It is what it is. The good news is that at the budget levels the Phillies are currently at (and will hopefully stay at), it isn’t a team killer. $23 average over five years is too high, but I don’t think very many people would have begrudged him, say, $15 per. So essentially it has the same effect as lowering the Phillies’ future budgets from ($167 + growth/inflation) to ($159 + growth/inflation). Not a good thing, but whatever.
2012
The following positions are filled, for now: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, CF, RF, SP1-4 (Total = $108.35 + Hamels Arb)
Assume bench and bullpen stay same price except Francisco gets raise (Total = $13.35 + Francisco Arb)
The following positions need to be filled: SS (Rollins), LF (Ibanez), SP5 (Oswalt), Closer (Lidge), Setup (Madson). If the budget stays constant (no growth, no inflation), there will be about ($45 – Hamels – Francisco) to work with.
plan
I’d give Hamels a long-term deal: would $17-per be fair? And then let’s say Francisco gets 300 PAs this year and ends up with a $3 mill arb settlement in 2012.
I’d also re-sign Madson to be the closer ($10-per?) and let Lidge walk.
Then I’d try to cut bench/bullpen from $13.35 to $10.00. Seems doable. And let’s say the overall budget will go up by $6.65, to make it a round number.
This would leave $25 mill for SS (Rollins?), LF, SP5 (Oswalt?), and Setup. I’d re-sign Rollins for sure, but I don’t know how I’d allocate the rest. Depends on how certain prospects do, I guess.
Are we assuming Rollins is at a discount than what he currently is at, and if that, how much lower can we expect his salary to be for an aging SS?

I’m just curious as to how much of that 25 million you see Rollins taking up TP

I’m hoping that the Phils can grow a set-up man out of the system and grow a #5 out of the system (letting Oswalt walk would be a kick in the nuts, but even the 4 of Hamels, Lee, Blanton and Halladay would still be the best if not one of the best rotations in baseball

Everyone, please rec this so it stays at the top of the fanposts section for a while.
Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will.
So a good half a year nets an allegedly 39 year old pitcher a 2 year contract with a third option year?
No wonder we have a boarder problem.
Are you talking about Contreras?
And why do we have a boarder problem? All the snowboarders, surfboarders and skateboarders I know are great. Plus the boarders who board in other peoples houses, as well as the boarders who own sawmills and make boards. I suppose we might have a problem with boarders boarding us, but given that they’re likely to be armed only with cutlasses and have peglegs, I’m not worried.
Contreras >> 2010 Baez and cheaper. I still think we need younger and cheaper arms in the pen, a la Madson (or the Braves’ pen). Not resigning Durbin IMO was a good move.
