It would be nice to see him back, but if he can’t throw low-90s, he better start learning a knuckler.
I actually wonder about this. Lidge was barely ticking 90 down the stretch last year, but he was reasonably effective nonetheless (~3.8 xFIP, ~2.4 FIP, last two months). Would 89 be so different from 90? Maybe – I know every mph counts when you’re down there. But then, as long as he can command his fastball, maybe not.
Lidge is a pretty unique pitcher. Hardly anyone throws a slider quite like his – it’s really one of the great trick pitches in the game. Trevor Hoffman used to get away with an 86 mph fastball because he also had one of the game’s great trick pitches. Lidge would have to continue to evolve a lot to survive that way, but I wouldn’t rule it out completely.
From what I’ve witnessed from Lidge 08-10 (Granted I’m no expert). Is that he just needs his FB to have some small movement and great location. His Slider is his money maker when he can throw that for strikes in the mid 80s range that is when he is going to do his damage. Also it’s interesting to ponder where he finds himself going forward. If this bullpen can get it’s self healthy it could be damn good.

Thats pretty accurate. Its more about his fastball having tail and being able to control it, and the slider being lights out with him.
I’d rather have Lidge throwing an 87MPH fastball with movement, and accuracy, drop a tick on the slider, but still make it dance like Martha Freaking Graham, that for him to be a few ticks faster, and not being pinpoint, and also not ahving the command with the slider.
Lidge gets in trouble when his slider is hanging, and he is forced to go the FB more often. It doesnt matter if its 89 or 99. It’ll get clocked.

Have there been any pitchers in recent history who have gone from relying almost exclusively on their ability to blow batters away to being a knuckleballer? I can’t think of any.

Oh man. I’m rooting for Galvis to make it to the majors, but if we end up with him starting at short in 2012 because Ruben botched the Rollins negotiations, that’s a firing offense.
I guess the important word here is length. If they think Galvis will be a viable replacement for Rollins in the next couple years they might be less apt to give Rollins a long term deal.

by Veni Vidi Vici on Jul 12, 2011 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions
If the Rollins negotiation fails, there is the option of another veteran on a short term deal (Alex Gonzalez maybe?) as a bridge to Galvis 2012.
But I would prefer a 3 year Rollins deal too.
by Vaughn Haze on Jul 12, 2011 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions
No thanks
Alex Gonzalez has a lifetime 5.5 oWAR in 11 seasons in the bigs, and 28 CAREER stolen Bases. his dWAR on his career is 0.9. most of theat 0WAR came in 2010, btw… And he’s making 5 million bucks a year. That top me, puts Rollins value in perspective.
Here’s the list of FREE AGENT SS’s next year, followed by age and options.
Clint Barmes (33)
Yuniesky Betancourt (30) – $6MM club option with a $2MM buyout
Orlando Cabrera (37)
Jamey Carroll (37)
Ronny Cedeno (29) – $3MM club option with a $200K buyout
Craig Counsell (41)
Rafael Furcal (34) – $12MM club option with a $1.3MM buyout
Alex Gonzalez (34)
Jerry Hairston Jr. (36)
J.J. Hardy (29)
Omar Infante (30)
Cesar Izturis (32)
Julio Lugo (36)
John McDonald (37)
Augie Ojeda (37)
Nick Punto (34)
Edgar Renteria (35)
Jose Reyes (29)
Jimmy Rollins (33)
Ramon Santiago (32)
Marco Scutaro (36) – $6MM club option/$3MM player option with a $1.5MM buyout
Miguel Tejada (38)
Jack Wilson (34)
Pretty slim pickings. Find someone on there who puts up between .05 and 1.5 dWAR annually, and also can STILL put up 2.0 oWAR and steal 30 -40 bags a year other than Rollins and Reyes.
If one of them isn’t playing SS for us next year, we’re in big big trouble, IMO.
No thanks.
25.8/106 CURRENTLY HOT!!!
Well, if you take out the “must steal 30-40 bags regardless of WAR” there are some options. Why the obsession with sheer number of stolen bases? Good baserunning is useful, but it’s a small factor compared to hitting and defense, and number of steals isn’t all there is to baserunning. It’s rare to find a player with both a high volume and success rate of stolen bases, and frankly the payoff isn’t that high. Most shortstops will have good enough speed to get from first to third on singles or score from second, and it’s not necessary for them to be elite base stealers. I’m more interested in finding a guy who can provide an adequate bat and above-average glove from the most important defensive infield position.
Yeah. That’s jimmy Rollins, bro. You kind of made my point with your response. No offense.

