Greg Dobbs vs. Jayson Werth
Going into today Greg Dobbs was batting .302 w/a .346 OBP, 26 RBI and a .735 OPS. Werth was hitting .212 with 31 ribbies, a .321 OBP and a .673 OPS. When you look at the RBI comparison, consider the fact that Werth had batted 344 times and Dobbs had 222 AB. I had a sneaking suspicion Werth would suck this year, but who would have thought that Greg Dobbs would actually be better?

I actually cringed
When I read that breakdown. Poor Jayson. On the brightside, he gets to make 9 figures to play baseball.

True, but then again, RBI don’t tell you much about a player, and in this case even the rate stats are a bit deceptive.
Jayson Werth is an every day player, Dobbs is platooning (with Wes Helms!) and thus his rate stats reflect primarily PA’s where he has a platoon advantage. If Dobbs had to (try to) hit lefties, his stats would sink like a rock. Not sure if they’d be worse than Werth’s right now, but it’s likely they’d be worse than they are now. Remember, there’s a reason Dobbs has not been used against lefties throughout his career.
Of course, I’m nitpicking a bit here. Fact is, it shouldn’t even be close; Dobbs is a better player than he was last year, but Werth should be far better than this even if he’s regressed. And Werth’s contract is astronomically larger than Dobbs’s.
The difference appears to be all BA, which makes me think Werth is getting killed by BABIP this year. Hitters affect their own BABIP, and BA is partly affected by strikeouts, which Werth has always been fond of, but Werth should be hitting better than .212 at least. (Dobbs probably shouldn’t be hitting .302 on the other hand, but .270-.280 wouldn’t be surprising.) I should go look up Werth’s peripherals.
In this case...
…it seemed like looking into advanced metrics was unnecessary considering the massive difference in salary and expectations.
hello, hello Saam

Hello
I don’t know this poster, but the name should be familiar to old-timers like myself. He (Byrum “By” Saam) was the voice of the Phillies radio and TV broadcasts for many years.
