4 minutes and 37 seconds total time to draft…not sure if that’s good or bad.

Soooooo…I put Scott Podsednik in my auto-pick as a joke…and whaddya know, I got him. How soon can we start drop/adding?

Wow Carl Crawford lasted till the 15th overall pick???? Chase Utley picked at 13th? Cliff Lee 6th overall? Yikes… Looks like it was a very interesting draft…

by FooFighter1124 on Mar 13, 2011 9:40 PM EDT reply actions

there were 18 people

by j reed on Mar 13, 2011 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I can see that yes… What does that have to do with anything?

by FooFighter1124 on Mar 13, 2011 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

It may have caused people to take players they really wanted a little earlier than they normally would, knowing that by the time the snake would get back to them, the player would be gone.

by dannijd on Mar 14, 2011 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Okay I guess that maybe explains Lee, but I was more surprised by Crawford falling that far. I’ve seen him go as high as three in most drafts and never past ninth or tenth. Though I guess this league doesn’t appear to have runs as an offensive category… The fact that this league is 18 teams though makes it most surprising that Utley was taken in round 1 since a first round pick is very valuable. I dunno why someone would wanna risk it on a player whose health is uncertain.

by FooFighter1124 on Mar 14, 2011 4:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I was more than a little stunned he fell to me as well. Unfortunately, runs are not an offensive category, and that may be why he is less valuable. That was the other real surprise to me- I love Utley, but (an I know he was gone before it even got to me) I do not know that I would have taken him in the top half of the second, let alone the first due to his knee injury- too much is unknown both about how much time he is going to miss and how well he is going to play and hold up once he gets back.

by dannijd on Mar 14, 2011 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Frankly, Crawford isn’t that valuable of a player given the offensive statistical categories we are using.

Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will.

by FuquaManuel on Mar 14, 2011 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

The one that shocks me is Utley going so early- I thought the questions surrounding his knee would cause him to fall to me (couldn’t set my draft order :()

by dannijd on Mar 14, 2011 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions

But see, I’m more optimistic about such things. Plus I’m a homer. Plus I’m a fantasy baseball rookie. Plus I don’t think it’s as bad as all that. Plus a team full of zombies should be unstoppable.

by Phrozen on Mar 14, 2011 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions

All in all, I’m pretty happy with my draft.

I think I put together a pretty well-balanced team (given the categories). Strategy-wise, with pitchers, I tried to take advantage of the fact that high-K guys with good FIPs who seemed to be getting overlooked. With offense, I noticed a lot of high-OBP guys with 20+ HR power were still floating around later in the draft. Should be interesting to see if it works out.

Yeah, the definite downside with the CBS drafting board is that CBS ranks aren’t based on your own league’s stat categories, which in some ways makes it a bit opaque. FIP, OBP and HD should be visible/sortable. Since I knew that from last year, it was a bit useful to have a FIP cheatsheet.

by LeepinLizardz on Mar 13, 2011 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I tried to take advantage of that opaqueness. I used fangraphs as my primary cheat sheet. For instance, if FIP was one of the sortable categories in CBS’s interface, I don’t think I would have been able to get guys like Shields and Hammel as late as I did. I kind of like it that way because it forces you to do more research.

Question
So when will MLB officially declare DL and active status of players. And I’m assuming that as we are no longer allowed to use the spots reserved for the DL as an extended bench, then the same holds for the bench being used to stash DL players.

by j reed on Mar 13, 2011 9:51 PM EDT reply actions

Using the bench to stash DL players makes sense though. We only have one DL spot, and what if (in my case) both Ellsbury and…I dunno…Torii Hunter are injured? I should be able to put one on the DL and one on the bench, yes? Am I reading your question correctly?

yes, thanks for steppin up FM. I also want to see a bit more explanation of how DL/reserve/drop&add/waiver is supposed to work, perhaps as another post. One upside to an early draft is that we have time to spell this out.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 13, 2011 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

You can use your bench for DL players. If you want to burn spots on your active roster for players who aren’t playing, that’s up to you.

But you can’t use the DL to stash players who are active.