In regards to Rollins 3 year deal
I just realized Galvis will be out of options in 2014. So a 3 year Rollins extension results in Galvis riding pine instead of developing while burning a club control year (Or, Rollins becoming a very expensive backup).
It will be interesting to see how it turns out, because I wouldn’t think Jimmy would take less than 3 years.
Or, Rollins becoming a very expensive backup
I’m actually OK with Rollins getting 1 year of “thanks for your overall career contributions $$” After all, Polly and Raul may have gotten an extra year, and who knows how many extra years Ryan got. J-Roll got things going in 2007, and the team hasn’t looked back.
3 years at approximately current salary would be right for all parties IMO. More years or $$ is too much, less years or $$, J-roll might walk.
In preparation for NHL free agency, thinking of changing my screen name to Bhudde in 10OC.
J-Roll discussions
Shouldn’t start anywhere south of 10 million per. Anything lower is an insult IMO.
25.8/106 CURRENTLY HOT!!!
Or Rollins moving to 3B like a lot of 35 year old SS’s do
Or someone else leapfrogging Galvis by then, or a myriad of other things. Galvis Shouldn’t even enter into the equation when it comes to 3 years for Jimmy.
25.8/106 CURRENTLY HOT!!!
Yeah. One thing to remember here is that Galvis is pretty far from a sure thing. This is not a blue chip prospect. I’m not ruling out the possibility that he’ll turn into a major league starting shortstop, but this isn’t Starlin Castro or Elvis Andrus. Shorting Jimmy in contract negotiations on the basis that Galvis can be your safety net is foolhardy.
So a 3 year Rollins extension results in Galvis riding pine instead of developing while burning a club control year.
Or it results in you thanking God that you have a starting shortstop at all when Galvis proves he can’t cut it. Which is significantly more likely than not, frankly.
I know we've discussed this at length,
But the only way I can see J-roll not playing SS next year is if we’re dumb enough to go after Reyes and either:
1. We piss of J-Roll to the point of him demanding more money.
2. We wait too long and he signs somewhere else and we lose on Reyes.
3. Reyes is willing to give us J-Rolls hometown discount.
There’s also another scenario, in which we sign both Reyes and Rollins, and move one fo them to 3B, and either shift Polly to LF, or shift Polly to 2B and Utley to LF. It sounds crazy, but its not that far fetched.
25.8/106 CURRENTLY HOT!!!
OK, that’s probably payroll craziness, but I like it! (Not the Utley to LF part though.)
by David S. Cohen on Jul 12, 2011 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions
Not as crazy as you would think, if you have faith in the young guns in the pen.
You sign Rollins for 3-40, and Reyes for 5-90. thats 31 million. Assume Cole gets 18/per. thats 49 million, but subtract roughly 16 for what Cole and Jimmy get this year, and its 33 million.
Lidge Madson, Oswalt, and Ibanez make 48 million combined.
Howard gets another 5 next season, and Cliff I think 10. thats 15
You dump Kendrick and Baez and you have about 5 million to spend on other stuff.
Its pretty close to the same payroll next season, with a cheap bullpen/bench and a rotation of Halladay/Lee/Hamels/Blanton/Worley
I’d go for it in a heartbeat, but I’d shift Polly to LF, keep Utley at 2B, or try and trade Polly in the offseason.
25.8/106 CURRENTLY HOT!!!
Wouldn’t it make much more sense to sign a high-quality left fielder?
Polanco is a one-dimensional hitter who is a good hitter at a shallow-offense position like 2B, or even 3B, but would be among the worst in LF.
Moving Utley to LF is absurd because you’re putting an elite defensive second baseman who is still one of the 2-3 most valuable second basemen in baseball, to a position where he’s never played and would be closer to average as a hitter. Left fielders are usually heavy hitters.
Sure, you’d make up for some of that with a slick left side of the infield, but that’s not an ideal return for the amount of money you’d have to spend. Better to seek out a legitimate outfielder.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely not advocating moving Polanco OR Utley to the OF, in fact, I think it would be a bonehead move, especially with Utley. It only makes sense if you can trade Polanco.
And I think we all know that theres a better chance that jamie Moyer is in the rotation next season than we go and sign Reyes and Rollins.
That said, If you look at the OF on the market this off season, compared to 2013 (when Vic is a free agent as well) , and look at your 3B options past next year, and see where our short term organization depth offensively lies, offensively, its not that far out the realm of thinking.
Of course, we all know that Amaro will likely not sign Rollins OR Reyes, and go after Sabathia instead. :)
25.8/106 CURRENTLY HOT!!!
Reyes is not coming here.
I may not know what uni he will wear next month, let alone next year, but I can be 100% sure Phillies pin-stripes will not be involved- they are not going to spend the prospects on a rental with no real spot on the field to play (nor should they), and they are not going to overspend (and probably go over the luxury tax limit) to sign Reyes in the off season- they don’t have the money (or so they say) and their M.O. as highly priced free agents go has been arms not bats.

