmus, and Thames are at the top of the depth charts right now. Thames looks to be the starting left fielder in the future there, so I guess Francisco’s going to be relegated to a back-up role again.

by TheOrangeCone on Dec 12, 2011 2:53 PM EST up reply actions
seems kind of hasty to relegate Bautista to DH. plus they’ve got Edwin Encarnacion there, who’s probably a better hitter than Francisco (not to mention younger).
I doubt Francisco will be starting, since even outside of Bautista/Rasmus/Thames, they’ve got Rajai Davis and Travis Snider fighting for playing time.
by perfectdepth on Dec 12, 2011 3:17 PM EST up reply actions
Encarnacion is basically Francisco with slightly more power and no glove. They called him E3 for other reasons than his alliterative middle name.
well, the “no glove” is why obviously why he’s DHing.
Encarnacion isn’t a great hitter, but I do think he’s better than Francisco (although the difference is not enormous). he’s a year younger and has a 106 career/115 last year wRC+ compared with a 103 career/94 last year wRC+. I like Francisco, but I think he’s more likely to be a reserve OF than to take ABs from Encarnacion.

They’ve got until tonight to either trade him or tender him a contract.

by TheOrangeCone on Dec 12, 2011 3:43 PM EST up reply actions
since his trade value is apparently nonprospect low minor league LOOGY I’m not sure why that would make sense.
seems much, much more likely that Thames or someone else with actual trade value is the bait and Francisco is the cheap replacement.
by perfectdepth on Dec 12, 2011 4:17 PM EST up reply actions
Maybe, but it makes more sense that Toronto would want him as a supplemental piece in a bigger deal. For example, They’ve been linked to Gio Gonzalez. Oakland could use a fairly cheap every day outfielder. obviously it would take a lot bigger haul, but as part of a PACKAGE deal, to a team that isn’t going to contend, Benny Fresh is a decent option.

what Ruben gets for trading someone shouldn’t be considered a player’s trade value.
All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia

I’m all for Ruben-bashing, but we’re talking about Ben Francisco here. his trade value is nil no matter who’s trying to swap him.

roster - 13 position players
C – Ruiz, Schneider
1B – Howard (DL), Thome
IF – Utley, Rollins, Polanco, Valdez/Martinez, Wigginton
OF – Mayberry, Nix, Victorino, Pence
Who’s the 13th player?
SCOTT PODSEDNIK.
Obviously.

If he has two functional legs. That’s a big if, considering his foot woes last year. Dude, if he’s the fifth outfielder next year, I’m getting a Phillies Podsednik shirsey. I was already considering an Iron Pigs Podsednik shirsey.

OK, LL, first you poach my Bob, now you’re encroaching on my Pods. We’ve got to stop liking the same players.
And before anyone wonders why, Podsednik was on one of my first rotisserie baseball teams when I was in college back in ‘04, when he decided that every base was his and he’d steal them all. I realize he’s not really that good of a baseball player overall, but sometimes even cranky bastards like me can feel affection for a player.

Not a bad call at all. The few things he’s really good for (speed, hustle, maybe bunting) are not available in that bench currently.

I suppose he’s played more center and has a marginally better walk rate over his whole career… yeah, I don’t see much difference.

OK… What am I missing?
You named 14 guys there. Assuming Valdez and Martinez are competing for one spot, what’s the question, exactly?
I think he was saying its either Valdez OR MiniMart
But I agree with you, I think they both make the team and Wigginton is used as the 5th OFer.

Patched the pipe with JB Weld and electrical tape. That should fail about fifteen hours ago, and the plumber will be here in about a month.
Have to replace the carpet, drywall, insulation and studs. Insurance may not cover it as it’s an old (emphasis on OLD) pipe. Thin-walled. Fucking rat-bastards. Occupy AllState.
That’s AllState’s* stand, are you in good hands?

Here's what I'm looking at now
The brown stuff on the studs and on the wall to the right is rot or mildew of some kind mixed with rust from the old radiator that I’ve already ripped out. The odd discolored area under the water meter is some kind of mineral deposit. The damage extends at least across that entire room, but seems to be contained therein.
The carpet is outside in the snow.
I'll miss the Ben Francisco treat.
Thanks for your postseason clutch, Benny! Good luck!

Would you guys call him Exxon?

Interesting. The Orioles non tendered Luke Scott…
Dude had a horrible season last year, and is coming off an injury, but he put up 3.4 war, hit 27 HR’s and had a .902 ops in 2010..

.387 wOBA, too. Wow.
.250 BABIP didn’t help at all, but most of his periphs indicate he just was a little bit unlucky in half a season’s worth of at-bats.

I say add him to the Lazy Susan of First Basemen. Once upon a time, I’d agree that $6.4MM for that age 33 unlucky train wreck would make me edgy too. Now he’s sort of a bargain, huh?
