Every time I engage in this mental exercise, my mind stops on one realization: Hunter Pence is lined up pretty nicely to win the National League MVP this season."

Well, that’s something, at least.

Is that Hunter Pence’s agent?

GMAT verbal section question, Philadelphia sports version.
In 2015, which one of the following will prove to be a better investment?
(a) Ilya Bryzgalov's contract (b) Ryan Howard's extension (c) Mike Vick's extension (d) Greek bonds from 2009 (e) Papelbon's bloat deal

National League Most Valuable Pence?

It was all I could do not to laugh when I first saw this. That ranks right up here with this Casey Feeney gem.

Some people don't think it be what it is, but it do.

So, after mulling this over, it really isn’t as ridiculous as it sounds.

Pence is a decent hitter. He’ll spend much or all of the season in the middle of a (proven to be) productive batting order, so he’ll get lots of RBEYEZ; he has decent power, and could approach 30 HRs, and he can hit for a .300 average, all three of which are numbers that matter. Plus, he’s likely to be on a playoff-bound team (Braun), rather than a nightmarish morass of scum and villainy (Kemp). In short, Pence is probably the most like non-pitcher Phillie to win the MVP.

But it’s still fiendishly implausible.

Meh, even with the crazy high BABIP he had this year he still only managed about 5 WAR. I just don’t see any situation in which he improves upon last year all that much to push him into MVP consideration.

I’m not saying it’s remotely likely just that he has more of a chance than, say, Chooch or Howard.

Plus, compare this guy’s age 28 and age 29 season.

So, basically, what I’m saying is, there’s a chance.

I saw this after I duped the post

God, this was awful. The dupe post, too.

Did you know that the wheel was independently invented by multiple civilizations? So too were human sacrifice and the basic principles of genocide, but I digress.

The takeaway

“Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, and Cole Hamels basically ensure that the Phillies are going to eclipse the 85-win total.”

Sooooo….that makes Pence the MVP!

a few steps up from Valdez, tho’, innit?

It’s not the least likely thing that could happen next year.

yeah, I was playing along with the joke…. in fact, it doesn’t strike me as insane at all that Pence could win an MVP award. He’d have to have a career year, with the offense around him keeping its end of the bargain, and the Phillies remaining winners. On the other hand, let’s not get carried away.
