Playoff Roster Projections...

Because it's never too early to start talking playoffs (and I think it's safe to assume at this point that the Phils will be playing October baseball), here's what I personally would like to see on my 25-man playoff roster.  Critique and comment as you see fit:

SP's:  Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Oswalt

RP's:  KK, Worley, Lidge, Stutes, Bastardo, Madson, and another LHP yet to be acquired

Infield:  Howard, Utley, Rollins, Polanco, Gload, Valdez, Martinez

Outfield:  Ibanez, Victorino, Pence, Brown, Mayberry

Catchers:  Ruiz, Schneider

Pretty straightforward, but I have 3 big qualms:

First, I'd put Brown on the roster instead of Francisco, because I honestly think Brown just gives you more offensively and defensively at this point, and it'd be nice to get him some postseason experience because he's the future in LF, and Francisco is probably done after this year.

Also, given the fact that Worley has greatly exceeded all expectations thus far, I feel as though he's definitely earned a spot on the playoff roster, but I don't necessarily want to drop KK for him.  I think both of those guys are more trustworthy options than anyone we currently have on the active or 40-man roster.

Finally, it'd be nice to have more than one LHP going into the postseason, somebody who could be used as a true LOOGY.  We don't have a second LHP on the active roster, and Juan Perez probably isn't the answer.  It'd be nice to see the Phils grab a guy off waivers to fill this role, and I'd love to entertain possibilities in the comments section.  I've read on Philly.com about the potential of adding Arthur Rhodes, but I'm sure the fine members of TGP can come up with something better than that...

Soooooooooooo

1- You point out the extremely obvious.
2- You say your 1st qualm is that Brown needs to be on the roster, yet you have him on the roster and
3- You mention how you want another Lefty, yet you completely disregard any intelligent comment on who it should be or why other than throwing out Arthur Rhodes as a possibility since he just became a FA.

Thanks. No, seriously, thanks!

You just wasted 2.3 minutes of my life (not including this comment) and I would like them back, somehow and someway.

Geez. Being a jerk is unnecessary. I think the poster meant for this to be a conversation starter. No need to trash it.

You point out the extremely obvious.

Yes. Yes I did. The playoff roster won’t be very surprising for the most part, except for the three points I wrote about in more detail. That’s why this isn’t a lengthy post. It’s mostly a means to open an discussion of the fact that Brown should be in over Francisco, and/or the bullpen situation that gives us the best chance to win.

You say your 1st qualm is that Brown needs to be on the roster, yet you have him on the roster

Why would I say that Brown needs to be on the roster, then not have him on my roster? I’m calling out your call out!

Arthur Rhodes hasn’t been having a phenomenal year by any stretch. Could he do for us this year what Contreras did in 2009? Maybe, maybe not. I don’t know who else is really available at this point, and I was hoping to get some commenters that offered reasonable suggestions, instead of sarcasm…What have you offered me in terms of either acquiring Rhodes, or anybody else?

I didn’t hold a gun to your head and make you read the post. You wasted 2.3 minutes of your own life, so no, you’re not getting anything from me.

My Guess

SP: Too obvious to bother
Bullpen: Worley, Blanton, Lidge, Bastardo, Madson, Contreras, Stutes (If they want a LOOGY, I’d guess it’s Perez or Chunk)
OF: Brown, Ibanez, Mayberry, Pence, Victorino
IF: Howard, Utley, Rollins, Polly, Exxon, Gload, Mini-Mart
C: Ruiz, Schneider

This assumes a healthy Polly,Truck and Cupcakes. If Blanton and Contreras aren’t ready by the playoffs, I’d add in KK and Chunk (personally, I’d ad Herndon, but I don’t think Cholly would). If Polly isn’t healthy, then I think Orr would fill out the infield. I also wouldn’t totally rule out Kratz being added to the 40 man as a safety valve, but the only way he makes the PS Roster is if Schneider or Chooch get hurt.

As good as Worley has been...

I think I want KK in the bullpen. He’s been there and has playoff experience, for what that’s worth.

I’m pretty sure KK’s never actually been on an active Playoff roster. He was with the team, but I’m 90% sure he was inactive and just held down the bench and kept the Gatorade full.

I forgot about 2007. So there is the valuable playoff experience. KK, got destroyed by the Rockies.

I was at that game. Man did it suck.

What about both?

If all else remains equal why not keep KK and Worley? Would you add Herndon in favor of Worley? I don’t know that I would…I’d even have to think long and hard about whether or not I’d take Worley over Contreras, if Jose recovers in time and has shown promising appearances by late September. If the same is the case with Blanton, where he returns and looks fit before the playoffs, I think at that point I’d probably have to leave Worley or KK off the post season roster, and deciding which one goes is a tough call.

As things stand right now, though, I’m not yet counting on either Blanton or Contreras to be in a position where the Phillies can rely on them in the post season, and I don’t feel terrible about having KK or Worley on the roster for middle relief, if god forbid one of our starters can’t go 6+ IP.

by teezy33 on Aug 16, 2011 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I might take Worley over Herndon just because Worley would serve a different function (ability to pitch 3 or more innings).

I would take Herndon over Stutes and perhaps Lidge, but obviously that isn’t going to happen in real life.

by taco pal on Aug 16, 2011 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I would take Herndon over KK, personally. Herndon would have a limited scope, but if you needed a DP to get out of an inning, a guy with good worm-burner tendencies would be nice to have.
