GENERIC GAME RECAP TEMPLATE 2011: OPPONENT [INT=/>1], Phillies 0

PHILADELPHIA, PA - MAY 22: Roy Oswalt #44 of the Philadelphia Phillies "looks on" against the Texas Rangers at Citizens Bank Park on May 22, 2011 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Rangers won 2-0. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)

Attn: The Good Phight staff -- Please see below sample text for a Generic 2011 Phillies game recap template, suitable for general use.

WARNING: DO NOT PUBLISH prior to merging dynamic data into open fields.  Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you! - WC 3/31/11

The Phillies dropped another low-scoring contest today to the [OPPOSING TEAM], finding themselves completely shut down by [AVERAGE MAJOR LEAGUE STARTING PITCHER] despite yet another strong outing from [PHILLIES WELL-COMPENSATED STARTING PITCHER], losing the game by a score of [INTEGER </= 3] to [INTEGER </= 2].  All on a day when the Phillies learned that [KEY PLAYER] would be unavailable for [INTEGER >/= 1] game due to [FREAK INJURY].

[OPPONENTS' STARTER] held the Phillies to just [INTEGER </= 5] hits over [INTEGER >/= 6] innings pitched.  The Phillies managed only a few small threats.  After [SOMETIMES COMPETENT PHILLIES BATTER] reached first base on a [ONE/NO] out [SINGLE/WALK] in the [INNING >3/<8], the Phillies' soon found the rally quashed after a double play grounder from [MISCAST AND OVERMATCHED UTILITY INFIELDER OR 4TH/5TH OUTFIELDER].  Later, in the [INNING >7]th inning, with a runner on base, [OPPONENTS' STARTER OR LEFTY SPECIALIST] induced a big strikeout of [PHILLIES MIDDLE OF ORDER LEFTY BATTER], effectively ending the Phillies' day offensively.

[PHILLIES ACE] once again pitched well despite receiving no support, allowing just [INTEGER </= 2] runs over [INTEGER >/= 7] innings pitched.

The Phillies resume play tomorrow, hoping that the team can muster just enough offensive support to win the game for [OTHER PHILLIES ACE].

Dom Brown

I didn’t see the game, but THEY DIDN’T START BROWN!?! WHY DID THEY BRING HIM UP!?!

DO THEY THINK HE BECOMES A BETTER HITTER BY NOT PLAYING?! IS HE NOT THE FUTURE OF THIS TEAM!? ARE AT BATS NOT IMPORTANT?!

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH OUR COACHING?! WHY DO THEY LOVE THE SCRUBS SO MUCH?!!??!?

by Senor Octubre on May 22, 2011 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

They brought him up because Shane died- killed by the troll that lives under second base.

Brown did not start today because the organization thinks that it is a bad idea for him to play against left handed pitching right now, never mind the fact that he did not have serious splits in the minor leagues. At bats are indeed important, but they want to start out with getting him to hit right handed pitching and progress from there.

Our coaching is trying to develop Domonic one step at a time, so that he becomes our future. I am not sure if it is the right thing to do, but this coaching staff developed Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, and Shane Victorino. I am going to guess they know a little bit about how to develop a young hitter (not that they have done it recently…)

PS… In the future, please disable the caps lock before typing your post. I am sure that you did not intend to yell at us.

You mean, the staff that developed a good hitter, a hitter with the most strikeouts in baseball, a five-hole hitter who was almost always off when the guy in front of him was off, and Shane – who I love but know he has serious issues at the plate.

That staff? You mean, that’s the staff I should have confidence in? The staff that loves to give a green light to hitters in a 3-0 count with the bases loaded when we need runs? The staff that encourages first pitch swings to ensure the opposing pitcher can get through an inning with three pitches? (I’ve seen Phillies games where the opposing pitcher eeks out of the first inning with no runs but 30 pitches, and by the sixth inning is at 60 pitches.)

This staff? You want me to have confidence in this staff? With what evidence? And why are we going to protect Brown from left handed hitters? Is he a man or not?

It's in his wheelhouse!!

