A brief review of the first series.
The Phillies have the highest BABIP in all of baseball, at .398.
However they also have the 2nd highest Line Drive rate at 25.6%, behind only the Tigers, so while they may be benefitting from some hits falling in, they've also been hitting the ball hard (thanks, Stros!).
This is not uncommon for a 3-game stretch, but it's been feast or famine in the early going, with 4 hitters with OPS over 1.000, and 3 others below .650. Wilson Valdez is in the middle at .819, although that is a relative feast for him:
| AVG | OBP | SLG | OPS | |
| Feasting | ||||
| Howard | .538 | .500 | .846 | 1.346 |
| Francisco | .462 | .500 | .769 | 1.269 |
| Polanco | .417 | .500 | .583 | 1.083 |
| Rollins | .500 | .571 | .500 | 1.071 |
| Valdez | .364 | .364 | .455 | .819 |
| Starving | ||||
| Ruiz | .200 | .333 | .300 | .633 |
| Ibanez | .182 | .357 | .273 | .630 |
| Victorino | .250 | .333 | .250 | .583 |
It's too early to be looking at BABIP etc, suffice it to say for those feasting it's very high, and for those starving it's pretty low.
The starters of course are off to a very good start:
(stats from 2010's first 3 starts, by Halladay, Hamels, and Kendrick, are in parentheses)
- 2.84 ERA (4.50)
- 0.79 WHIP (1.44)
- 23 Ks and only 1 BB in 19 IP (16 and 6 in 16 IP)
- average game score: 64 (49)