That LVL report card is pretty bad. Brown gets a C+ for hitting .252 and having a better OPS than Rollins and Ibanez.. Yet Ibanez gets a B- in spite of hitting .241, and being a bad Defensive player. Well, that seems pretty arbitrary.
Brown is still in his immature phase and needs to learn how to be a professional from his seasoned veteran teammates before he can earn that grade.

I’d love to see them stick with this split, but I have a feeling its only because they don’t know where they stand with Polanco, and figure the starters will be well rested after the break.
Ideally, assuming a healthy Lidge, Madson, Polly and Vic, I’d rather see
Francisco, Mayberry, Valdez, Schnieder, Gload and Martinez on the bench
and
Bastardo, Stutes, Madson, Lidge, and two of either Herndon/Baez/Perez than to send Mayberry back down to keep one of those three relievers.
Whoever that 7th releiver is gives Charlie no extra confidence, or helps anywhere except the occasional extra inning game.
Mayberry’s bat off the bench is way more valueable, IMO.

I have a feeling Lidge is gonna surprise in the 2nd half. If you think about it, he has no pressure, otehr than playing for a contract next year, no one expects anything from him at all, and I don’t care if he’s throwing 85 mph, if hsi slider is moving, I’ll take Brad Lidge in the 7th or 8th over anybody in our bullpen right now not named Bastardo for two reasons:
1. Charlie is more likely to go to Lidge in the 7th or 8th with a 3 or 4 run lead to get to Bastardo/Madson, and not overwork HLH
2. Lidge is gonna be hungry to prove himself, and he’s a gamer with experience that knows how to PITCH.

Pence hits righties better than lefties, and while he is obviously an upgrade over Ibanez, he’s going to command AT LEAST 10mm in Arbitration next year, and IMO there are muich better options in the OF at that kind of money, on the free agent or trade market in the off season that wont be drastic overpays. Cosart and Singleton (and Valle, IMO) should be untouchable for ANYONE who has been mentioned in Philly rumors.
25.8/106 CURRENTLY HOT!!!
I don’t know about Valle being untouchable, does he really profile as a plus player at catcher at this point? Maybe he does, and my perception of him is off. Or are you saying so simply because there’s no one else on the horizon to replace Ruiz in a few years?
Well in my view, the entire minor league system should be untouchable unless there’s an absolute steal on the table. The Phillies have a 97.4% chance of making the playoffs. How much is an extra player – any extra player – going to raise those odds? How much is an extra player going to raise the odds in the crapshoot that is the playoffs?

“Pulsars are highly magnetized, rotating neutron stars that emit a beam of electromagnetic radiation. The radiation can only be observed when the beam of emission is pointing towards the Earth. This is called the lighthouse effect and gives rise to the pulsed nature that gives pulsars their name. Because neutron stars are very dense objects, the rotation period and thus the interval between observed pulses is very regular. For some pulsars, the regularity of pulsation is as precise as an atomic clock.1 The observed periods of their pulses range from 1.4 milliseconds to 8.5 seconds.2 A few pulsars are known to have planets orbiting them, such as PSR B1257+12. Werner Becker of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics said in 2006, ”The theory of how pulsars emit their radiation is still in its infancy, even after nearly forty years of work.“[3]”

Cuddyer, for example, has 13HR and 42 RBI on the season. (hes hitting 300/370/474, too, to be fair) But he’s probably the best RH bat available.
Cuddyers LH splits is what makes him really dreamy. 8 of those HR’s and 15 RBI (in just 100 PA) to the tune of a 369/ .470/ .726 line with 16BB and 12K’s…

