I did a shot of pickle juice one time. Wasn’t my idea, but it wasn’t the worst thing ever.

I’ve drank it a couple of times too- if you get the right brand of pickles, it’s actually quite good.

Imagine 8 hrs. under the shield, head to toe in leathers in that heat. Never sweat so much in my life. Don’t miss it. The arc produces a temperature of about 6500°F at the tip to give you an idea of how much heat will radiate off the steel. Now, imagine pulling double shifts and during a time when there wasn’t even air conditioning to come home to. Not to mention the war. Total bad asses.
Wow. I tip my cap to you.

Tip your cap to the women welders of WWII. They were instrumental in building fleet. What’s truly amazing is that they learned a difficult trade in half the time it normally takes and became skilled fabricators. Welding takes alot of hand coordination and concentration but that just comes with repetition. The harder part is learning the principles of fabrication and building as well as welding in the field: in the practice booth situations are ideal, in the field your often welding out of position. And keep this in mind; these are boats so your dealing with curves and complex geometry – to call it difficult is an understatement, esp. when the hull is made out of inch thick plate steel. Even among the woodworking trades, boat and stair builders are considered the “proverbial shit”. I only did basic structural stuff, nothing like what they did. On a job site, I’d be fetching their rods and doing all the grinding – basically I’d be their dog.
A big tip of the vap to them as well!

I was at the game last night, and I’ll definitely confirm the heat. I have all the sympathy in the world for Doc, as I could barely walk my dog around the block without feeling faint, let alone pitch a professional baseball game.
One note of interest (that is, if you don’t count me seeing Sarge and T-Mac, vaguely, in the press box…which is kind of exciting in its way): I sat next to a guy who told my wife and I that he taught Nate McLouth in high school. The guy seemed trustworthy enough, and who would pick McLouth to lie about, so I figure he was on the level. Nice guy, bought us beers, and told us many times about how McLouth was 5’8 and like 110, soaking wet. It’s the closest I’ve come to being sympathetic with / relating to a Brave.
It was hot last night, but I have a feeling tomorrow’s day game is going to be totally brutal. I’ll be back again tonight.
Ouch, best of luck there. As much as I loved the game — despite the outcome — and would kill to go back, I don’t know if I would want to even chance it at one in the afternoon.
Tonight:
7pm Partly Sunny 85°, 58% humidity
8pm T-storms 83°, 61% humidity
9pm Partly Cloudy 82°, 64% humidity
10pm Partly Cloudy 81°, 67% humidity
Tomorrow
1pm Partly Sunny 93°, 59% humidity
2pm Partly Sunny 96°, 58% humidity
3pm Partly Sunny 97°, 57% humidity
4pm Partly Sunny 96°, 58% humidity
Gotta love the Midwest.