OK, that’s clear, and fairer too, with 18 teams this year. It forces the drop.

by Wet Luzinski on Mar 13, 2011 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

But the bench isn’t active. It’s scores no points. Only your two utility players, 3 OFs, 1 catcher, 1 2nd basemen, 1 3rd basemen, 1 1st basemen, and your rotation of starters (up to five) and relievers (up to 4) are eligible to score points.

by j reed on Mar 13, 2011 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

The stats don’t accumulate, but it is a part of the “active roster.” Your bench holds players who you are just not using at the moment. If you have a day where one of your starters is not playing, then you can use your bench players. If you want to weaken the depth of your team by using the bench for players who are on the DL, that’s your prerogative. Also, it wouldn’t be fair to punish people for having injured players in the case that their two DL spots are already filled and another one of their starters gets hurt.

The real issue is people using the DL to hang on to players who aren’t injured. That’s not fair because.

Man, that was pretty fun. Kind of unsure how I feel about my team – I definitely outsmarted myself a couple of times in the autodraft, but there has to be some utility in having two pretty great utility guys. If my infield stays healthy, I’ll be happy; if not, hopefully the holds and k/tip I was shooting for will come through. Either way, I’m looking forward to the inevitable crisis of opening day. Thanks again, FM.

I ran projections for the year using CBS' data and here are the results

My projected season-ending team standings based on CBS’ 2011 projections (by “place” – 1 = first place):

BudVgr 8.5
CoburnsCud 17
Cormican 6
dannijd 10
FearTheTur 15.5
FM 2
jreed 1
JoseNtC 7
LeepinLiz 3
LndnPhllie 5
EREX21 11
PhillsandT 13.5
RTP 12
Phrozen 8.5
TMAir 18
Trev223 15.5
Walcott 13.5
WLuzinski 4

The inaccuracies include things like:
1. Counting all players offensive stats, when reserve players won’t count when not played.
2. Injuries
3. Waiver wires
4. Inaccurate projections

Best pitching? JoseNTC (until Halladay’s robotic arm falls off)
Best hitting?Wet Luzinski (until Miguel Cabrera breaks his liver)

That is why, folks, we play the games. It’ll be interesting to see how it pans out.

by Trev223 on Mar 14, 2011 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

I think my pitching will be better, too. Tyler Clippard will have more than 14 holds/saves, for starters. I also will never let Masterson hurt my FIP by starting more than spot starts or to replace an injured starter.

The inclusion of reserves screws things up quite a bit. WL has a lot of boppers that may be hard to get on the field all at the same time, yet all their projected stats count.

Relax folks. There’s time to panic around May 15th or so.

by Walcott on Mar 14, 2011 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

For hitting, you need OBP, steals, and slugging. Barmes and Aaron Hill are projected to kill your OBP, for instance. Fiddle with your line up for tradeoffs between OBP and the other things you need.

For pitchng, you need bullpennery and to avoid giving up so many walks. It may be a simple matter of MIke Leake or Brett Cecil start too many games for you. Pick their spots during the season. You’ll be fine.

Why look'st thou so?' -"With my crossbow
I shot the Albatross."

by RememberthePhitans on Mar 14, 2011 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s what I figured. Hopefully Barmes won’t see any significant time ever, and if I find a more reasonable backup MI I’ll be going to him directly. I’m actually not super concerned about bullpennery, because I remembered holds halfway through the draft and went for Mike Adams and Kevin Jepsen.

by Walcott on Mar 14, 2011 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. People were overvaluing saves in the draft. I managed to get Marmol after a few closers had already been selected, which I was thrilled by.

My strategy going in was not to select any closers early on unless I could get a good deal for Marmol (and only Marmol) and wait until the middle and late rounds to fill out my bullpen with high K/9 and/or low BB/9 guys. No sense in chasing saves if holds were going to be worth just as much.

by dannijd on Mar 14, 2011 1:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Look for trading partners. I would be interested in Victorino or a a reliever. You need FIP and Strikeouts — starting pitching, basically. Davis, Guthrie, Bergesen, and Corriea are all high FIP starters or ones who don’t K much or both. Johan Santana is hurt and out till June-ish. Fixing your roster is going to involve finding sucky offenses and swapping for a starter or finding someone who will need saves/holds.