Giles singles out Jeter for skipping ASG
I don’t really see anything wrong with what Giles said. He may be using Jeter to make his point but he certainly isn’t saying that because Jeter is skipping the game that suddenly the integrity of the game is in question.
Maybe we can just get rid of the game all together?
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
While I don’t necessarily disagree with the sentiments he expressed, as a matter of principle Giles should never say anything in public about anything.
Phillies record under Ruly Carpenter (minus first three years after purchase, plus first three years after sale) (1976-1983): 705 W, 536 L (.549)
Phillies record under Bill Giles (-3/+3) (1984-2000): 1251 W, 1436 L (.466)
Phillies record under David Montgomery (-3/+3) (2001-2011): 939 W, 771 L (.568)
Obviously there’s more to the story, but that is no coincidence.
Is there a handy reference for records of teams by years where you could enter, say:
Phillies, 1946 – 2011 and get a cumulative W/L?
I can’t find a decent interface for it.

woops i flipped two of the wp's
Carpenter: 705-536 (.568)
Giles: 1251-1436 (.466)
Monty: 939-771 (.549)
I think what Giles meant
is that Jeter is a douche..

So if the NFL lockout persists then nobody will be sitting there for a while. Maybe the city of Miami should consider converting it into a low cost senior living complex or something.

Take juan Rivera off the list
Apparently Toronto dealt him to THE DODGERS for cash and a ptbnl. The dodgers then DFA’d Thames. No idea what to make of them getting Rivera. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense at all.

He could probably wear Thames’ jersey and you wouldn’t know the difference (because neither can field, run or hit righties).

Thames actually was worse against Lefites this year, than righties, though. (Which is why L:A signed him, cause he had such great split success with NY last year…) Its like mind numbingly bad.
At least Rivera, as craptastic as he was in every other aspect of the game, (like 15 on a scale of 1-10) put up a .327/400/.509 line against southpaws.
Still not sure how the Dogers are gonna increase payroll with Rivera, though, AND send cash to the Blue Jays for Juan Rivera. It makes no sense at all. They’r in financial dissaray and are 11 games back and 10 games under .500
Unless they’re planning on putting Kemp or Eitehr on the market, theres no real justification for this, IMO.

No.
See if you can guess the player to line, 2011 RHB against LHP
A. .167/ .231/ .306 1 HR every 36 AB, 1 RBI every 12 AB
B. .208/.315/.325 1 HR every 37 AB, 1RBi every 6 AB
C. .154/.154/.154 0 HR or RBI from the right side all year.
D. .224/ .318 /.276 ) 0HR, 1RBI every 28 AB’s
Hint: one of them is Marcus Thames and none of the other three are named John Mayberry.
(who has no real L/R split this season AT ALL, and a .245/ .315/ .449 with 2HR and 6 RBI in 49 PA against LHP, which, coincidentally, is the best line of any Philly non regular (including francisco) on the year.

no idea
I was joking about Thames btw.
It’s interesting how his splits have reversed. I’ve never understood right-handed hitters that can’t hit right-handed pitching. how do you make it to the majors if you have no chance against 70% of the opposition? And after years of playing baseball, hasn’t one seen thousands upon thousands of pitches from right-handers to make an adjustment or get used to it? Are splits just prone to fluctuation due to small samples that guys get like Thames get pigeonholed and never get time at the MLB level to acclimate to same-handed hurlers? Lefty/lefty splits seem to make more sense but guys like Thames (for most of his career) kinda stump me
by FanSince1993 on Jul 12, 2011 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions
I got the joke
Typically a guy like Thames makes it to the bigs because he can mash lefties. More RHB than you think can’t handle LHP at all, and most LHB have trouble so a guy like Thames, who is decent in the field provides value in that regard. But his numbers this year are baffling, to say the least.
A is Thames
B is Francisco
C is Martinez
D is Valdez, btw.
Both ibanez and brown handle lefties better than all of them.
25.8/106 CURRENTLY HOT!!!
self joke kill
It just stands to reason for me that if a RHB can become adept at hitting lefties that they are less accustomed to facing then he should be talented enough to hit against the righties that he faces more often.
by FanSince1993 on Jul 12, 2011 3:38 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Agreed.
In the case of Thames, (or most “split guys”) what always set him apart wasn’t necessariy his line splits, but his eye, and his bb/9 k/9 differentials against RHP.
Thames, for example, in over 2000 major league PA, (1144 vs. RHP, 872 vs. LHP) has 81 BB against RHP to 78 vs. LHP, but has struck out 120 less times against LHP in 250 LESS plate appearances.

