Wow, that Schmidt article is great. I’d love to see more from MJS.

Definitely- makes Posada’s hanging in there make a lot more sense. I hope to read more from him.

So apparently DC bloggers/reporters are still pissy that Phillies fans “take over” Nationals Park whenever they are in town. Here is a video on the interwebz of a Phillies who caught Espinosa’s home run ball and then threw it back. Not sure if it works or not, I can’t see it from work, stupid blocked domain.
At the end of the day, I wish the reporters/bloggers/media would lay the blame where it belongs instead of bashing fans for wanting to see their team play. Especially when you consider that they have to foot the bill for the gas and drive on arguably the worst Interstate in the history of Interstates just to get to the game. Oh and did I mention Nationals Park is kind of lame?
"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Jean-Luc Picard
Meh, gives them something else to write about besides their current team failures/status. True, they should point out that there are so many tickets available for rival fans, but, hey, Philly sports media rarely lets facts get in the way of a good story. Why should anyone else?
What kind of plane is it? Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big ol' Tylenol.
yeah, I live in DC, and the general atmosphere is not very fond of Phillies fans. I do have to agree that it seems like a lot of the Phillies fans who come out at Nationals Park basically show up to act like assholes.
to me, if you’re watching a game at the rival’s stadium, you should tone down the jackassery. doesn’t matter if it’s in DC and the fans are 75% Phils supporters (probably a conservative estimate) or if it’s in Yankee Stadium and you’re the only guy wearing red. it’s just bad form.

I feel that’s true of almost any fanbase who travels. Met fans in the early 2000’s in Philly, Red Sox fans everywhere—quite a few of them show up so they can be jerks. I don’t get the impetus, but it doesn’t really impress me.

true
it certainly is not limited to Phillies fans. I guess it’s sorta like not shaving when you’re on vacation.

I know a lot of folks think it’s awesome when Phillies fans take over other stadia, but I find it sort of embarassing, truthfully. It’s confusing for one, because I forget I’m watching an away game or I hear cheering and I think something bad has happened to the Phils and then I look up and see the Phils have just scored or gotten a big out. Mainly, you just know there are people there acting a fool, waving their Phillies shirts in other people’s faces and giving them more fuel for their “all Phillies fans are assholes” fire. No way of knowing whether or not these are real Phillies fans or just bandwagon hoppers going to the park just to be seen or what, but it really isn’t representative of the real everyday fan so much as it is a side effect of a successful team.
This is not to say fans shouldn’t travel to see their team play: I just think there are rules by which to abide and acting like it’s “your house” isn’t the way to do it. Maybe I’m more sensitive to this issue from all the Met fan invasions in Philly, IDK. I just hated their faces being in the crowd so I was already predisposed to disliking them.

About Teddy...
I have an hypothesis about why Teddy never wins the presidents’ race: he’s representative of the Nationals. They’re not going to let him win until they win a World Series.

Awwww… Maybe if Teddy were allowed to win… Nah, still be the gNats.

They won’t let him win for the same reason they should never let the leads hook up in a series (like in Cheers and Moonlighting). After Teddy finally wins, no one will ever care about the Pres races again. (not that anyone really cares now, mind you)
It’s the big tease.

The presidents’s race is actually my favorite of the different mascot races around baseball, of course I’m a huge US history nerd. The trend as a whole has grown stale though, as evidenced by the Arizona Diamondbacks having a “legends” race.

Legends? What is it Luis Gonzalez, Randy Johnson and Eric Byrnes?
I also love History, but the (insert poorly paid college student in oversized costume here) races are so derivative. I’m fine with Milwaukee’s encased meat races because that’s their thing, every one else is just advertising that lack of creative ideas and calling it a race.
how have I never heard of this before? astoundingly tacky.

This must be what a LA Clippers Dream Camp would be like. I can imagine it now “Come play with Clippers legends like Tim Thomas, Sam Cassell, Ron Harper and Michael Olowakandi. Of course no Clippers experience would be complete without being derided with racial epithets from owner Donald Sterling. Hurry and sign up now, before this fills up and Mr. Sterling denies you housing for this camp.”
In similarly appalling news, the D-Backs retired Luis Gonzalez’s number.
They have no history, but instead of trying to build one over time, they invented one instead. That franchise is the sports equivalent of a faux-Tuscan McMansion in a newly built subdivision out somewhere in Scottsdale.
I don’t really blame them for retiring Gonzalez’s number. he had a great 5-year run for them from 1999-2003, averaging a .969 OPS and more than 5 WAR/season. and he was a big part of their 2001 WS win, of course. it’s not like they’re retiring blatantly undeserving players like the aforementioned Byrnes or, I don’t know, Tony Womack or someone.
I agree but still find it strangely fascinating that in their short history they have been able to put together such good teams. Winning the World Series in their fourth year of existence? How is that possible? And then to reload a few years after Randy and Schilling leave and they won the NL West again in 2007. And this year they are one of the early season surprise teams. I imagine Arizona must be nice for baseball in the spring but as a summer sport it’s hard to get out and play it when its 110 degrees.

Not to toady up to management or anything, but as an added link: superlative first Notgraphs post, FM.
Also, unrelated and from one academic to another, nice CV.
interesting
1. Placido Polanco is leading NL 3B in the all-star voting.
2. Placido Polanco is also leading NL 3B in WAR.
Victorino would probably be leading NL CF’s in WAR if he had stayed healthy.

I’m surprised to see Matt Kemp doing so poorly (per FG at least), but wow, UZR really hates him. total zone isn’t nearly as harsh, though.

So is it just me or is the pitching staff being used right now as if it were the stretch run? Between Worley being sent down and his start being skipped and Bastardo being used as a LOOGY yesterday, this seems more in line with how we would expect the pitching staff to be used in the late season or in the playoffs. Maybe with this being a soft spot on the schedule the organization sees this as an opportunity to put some distance between the Phillies and the Marlins and Braves in the standings.