I think those hitters that you just disparaged so have also done a lot of good things. There is a lovely pattern with sluggers- home runs and strikeouts tend to go together (if they learn to walk once in a while they can essentially be 3 true outcome hitters). I think they won a World Series a few years back, and went to another one just a couple of years ago, and that is not something you do by buying scratchoff tickets. Are they perfect, no- it would be lovely if basic concepts of plate discipline could be taught to some of our hitters, but you can’t argue with the results they have produced.

If you want evidence, go to Citizen’s Bank Park- you don’t even have to walk in the building, just go walk in the parking lot behind Center Field and look up- flying there is all the proof I need that this organization can raise a few hitters.

PS- Thank-you for turning your caps lock off!

Offense, offense, where are you?

by dannijd on May 23, 2011 12:15 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I forgot to answer the last of your question, so here goes...

It is not so much about protecting as about developing. It is easiest for a hitter to see a pitch being thrown by a pitcher who throws using the opposite hand of the side they hit from. This is why switch hitters generally (with the exception of knuckleballers in some cases) hit from the opposite side of the pitcher (I.e. hitting lefty against a right handed pitcher). So Brown will start out with the pitchers he is most likely to have success against- this is good for both sides- Brown is more likely to have success and thus stay confident, which is good for both sides in the long run, and a right handed outfielder will take pitchers he should have more success with. As time goes on and Brown has success, then it will be time to move on to something more difficult- one step at a time.

Offense, offense, where are you?

by dannijd on May 23, 2011 12:27 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

1. There should never be leniency for sloppy and poor play and performance because a completely different team won a World Series. The Howard who won in 2008 wasn’t the same Howard in 2009, and especially not the same Howard in 2010.

2. I am fully aware of the differences between the left and right side of the plate when it comes to left and right handed pitchers. Brown is not some baby though. He will have to hit left handed pitching eventually – and he will have to get through a slump eventually. Last year we had him up, and he slumped. I do believe we protected him as well. There’s no way to ease a player into the game or into hitting. Beyond that, he is a better hitter. He is wasted on the bench learning how to chew gum.

Your consistent mentioning of my venting through caps lock is immature and uncalled for. Does it make you feel like a better person that you don’t use caps lock? I didn’t write in caps lock “I AM LOOKING TO ARGUE WITH DANNIJD”, I was venting. I am a fan, and a much tougher fan than you who seem to be pleased with our recent performance. The team is playing beyond poor. I was at the game last night, I’ve watched every game that I am able to this year. I am a fan, I am attentive, and I am upset. If you have a problem with that because Brett Myers was walked by CC Sabathia, that’s fine. But you are not a fan. And from the tone of your posts, your “it’s okay guys, they won in 09” input is not appreciated. Do you know it’s 2011? 2008 is getting farther and farther away. There are big, big issues facing the Phillies currently. Either wake up and notice them before you post here, or be prepared to be embroiled in arguments when you insist everything is okay because we have a few new flags in the outfield.

Also you asked

This staff? You want me to have confidence in this staff? With what evidence? And why are we going to protect Brown from left handed hitters? Is he a man or not?
when you were discussing player development, to which she replied in a perfectly resonable manner. This staff (mostly) developed the players who won the World Series in 2008 into the hitters THEY WERE IN 2008. And 2009. And since then. And since you were discussing player development her response was accurate and reasonable. Aside from the whole debacle with Brown at the end of last season I think the development of young hitters has been a strong point of this team, as dannijd pointed out with relevant observations. So why don’t you calm down before you fly off the handle with how much more of a FAN you are. No one here gives a shit. Finally, I believe that how many PAs Dom gets against LHP has little to nothing to do with how much of a man he is.

by FearTheTurtIe on May 23, 2011 2:41 AM EDT up reply actions

No. The staff prior to 2008 developed those hitters. The staff after 2008 developed them into what they are today. Something is amiss. Things have changed. Unless you want to look at the numbers and tell me they are the same.

What “young hitters” have the Phillies developed in recent history? Please, show me this list.

by Dr. Steve on May 23, 2011 2:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Last time I checked, Charlie was manager in 2008. And 2007. And the 3 years before that, all which happen to be the years in which Utley, Howard, etc were coming up. He plays a large part in the development of hitters, as a former hitting coach. He also happens to make day-to-day line-up decisions, which is what you are currently bitching about. And since his track record shows that he handles hitter development pretty well, I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. He’s EARNED it. That concept seems alien to you. Also, you should probably figure out what the term “recent history” means, since by almost all accounts 2006-08 qualifies as pretty fucking recent.

by FearTheTurtIe on May 23, 2011 3:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Howard and Utley came up in 2004 and 2003. And I do not think they learned to hit in the Majors. You don’t get called up because you may be a good hitter, you get called up because you ARE a good hitter. Already.