How does a team with no money trade for a guy using cash?
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.

I misread the deal. Toronto sent Rivera and CASH to LA for a PTBNL OR CASH.
So it sounds like Toronto is paying his salary, and LA is gonna send em somebody, or agreed to X amount of dollars if they can’t agree to a name…

Which, fyi, likely means RAJ passed on Rivera.
In preparation for NHL free agency, thinking of changing my screen name to Bhudde in 10OC.
No, it doesn’t- Rivera was traded after being placed on waivers. As part of the waivers system teams can put in for a player- preference is given first to the league the player is currently in, from worst to first, then the other league from worst to first. Once a team makes a claim, they have a certain time period to either work out a trade, or for the waiving team to just let the player and his salary go to the claiming team. (I think there is another part of this sometimes where the waiving team can change their mind and keep the player, but that only happens in certain circumstances.) The Jays would not have had a choice in who to make a deal with- once a player is placed on waivers, priority is decided completely by league and record. The Dodgers, with a record of 41-51 were the fourth team in the NL in the priority order, while the Phillies would have been absolutely last, so there is no way of knowing if the Phillies made a claim.

He was dfa'd
He hadn’t been put on waivers yet. The trade happened inside the 10 day period. Toronto could have dealt him to anyone. The dodgers would not have claimed him on waivers, cause they would have been responsible for all of the minimum left.
You would be right if the 10 days were up, and Toronto put him on waivers.

Lehigh Valley article gives Utley a B-?!
Obviously this guys opinion means nothing, but sighting Utley’s defense and lack of RBI’s as dectractors is just silly. He’s tied for third on the team in fWAR at 1.9 despite about half the PA’s of other starters and his UZR/150 would lead the league (for second baseman) if he qualified. The RBI’s are just a product of circumstance and Polanco’s decline coinciding with Chase’s improvement (and Mayberry has held his own with a 114 wRC+ good for 4th on the team).
Considering Chase returned a solid month before many people even hoped, has played virtually everyday, sports a .366 wOBA, is elite defensively, has stabilized one of the most important spots in the lineup and is even 8 for 8 stealing (plus I hear he tips well) …. I give Chase an A. But what do I know?
The belief that Utley is a bad fielder is pretty commonplace. I remember that on Baseball Tonight, John Kruk identified Utley’s fielding as one of the Phillies’ main disadvantages prior to one of the two LCS against the Dodgers, I forget which. What can you say, people are stupid.
Well he can only go to his left
by FanSince1993 on Jul 12, 2011 2:22 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
that was likely in response to his throwing issues last few years. Also a costly mistake in Game 6 of the NLCS last year that led the Giants to tie the game.
The old confirmation bias
I’ve heard things in the past too of course, but it surprises me how people can continually argue their perceptions over facts.
Also, is the city-wide Utley man-crush starting to wear off? It seems that even loyal, knowledgeable fans aren’t appreciating the contributions he’s making this year. I was toying with the idea of writing a fanpost over the weekend but the good folks at Crashburn kinda beat me to it.
by FanSince1993 on Jul 12, 2011 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Well Crashburn Alley beating you to the punch is no big suprise.
They went off the deep end defending Utley’s “honor” after the NLCS and the Utley to LF nonsense.

I’m sorry. A bad fielder doesn’t run up, field a grounder, fake a throw to first, and fire a dart to home to save a run. In the immortal words of Jim Calhoun, “Get some facts and come back and see me.”
(Note: not a response to you, taco pal, or anyone in particular. Just a rant to the world.)

Hasn’t he also had some defensive issues thus year, both with throwing errors as well as the collision with Rollins and a couple of balls he should have let Domonic handle? I am not saying that I agree with a B- (I would have given him an A-), but he has had some moments defensively this year of trying too hard.
As for the lack of RBIs, I hate that measure of skill almost as much as I hate runs scored and pitcher wins. At the end of the day, these are all things that require team effort. From a hitting standpoint, the only thing missing are the homeruns, and even that is only a little off of the rate posted last year (and he already has more triples than last year- coolest play in baseball!)

Agreed that it would be nice to see some power return (current ISO is well down) although its nice to see him leg out those triples. But we have plenty of time for that.
