Your 2011 Phillies Opening Day Roster: Orr, Martinez, Herndon In; Stutes, Young Out
The Phillies made their final 25 man roster decisions after this afternoon's exhibition game against the Pirates. After the dismissal of Luis Castillo earlier this afternoon, Michael Martinez became a shoo-in. In somewhat of a surprise, Pete Orr -- who managed a triple this afternoon, one of the Phillies two hits -- was selected. Apparently, Orr's ability to play third base persuaded Charlie Manuel, in light of Placido Polanco's wonky elbow.
As expected, Chase Utley, Domonic Brown, and Brad Lidge will all open the year on the Disabled List.
Despite an impressive spring, the Phillies (did the right thing and) sent reliever Michael Stutes to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, along with utility man Delwyn Young.

In other words, huge win for Team PhilsandThrills

Glad they went with Herndon over Stutes though.
I didn’t pay much attention to Orr, so what exact;y does he bring to the table?

Seriously though, what in the world puts Orr over Castillo?

Heyman
#phillies apparently noticed that castillos range is approx 2 foot, resulting in release. Valdez a better stopgap option.
Honestly, I’d like Castillo to met him and just clock in the face a few times.

I think if I met Heyman I’d be tempted to smack him around myself.

I’ve met Heyman, he used to not be a jerk. Getting the SI job got to his head.

Seems like all the defensive metrics thought he was slightly positive as well.

Excluding Kendrick, though he could certainly prove himself in a relief role.

Orr probably would accept one now, I imagine.

And Valdez wouldn’t? Was Valdez’s spot guaranteed before Castillo arrived? Castillo certainly has the leverage skill wise, the only difference being Castillo wasn’t called the informal MVP of the team last year.
I don’t think so but then again it depends on what is defined as “5 years of professional service”.
If a player is on the 40-man roster and not the active 25 man roster for any part of more than three seasons (in which he spent 20 or more total days of service in the minors), he is out of options and may not be assigned to the minors without first clearing waivers. However, if a player has less than 5 years of professional experience, he may be optioned to the minors in a fourth season without being subject to waivers.
No. J remember when J-Roll got hurt last year that one of the problems with bringing Valdez up was that he was out of options and would have to be DFA’ed if sent back down.

Sorry, but nope.
Totals: TGP 753, Nation 1,095.
ZWR: 879, PhuturePhils 401.
All on the ZWR train.

They have a real shot. I’m guessing they’re going to get more votes from PhuturePhils voters than PhilliesNation will be getting from us.
It doesn’t work that way.
People vote for every matchup if they want, so most votes are probably not unique to one blog.

I thought you were saying ZWR would get votes from TGP voters, which are mostly the same voters, as opposed to saying ZWR would get votes from PP.

Also if I really thought ZWR or Philles Nation were better, I would, but I don’t. This blog is great. From Trev 223’s dialetics (I read that piece and found myself an hour later reading about Hegel; I’ve never read anything about Hegel in my life until then), to our doggerel, to our game day blogs, to Taco Pal’s Logic Thunderdome, to baseball history, to our unrepentant support of advanced metrics, to the nod from Neyer, to our art, to our snausages – we are just fucking better. For me to vote for either one is conceding that we’re not and I can’t do that.

I love ZWR and check it frequently. The problem is, I consider it an entertainment blog more than a Sports blog. If James had won, I would have gladly voted Phuture Phillies over anyone except TGP (though, I’ll admit, it would be a tough decision, as I really think both blogs are top shelf and info packed).
Like J, I will likely sit out voting the final round. Still, good luck to ZWR, it’s nice to see that site getting love.
Well shitburgers. Oh well.
Clearly we didn’t have enough grit and hustle, and we obviously didn’t want it nearly enough.
Plus, we didn’t know how to win, or have enough veteran-ness.
Where is Aaron Rowand when we need him?
Someone needs to “teach us how to win”.
(;^))
Honestly, I had no idea Phillies Nation was such a big deal. Before coming here, I had heard of Crashburn Alley and Phuture Phillies, and I’ve heard of Zoo With Roy more recently. Phillies Nation? I’m sure I heard of it once or twice, but had no idea until now that it was so popular.
I had no idea either until they got a #1 seed in last year’s Phield. Up until then, I had always assumed that Beerleaguer was the most popular Phillies blog.
Phillies Nation is a slow loading blog and is wonky. The commenters there leave something to be desired at times. I used to post at Beerleaguer, but I actually started at ESPN. Good Lord. Talk about mouthbreathers.

There’s a little more interaction here than on either Phillies Nation or Beerleaguer. I think it’s due to the SBN site commenting setup and the fact that posters here are held a little more accountable, at least IMO.

Yep. But when I was at BL, the posting community wasn’t really that large. That was 2008, though. That was a fun year regardless.

Before I found TGP I used to go to on Phillies Nation. It’s a mix of of traditionalists and some sabr minded people with the emphasis leaning more toward the traditionalists but that applies more to the commentariat than the writers (at least when I was there). The site writers often used advanced metrics in write-iups and articles. There was a decent number of traditionalists with good baseball sense i.e. refused to endorse the notion that Cole Hamels lacked mental toughness and that Pedro Feliz had to go but there was also your fair share of philly.comers who wanted to trade Hamels for Bobby Jenks and a some magic beans. Overall the commentators were supportive of the team and not outright Negadelphians. But the blog format is much like Crashburn Alley’s – nowhere near as dynamic as SB Nation’s blogs and as doubleh noted slow loading and wonky (lots of strange puter behavior after you left that site.)
Let's just say
Thanks for your support, and playoffs are a crapshoot. Measurable progress from last year! Kind of heady stuff to be part of a TOP BLOG.
But alas, the vox clickuli have spoken. And rest assured that none of those scabs who voted PN are getting their potholes filled anytime soon. And honestly, perhaps flying just under the radar when it comes to such contests is the best place to be to sustain our nerdy funhouse culture. Imagine what winning the thing would have been like if, in turn, the mainstream media picked up the story and started clicking around to find either Trev223’s epic dialectic post or, on the other hand, Veteran Clubhouse Presence.
As for me, me and my unbalanced brain will go out voting ZWR.

So seeing as Opening Day is Friday
When are we gonna have our Over/Under/Never thing? I haven’t missed it somehow, have I?
Not sure which of the blog lords top men is responsible for that (WL?) but I’ll happily help if desired.
Post is coming. Phrozen, I could use some help in crunching the numbers to award last year’s winner.

not that I'm a huge Castillo fan
but man, I would rather have him than Orr. am I missing something, or are Orr and Martinez basically the same player? how many free-swinging, light-hitting, defense-first infielders does one team need?
or D. Young for that matter if not Castillo.

we better see a lot of double switches is all I’m saying. gotta keep those guys busy.
by perfectdepth on Mar 30, 2011 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions
The issue might be that there’s no obvious Pat Burrell type player in the infield to make a defensive substitution for in the 8th inning of every game like we saw in ’08 with the Beard.
Well, aside from Ryan Howard, but I don’t see him getting pulled unless the game’s not even close, and if I’m reading things right, most of the glut of utility infielders are middle infielders, which means Gross Load.
i like the bench
defense and speed count quite a bit for ss/2b/3b/cf backups. plus martinez and mayberry (and francisco are at the right age to have career years. plus ibanez/mayberry and francisco/gload have the potential to be excellent platoons.
