It's no secret that Roy Halladay likes to pitch deep into games and that Charlie Manuel likes to let him pitch deep into games. But should he? I've long felt that Cholly can be over-confident with his Ace and a few games this year (namely the early Washington game, Florida recently, and the other day againsy Cincy) have bolstered my opinion.
So I looked through some boxscores and calculated that Doc's ERA in his final inning of a game this year stands at 9.58 while it is 1.34 for all other innings. All pertinent caveats apply, namely regarding sample size and the use of ERA as an accurate evaluator, but the numbers do nothing to disprove the idea that Manuel could be a little quicker with the hook - even with Halladay.
