Reyes to Cinci. Interesting.

A major improvement over his recent efforts, especially the 7.0 IP, his season high.

The crucial thing to hope for with Reyes is for him to not get signed by the Braves this offseason. Ideally, he gets traded to some relatively big-market team from outside the division that gets him to sign an extension. Also, hopefully that team won’t give the Mets too much in the way of good prospects.
Great point – his departure has the potential to cut both ways. The terms I heard Stark tossing around (5 yr/$100M) sounded too rich for Atlanta, but stranger things have happened.

A lot depends on (a) Chipper and (b) what they decide to do with their rotation.
As of now, once you factor in arbitration-eligible and minimum-salary players, it looks like they’re going to have about $80-85 million locked up next year. Their current payroll is $91 million, so I think it’s reasonable to anticipate that it might go as high as $100 million next year. In which case they’d have $15-20 million to play with to acquire a SS and a CF and fill out their bench and bullpen.
But if Chipper retires, that would free up another $14 million (although it would also open up another need, at 3B/LF depending on Martin Prado).
They also have $24 million locked up in Derek Lowe and Tim Hudson. But they have seven potential starters: Lowe, Hudson, Hanson, Jurrjens, Beachy, Minor, and Teheran. If they’re smart, they could find a way to shed one or both of the veterans and free up more money to go after a SS.
Reyes would be an absolutely perfect fit for them. He’s also the only really good SS available this offseason other than Jimmy Rollins (who will hopefully be extended before hitting the open market). If they get him, they could very easily go into 2012 as the legitimate favorites to win the division. It would be really nice if Chipper decides to stick around for another year and that the Braves mismanage their rotation situation. Chipper’s still a good player but he isn’t worth $14 million anymore, and considering his stature, there’s no way the Braves will be able to not allow him to be the starting 3B if that’s what he wants to do.
Reyes is going to want $$$$. If M_ts deal himthey are going to want top prospects. Braves do have a good farm system, but would they be able to keep him.
"We are the Borg. Resistance is futile."
I don’t think the Braves will trade for him but they might go after him on the FA market if he’s available. I haven’t heard any rumors along those lines, but it’s too early for rumors of that sort anyway, and it just makes a lot of sense in terms of what they need.
was that from Fox? because their inexplicable love affair with the Giants means they want every decent player who comes up in trade/free agent talk to go to the Giants.

Baseball Today (podcast) was discussing these rumors when they came out (particularly Sabean and Ownership’s denials) and said that it was highly unlikely that the Giants would have the pieces to make the trade work out. There is not a ton of talent in the Giants farm system beyond Belt, and if I remember right one other player, and these are pieces the Giants are not going to want to give up, particularly for a player who would only be a rental.
Offense, offense, where are you?
Are you sure that wasn’t David Lee Roth??

At first, I thought the obscenities were artistic in nature.

Weird. I’ve been to an Avril Lavigne concert and she was pretty low-key temperament-wise. A majority of the crowd knew all the lyrics to her songs, so it was kind of like a giant sing-along. It was fun.

Well, damn. 1 foot less and that was a long out.

I think the best hope for the Reds is if Fredi Gonzalez makes the mistake of bringing Kimbrel in to face Votto and Bruce in the 9th instead of Venters.
Kimbrel’s good against lefties but he’s capable of giving up a longball to one of those guys. Extremely unlikely with Venters.
The scene is set.

Seems like a questionable decision to send Cueto back out there for the 8th when he already had 100 pitches.
Dusty even wears out his pen warming up.

They teach you to be louder and more emphatic the closer the play is. But you have ump relatives, right?

Kimbrel’s probably better off pitching around him. Odds of Fred Lewis or Ramon Hernandez getting a single might be lower than the odds of Bruce getting an XBH.
Not the best AB by Bruce there.

Damn that ballpark looks filled? Anyone know attendence (sp) tonight?
"We are the Borg. Resistance is futile."
Pretty weak for Memorial Day weekend.
There are worse fans out there than Braves fans, but they’re clearly below-average.
Humbug. In other news, check out my massive Wall O’ Text Bullpen post.