How do you learn how to hit major league pitching in the majors? Sit on the bench and watch? Hit only opposite throwing pitchers? I mean, how does hitting only right handers help Brown? Say he goes on an 11 game hitting streak solely against right handers, including relief pitchers. Then he faces a left handed hitter and strikes out. Do we assume his confidence is shattered? If we assume he can, correctly, handle that situation, than he should be able to correctly handle striking out against a left handed hitter all game.

And I mean, where is the pressure on Brown to step his game up when the whole team manages three hits? Right now would be the ideal situation for him. It’s not like he’s holding the team back – he has a giant chance to be the hero. Anything he does will be magnified against his teammates. Going 1-4 on this team is a miracle at the moment.

Right now is the perfect time to put Brown in full time. We can’t baby him any longer. He already is questionable in when he was called up. The only qualm anyone could have over Brown is his recent injury, but I’ll good faith assume that is 100% healed. His time is now. The more we delay it with this kind of babying, the longer it will take Brown to settle into a true every day rhythm. Unless we expect him to be a career pinch hitter, he needs work in the field, work at the plate, and work in the locker room with the press.

He needs to be a MLB Player. I don’t care who it is making the decision, it’s the wrong decision. I feel pretty confident in Charlie’s ability to make poor decisions, and anyone who follows this team should as well. There’s a reason my phone blows up with texts when Herndon is put in.

What is this? Why is it a crime to criticize this team all of a sudden? I do my fair share of “they’re in first place” defending daily, but there is plenty of room for criticism in that first place title.

what how

http://www.thegoodphight.com

by WholeCamels on May 23, 2011 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I seem to remember being told by this same organization:

- That Chooch tweaked his back and would be back in a few days- 15 days and a DL stint later he returned.

- That Victorino’s hamstring was just a little sore- a pinch hit sac bunt later he was on the DL, return unknown.

- That Oswalt’s back was going to be fine and he would be back, ready to start Saturday… A rather fun night with KK while Oswalt was on the DL and a rehab stint later he returned.

So now the Rangers have killed Ryan Madson. A final, great ninth inning was played by him on Saturday, after which he has went to the afterlife. Which is a sad thing to be sure. But games will be played in his absence, and there is a good chance that these games will involve save opportunities. So the question is, who will handle them?

That would involve KK being here next year.

Offense, offense, where are you?

Holy triple post Batman!

Seems like you need a better phone or a better wireless company or something.

Better wifi probably (or a return to not giving a rats behind whether AT&T likes how much data I use).

Actually, I think it would involve KK being here next year.

On the [UPBEAT EMOTIONAL METAPHOR], the [NL EAST OPPONENTS] and [BRAVES/LOLMETS] all lost today, which means the Phils didn’t [LOSE ANY GROUND/FALL FURTHER BEHIND].

Empires Fall

The Phils have had a great run over the last 5 years. And this season still holds plenty of promise. with their pitching and defense. But empires often begin to rot from the inside before the inhabitants realize what is happening. This team is increasingly sclerotic…Nagging injuries are up, power numbers down. I think there is no question but that the Phils will make the playoffs and likely win the division this year. But a steep decline in the next couple of years is more than possible unless Phils can groom position players to inject some needed youth into this team. Eventually, the Marlins and the Braves will convert their young talent into consistent winners. Maybe not this year, but soon. Phils need to keep pace.

Maybe you felt you had balance the otherwise downbeat tone, but I think it’s way too early to say this.

Celebrating 50 years of slightly more Phils wins than losses: 1962-2011

Should have chosen a different phrase

I meant to say that the Phils are poised to once again win the division or at least make the playoffs. You are right to say it is way to early to say anything with certainty.

Anyway, my real point was to note the obvious. The Phils need an injection of youth…soon…particularly at the power positions.
